The mayor – concerned with the current geopolitical situation[1] – took taxpayer money to build a gigantic personal luxury shelter for himself, his family, and their support staff. Somehow he received advanced warning of the incoming nuclear apocalypse,[2] and retreated to the shelter sealing it behind them. Their safety from the outside dangers would not last long, as the people discovered the shelter and were justifiably furious. They would rip open the door and overwhelm the security. The mayor believing that only giving them him would satiate their anger and leave his family in peace, got drunk and killed himself by electrocution in the bathtub. Leaving his suicide holotape on the toilet seat.

Instead of his last planned gesture, a guard found him and didn't notice the suicide note. Not willing to let her discover her husband in such a state, he told her that "he'll be back soon and not to worry." And in the meantime to take the children down to the utility room in the gym and wait for the situation to dissipate. This however was not to happen, for they were eventually outnumbered[3] and overwhelmed. The shelter fell into chaos, as the mob dying of radiation poisoning, tore through the staff and people in a furious rampage.[4]

In her final moments she recorded a holotape to her husband, unaware of his passing. Telling him that it was all her fault, blaming herself for convincing him that they needed all the funds for the shelter they took to. Deciding to give the shelter to the mod so long as they could walk away, completely disregarding the surface environment.[1] She would be killed by the angry mob as they tore through the shelter in their final hours.[4]

The facility itself would be abandoned as it stood as the last of the survivors died of radiation poisoning. Later being sealed up tight[2] by the Institute.[5]

When the bombs fell, the mayor of Boston and his wife were bundled into this hidden subterranean shelter. Though the bunker is sealed up tight, the wall terminal in the guard pod next door opens it without any problems. There’s an explosives box here, too. Head inside and either enter the large pipe or take the corridors and find out what happened to Boston’s mayor."
