What the fuck do you want? This is the Slavers Guild not some safe house for you fucking jet heads.

— Metzger

Metzger is the mean looking slave master of the Den[2] and head of the Slavers Guild[1] in 2241.

Background[edit | edit source]

When it comes to slavers, few are as nasty as Metzger. The head of the Guild is a brute, ruling through intimidation and fear. However, as crude and unrefined as his methods are, Metzger was responsible for turning the Den into one of the major spots on the slave trading map. His men raid nomads and tribals in the northern regions, capturing them, then selling to whomever wants to buy. This dark business is highly profitable and is one of the two primary drivers of economy in the Den, the other being Rebecca Dyer's trade endeavors. The two are at odds, with Dyer wanting to get rid of Metzger, but lacking the ability to do so.

However, what would be a man without ambition? Metzger wants to expand his power and influence. To this end, he became a partner of the Mordinos, responsible for protecting chemicals from Vault City, intended for Reno's drug labs.[3] The lesser gangs of the Den acts as guards, though Metzger doesn't particularly care who does the job, as long as it's done.

If one assumed that Metzger had a low tolerance for failure, they'd be correct. Nowhere is that more apparent than with Vic. The Klamath trader sold Metzger a broken 2043B radio to allow the slave master to listen to communications between the Enclave and New Reno. When he realized the trader swindled him, Vic was swiftly enslaved and put to work on repairing the radio. Given Metzger's reputation, the elderly trader should be happy he didn't have his fingers cropped.

Quests[edit | edit source]

Effects of player's actions[edit | edit source]

  • If Metzger is killed, all slaver caravans in the region will be hostile.
  • Killing Metzger will allow Rebecca Dyer to take over the economy of the Den.
  • Keeping him alive will allow him to expand his slaving operations.

Other interactions[edit | edit source]

  • The player can become a slaver by talking to Metzger. A permanent tattoo will be placed on the forehead, changing the reaction of many characters throughout the game and locking out some content. In return, the player will be able to go on slave runs. Each captured slave is worth $100, though the runs will end if the player enslaves 30 slaves or more. The counter is reduced by one for each slave killed in an encounter and by 7 for every dead slaver.
  • Fighting Metzger is challenging to low level players, as there are plenty of slavers equipped with firearms. Locking the door, engaging at a distance, or stealing ammunition from slavers and Metzger in advance can help make the process easier. Metzger's death is worth 1500 experience, his men 1000, while freeing the slaves by opening the door and talking to them will grant 1500 experience. Rebecca Dyer will give the player $1000 as a reward. Naturally, the player will also receive +100 karma.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • Metzger was originally called Caesar, judging by the game files. The name was later used in Van Buren and Fallout: New Vegas for Caesar.
  • 'Metzger' is German for 'butcher'.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Metzger appears only in Fallout 2.
