You're n..not here to try and steal my secrets are you?

Murphy is a ghoul scientist living inside Northwest Seneca station in Fallout 3.

Background[edit | edit source]

Murphy was an amateur scientist even back in his pre-Ghoul days, and his tenacity has allowed him to deal with his "affliction."[1] He has holed up in the Northwest Seneca station due to its isolation and has developed a chem far more intense than regular jet which he has coined "ultrajet." Ultrajet is essential for ghouls, as regular Jet has only limited effects on them.[2] Ultrajet requires three ingredients; Murphy has plenty of the first two, jet and Abraxo cleaner, but the other ingredient Sugar Bombs have proven to be more difficult to obtain.[3] Even though these Sugar Bombs are instrumental in the continuation of his operation, Murphy does not dare leave his lab to scavenge them, but he is more than willing to hire someone else to scavenge them, as long they decide quickly and not waste his time.[4][5]

He has a healthy bit of paranoia for keeping the secret of ultrajet under his hat,[6] but apparently has a tendency to misspeak and let the cat out of the bag.[7] Regardless, he has an assistant named Barrett, who acts mostly as a bodyguard if things happen to get rough.[8] Murphy's lab has a tunnel that leads into the metro station in which The Family resides. They mostly stay out of each others business, a relationship that is fine by Murphy.[9]

Notable quotes[edit | edit source]

  • "You got the stuff, I got the caps. A match made in heaven."
  • "The secret of making Ultrajet obviously! Oh dammit, now the cat's out of the bag. Typical me."
  • "So what's the deal. You gonna get me some Sugar Bombs or what?"
  • "Hmmm, so you wanna live life on the wild side, huh? Okay. Go for it." (when purchasing Ultrajet)
  • "All my equipment is ready. Just need some Sugar Bombs."

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Murphy appears only in Fallout 3.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png Sometimes it will take a few seconds for the game to register that you've given Murphy any or all of your Sugar Bombs. You'll say "Here's all the Sugar Bombs I've got.", but you won't receive any caps nor will they be removed from your inventory. Trying this a few times, as well as waiting for up to 30 seconds before speaking to Murphy again, seems to get it to work.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png If you have Fawkes in your party, Murphy will turn hostile towards him and Fawkes will kill Murphy.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png It is very rare, but sometimes after you kill Murphy, and then steal something off of a shelf or from his area, a sound byte of him yelling "Stop, thief!" will play even though he is dead.

Murphy was an amateur scientist even back in his pre-Ghoul days, and his tenacity has allowed him to deal with his "affliction." He's close to making some real Caps with his invention—an enhanced dose of Jet that can keep a Ghoul up and peaking, as Jet has only limited effects on these creatures."

  2. The Lone Wanderer: "Ultrajet? That some sort of super chem?"
Murphy: "I suppose you could say that. Ultrajet is almost double the potency of Jet... perfect for Ghouls. Jet barely affects us you see. Only trouble is it's almost impossible to gather the ingredients together. Say, you might be able to help me with that!"
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "Yeah sure, what do you need?"
Murphy: "It takes 3 things to make Ultrajet. Two of the ingredients I got plenty of. The other one is a little harder to find: Sugar Bombs. I distill it down to its base contents and add that to the formula then presto... Ultrajet. For every box of Sugar Bombs you bring me, I'll pay you 15 caps. So you in?"
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Make it 30 caps each and you got yourself a deal."
Murphy: "Fine, anything to get what I need. Now scram, I got some preparing to do!"
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "Let me think about it a bit."
Murphy: "What is it with you people? Stop thinking so much. That's what got us all here in the first place."
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  6. Murphy: "You're n..not here to try and steal my secrets are you?"
The Lone Wanderer: "Steal your secrets? Not at all."
Murphy: "Good. I was afraid I was gonna have to abandon my lab here. That would mean starting all over again. It's not easy trying to make Ultrajet you know!"
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "What secrets?"
Murphy: "The secret of making Ultrajet obviously! Oh dammit, now the cat's out of the bag. Typical me."

  8. The Lone Wanderer: "What's the deal with Barrett?"
Murphy: "He's my assistant and my backup. In case things get rough. I wouldn't mess with him if I were you."
    (Murphy's dialogue (Fallout 3))
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "Have you ever heard of The Family?"
Murphy: "Sure. I stay away from them and they don't bother me. It's a good relationship. They live somewhere East of here. If you're feeling foolish, I think there's an underground way through to their place deeper in the metro station here."
