I'm Manny. I'm on security detail here. You see a rifle barrel sticking out of the dinosaur's mouth, you got a fifty-fifty shot it's me. Otherwise it's Boone.

Manny Vargas is a Californian citizen and former Khan who is a veteran NCR Army sniper living in Novac in Fallout: New Vegas. Vargas is one of the two former NCR 1st Recon snipers who are now sentries in Novac. He and Craig Boone alternate shifts in Dinky the T-Rex's mouth.

Background[edit | edit source]

Born and raised in North Vegas, Manny once ran with the Great Khans together with his cousins. Although he loved the lifestyle and the thrill of being a raider, an unspecified incident made it impossible for him to continue life as one of the Khans. He left the gang and decided to enlist with the New California Republic Army. As an excellent shot, he was assigned to 1st Recon as Craig Boone's spotter. The military life appealed to him, especially the discipline and travelling to new places in order to make people safe, not to mention Craig, who quickly became his closest friend.[1]

The good run lasted until the Bitter Springs Massacre. Both Manny and Craig were stationed at Camp Golf at the time. Knowing he'd have to face his former comrades, Manny faked an illness and stayed back in camp. He's not clear on what happened, just that a lot of people died and many of them didn't want to be a part of the fighting at all. Although he harbors no ill will towards the Army, blaming only the chaos of the battlefield for the massacre, it made it impossible for him to continue serving. The fact that people would sometimes call him a murderer to his face when they secured a Mojave town didn't help.[2][3]

Manny and Craig took their papers and left to find a new life in the wasteland. Manny convinced his friend to settle at Novac, where their rifles could do some good. Problem is, Craig met Carla in the meantime and they didn't see eye to eye, not one bit.[1] The two constantly bickered, in no small part due to their wildly different backgrounds and the bad blood between the impoverished North Vegas and wealthy New Vegas. The hostility between the two soured relations between Craig and Manny.[4][1]

It happened when Carla was abducted by the Legion. Craig came to his friend to confide in him, but Manny failed to hide his satisfaction at her disappearance. The grieving husband couldn't take this kind of reaction from his best friend and turned his back. Although Manny hoped Craig would come around, Boone didn't. Instead, he disappeared from Novac, returning grim, cold, and a shell of a man.[5][6]

Manny was left without a friend in Novac. He was widely respected for his role as a sniper and leadership in security matters, but although people look up to him and depend on him, nobody really cares about his feelings.[7] Perhaps for that reason, when McMurphy came to Novac with Benny and asked for a safe place to sleep, Manny accommodated them, showing his loyalty to the Khans and letting friends from a past life into his world once more, even if just for a brief evening.[8]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Manny was Craig Boone's closest friend ever since their time in 1st Recon, although their friendship was tested by Carla and her personality. When he later lost his friend's trust, Manny also lost his closest confidante and the only person who seemed to understand what he felt.[7]

Although he's no longer a member of the Great Khans, he is still loyal to them and helps them when they're in need, proving the doubters wrong.[8]

Notable quotes[edit | edit source]

  • "[Who are you?] I'm Manny. I'm on security detail here. You see a rifle barrel sticking out of the dinosaur's mouth, you got a fifty-fifty shot it's me. Otherwise it's Boone."
  • "[What did you and Boone's wife argue about?] Man, you name it. See, I grew up in North Vegas. Me and my cousins. We were some bad seeds. Got in with a gang. I loved it. Then something happened, and I couldn't handle it anymore. So, I enlisted. Earned my future. Brought down my best friend to share that future with me. And here was this woman who was too good for it, trying to take him away. So yeah. I didn't see eye-to-eye with the bitch."
  • "[So why'd you leave?] Ah, well... I just felt like it was time, you know? Wanted to have a home. Plus I was up at Camp Golf when Bitter Springs went down. I faked like I was sick to get out of going, because I knew some of the people there. But when everybody came back nobody would tell me what happened. And people would call us murderers sometimes when we showed up to secure towns."
  • "[What did happen at Bitter Springs?] I still don't know exactly. Just that a lot of people died who didn't want to be part of the fighting at all. I don't blame anybody for it. There's so much chaos when you're fighting, you're lucky not to shoot your own guys. But it did take something out of it for me. Just wasn't the same. So when it came time to re-enlist, I just took my papers and walked."
  • "[Who's Boone?] Boone's a sniper, same as me. Used to spot for him when we were enlisted with the NCR. After we got out, I talked him into settling down here. So, here we are. I'd introduce you, but uh... we're not so friendly right now."
  • "[Did you have anything to do with Boone's wife's disappearance?] Believe me. When I heard the news, my first thought was, I owe somebody. Big. I figured Boone would come around after a while. But he hasn't. And I'm starting to think that if he doesn't find her that things will never go back to the way they were."
  • "[What do you need?] Novac, it's home for me now. I want that to be for good. I like it here, and I've left too many homes behind. But the only resource we got here is junk. Without that, people wouldn't have anything to trade. They'd all have to leave. We get most of it up the road from the old rocket test site. But a bunch of ghouls showed up one day and took it over. We can't get in there now."
  • "[Where is Boulder City?] It's straight up Route 93 from here. Just keep following the road north."
  • "[Why don't you deal with it?] I would. But I've gotta watch the road. Caesar's Legion has been taking territory just east of here. They took Nelson. If we let our guard down, they might attack. All it takes for the Legion is for them to sense weakness."
  • "[He has something of mine.] You talking about that chip? Man, I don't think he's giving it up."
  • "[I have a score to settle.] Doesn't surprise me. Guy seemed like he'd do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Probably makes a lot of enemies."
  • "[Why are you on bad terms with Boone?] Me and his wife, we didn't see eye-to-eye on some things. We had some pretty big arguments. One day she turns up missing, and he hasn't said a word to me since."
  • "[What do you protect your town from?] You name it. Anything that comes within a thousand yards that looks like trouble. Lately we been getting ghouls, coming from the road to REPCONN, out to the west. Quite a few, last couple days. The big threat is the Legion coming from the East. If they decide to attack with a full force they'll run us over. But so far we been lucky."
  • "[What was your tour with the NCR like?] Oh, it was great. I wouldn't trade it. Something about that lifestyle, the discipline. Seeing new places, making people safe. What's not to like?"
  • "[What was I supposed to do again?] Just head over to the REPCONN test site west of here. See if you can get the ghouls out of there."
  • "[What needs to be done?] Well they gotta go, or this'll be a ghost town before long. Doesn't matter to me what you do. As long as the ghouls are out of there, that's good enough for me."
  • "[Any idea why they went that way?] No clue. I know Benny hadn't paid up yet. Maybe that was where they were supposed to get square."
  • "[<Lie> He's a good friend of mine. I'm trying to help him out.] Oh yeah? A good friend? If you say so, man."
  • "[Whatever he's doing, I want in on it.] A piece of the action, huh? I don't think he's the sharing type, but okay."
  • "[None of your business.] Hey, doesn't matter to me. I was just curious."
  • "[So you were in a gang? Were they tough?] Were they tough? I was in the Khans, man. It doesn't get any badder."
