A mail dropbox is a type of container in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The term mail dropbox, also colloquially known as a post box, refers to the blue, metal boxes, standing on four raised legs in many present-day and abandoned settlements all over the Wasteland. They belonged to the pre-War Post Office Department and were typically used to collect outgoing mail from the inhabitants of said settlements. Although rusted nowadays, the emblem of the Post Office Department is still recognizable.

After the Great War and the nuclear fire, and since the former federal agency for postal affairs doesn't exist anymore, they seem to be used as garbage cans by some Wastelanders, and one can sometimes find some minor loot in them, in rare cases even weapons.

Variants[edit | edit source]

Mailbox – This is by its appearance a variant of the mail dropbox though it's named "Mailbox". Also it differs from the standard model by fixed content rather than random loot. It has not to be confused with the mailbox.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Mail dropboxes are containers, that don't respawn. However, usage of them as "safe storage" isn't recommended because most of them are placed in public areas and every passerby could look into them for some valuable items.
  • The Scrounger perk affects the possible amount of darts that can be found in mail dropboxes in Fallout 3.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • Some of the loot lists contain items, that will never spawn. They are calculated into the chance, however.
  • There's one mail dropbox in Primm, that can't be accessed because it's placed underneath the surface.
