Mercy is a unique weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

A fully-automatic grenade machinegun that was modified for heavy combat prior to the Great War, following the nuclear apocalypse, Mercy eventually ended up in the hands of a paladin of the Mojave Brotherhood of Steel, who carried it on a mission into Dead Wind Cavern only to be killed by the deathclaws residing there.

Characteristics[]

Compared to the standard grenade machinegun, Mercy does higher damage at the cost of using 40mm grenades which are less common and more expensive than the 25mm grenade used by the standard variant. The larger size of the 40mm grenades also restricts its ammunition capacity to 18 grenades, 12 less than the standard's 30, as well as also being heavier than 25mm, further limiting the amount of ammo one can carry if intending to use it in Hardcore mode without being over-encumbered. Like most unique weapons, Mercy cannot be equipped with weapon mods.

In terms of appearance, the weapon features the words "Hei Gui Bye Bye" spray-painted on the side of its chassis, possibly in reference to the Hei Gui armor used by Chinese stealth operatives. It also shows signs of extreme rust and heavy wear and tear from a long period of use without maintenance.

Durability[]

Mercy can fire a total of about 2,495 standard rounds, the equivalent of 139 reloads, from full condition before breaking. When jammed, the display screen glitches, the Courier hits the screen with their hand to fix it.

Location[]

Dead Wind Cavern - By a dead Brotherhood of Steel paladin along with some 40mm grenades, 40mm incendiary grenades and T-45d power armor and helmet. It is guarded by various types of deathclaws and the legendary deathclaw.

Notes[]

This gun is related to Vengeance from Fallout 3 in that both guns are heavy weapons found in deathclaw caves, and their names are antonyms of each other.

Behind the scenes[]

The writing on the "display" is easily recognizable as part of a UNIX-shell script, a group of scripting languages which are used for UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems, such as Plan9, Linux, *BSD systems, Darwin, and MacOS. The script that the display shows seems to be a repeated conditional that prints an error, prints the correct usage, then exits with an error.
