Mirelurks are mutated crustaceans that inhabit the Northeastern Seaboard, particularly the Columbia and New England Commonwealths. Lakelurks are similar creatures that inhabit the Colorado watershed in the Mojave Wasteland.

Background[edit | edit source]

Unlike nearly all mutated creatures in the wasteland, (certain) mirelurks originally mutated shortly before the Great War from the radioactive pollutants in the North Atlantic, and populations were isolated around the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Nahant Oceanological Society originally made these observations, and despite their repeated attempts at garnering justified media and law enforcement attention to the issue, no one took the complaints seriously. The Boston Port Authority ignored their phone calls,[1] and Galaxy News Network spun the issue into a story about "how great shellfish season is going to be."[2] Although the Nehant Oceanological Society postulated that the increased size and toxicity of the mutant crustaceans would cause them to consume all their food sources and cause colony collapses,[2] but this was a shortsighted view, and the populations only grew after the Great War.

Biology[edit | edit source]

Scylla serrata horrendus[edit | edit source]

Mirelurks are descended from Chesapeake Bay horseshoe and blue crabs. The full scientific classification of the mirelurks is kingdom: Animalia, phylum: Arthropodia, subphylum: Crustacean/Chelicerata, class: Merostomata/Malacostraca, while order, family, and genus are left undetermined due to their mutation.[3] The subphylum and class are disputed as horseshoe crabs and blue crabs both evolved into mirelurks, due to their DNA/RNA samples having markers from two different subphyla and classes. Regardless, the missing order, family, and genus are later filled in by scientists: Scylla serrata horrendus.[3][4] The crustacean mirelurks appear to have a symbiotic relationship with a species of mutated snapping turtles[5] called the "mirelurk kings". These "kings" are similar to the lakelurks of Mojave Wasteland, which do not share a symbiotic relationship with any crab species.

Variants[edit | edit source]

Scylla serrata horrendus[edit | edit source]

Mirelurk[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
Mirelurk.png

The basic mirelurk is a biped with a light blue shell which uses claws and headbutts to attack.

Mirelurk hunter[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
Mirelurk hunter.png

Mirelurk hunters are easily distinguished from basic mirelurks due to their reddish-brown coloration and convex heads. While they are as aggressive as basic mirelurks, they are tougher, stronger and faster.

Mirelurk king[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
Mirelurk king.png

Mirelurk kings are significantly different from the crustacean mirelurks having mutated from snapping turtles into humanoid reptiles that live in a symbiotic relation with other mirelurk species. They lack the standard carapace, but possess a sonic-based ranged attack.

Nukalurk[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
NukaLurk.png

These mirelurks are unique to a Nuka-Cola plant in the Capital Wasteland. By living in spilled Nuka-Cola Quantum, their exoskeletons have adopted a neon blue coloration.

Swamplurk[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
Swamplurk.png

Swamplurks are a region variation of mirelurk hunters that inhabit Point Lookout. Their humid coastal environment gives them a mossy green coating of algae on their shells.

Swamplurk queen[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:
Swamplurk queen.png

Swamplurk queens are a regional variation of mirelurk kind found in Point Lookout. Like swamplurks, their shells are covered in a mossy coat of algae. However, unlike their mirelurk king counterparts, swamplurk queens spit a radioactive ball of acid.

Mirelurk queens are huge mirelurk variants that originate in the Commonwealth.

Lakelurk[edit | edit source]

Gameplay article:

Lakelurks are a specie similar to mirelurk kings that inhabit Lake Mead and the Colorado River. They possess a green camouflage and the same sonic-based attack as mirelurk kings.

Some of these observations about their armor and camouflage gave me an idea for reinforced, neutral-colored headgear. Here, consider it thanks for not interfering with them. Oh, speaking of which, take these. So you can continue to avoid them in the future."
