Mister Sandman is a perk in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.

Effects[edit | edit source]

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas[edit | edit source]

With the Mister Sandman perk, when you are in Sneak mode, you have the option to silently kill any human or ghoul while they're sleeping. All Mister Sandman kills earn bonus XP - which amounts to 50 experience points per kill on any difficulty.

Mister Sandman is performed in sneak mode and by choosing "pickpocket" on an unfortunate sleeping victim. Choosing "pickpocket" pauses the game and brings up a menu with the options to "murder" or "pickpocket". Choosing the former to activates the perk. When used, a short murder animation follows with the player character looking around and slitting the victim's throat, accompanied by a cartoony jingly fanfare.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • No karma will be lost or gained from Mister Sandman kills in Fallout 3 (you will lose karma for killing a person while detected). However, in Fallout: New Vegas you can gain good karma by killing Benny with the perk.
  • In both games, it is possible to harvest unlimited experience by repeatedly murdering children. Because children are scripted to be unkillable, they will remain alive even after performing a Mister Sandman kill, allowing for more Mister Sandman kills to be performed.
  • If the player has the Contract Killer or Lawbringer perks, killing non-player characters with this perk will not cause the victim to drop an ear or a finger upon death (unless you kill them while detected.)
  • Mister Sandman kills do not affect reputation as long as the character is [Hidden] when initiating the kill sequence.

Fallout 4[edit | edit source]

The Mister Sandman perk allows you to instantly kill a sleeping person, and may improve the damage inflicted with silenced weapons.

Fallout 4 loading screen hints

With the first rank, you are able to automatically kill any sleeping human by activating them while sneaking, and silenced weapons do 15% more damage with sneak attack criticals. The second rank increases this bonus damage to 30% and the third and final rank increases the bonus damage to 50%.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • The "sandman" is a folkloric character who sprinkles sand in the eyes of little children, causing the rubbing of the eyes that is a sign of tiredness.
  • Mister Sandman is also a song, sung by The Chordettes, a mid 1950s - early 1960s Singing Quartet.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png Prior to patch, it was possible to use the perk on children. This would not kill the sleeping child, but the experience would still be gained, allowing for unlimited experience. The bug returns in Fallout: New Vegas.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png It is possible that while murdering the victim, they will wake, stand up and become hostile towards you, however, they will still die after the murdering animation is complete. It seems that when the character being killed starts attacking the player, no damage will actually be dealt by them.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png In Fallout: New Vegas, non-player characters killed by this perk may fall through the floor making it difficult to loot them before they fall.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png In Fallout: New Vegas Occasionally, instead of murdering the non-player character with the normal animation, you character may lie down beside them and/or they will kill them with the animation but the non-player character will sink down into the bed onto the floor or into the ground burying them. This happened with Old Lady Gibson and The Lonesome Drifter.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png It is still possible to perform Mr. Sandman kills on Kenny from the Point Lookout add-on and Sally from the Mothership Zeta add-on after patch 1.5.
