My Kind of Town is a quest in Fallout: New Vegas.

Quick walkthrough

It is given to the player by Deputy Beagle who has been tied up in Bison Steve's by Convicts who have overrun the town of Primm. Or if player enters Vikki and Vance before speaking to Beagle, Johnson Nash will give the quest to the player. The player must help the deputy, who becomes controllable with the Companion wheel after accepting the quest, getting rid of the Convicts in Primm.

  • If you choose to have the New California Republic militarize Primm, you have to travel to the Mojave Outpost to the southwest and either possess 20 Barter to convince Major Knight to send support or do a few quests to gain their favor. Completion will result in an increase on prices in the Mojave Express shop due to taxes and negative comments from certain citizens. If this option is chosen, Beagle gets fired from his deputy position.
  • If you choose to hire Meyers instead, you have to travel to the New California Republic Correctional Facility and speak to Meyers. In order to ask the NCR to pardon Meyers for his crimes so that he can become sheriff, you will need to possess 200 caps or 30 Speech. The location for the pardon is with Major Knight at the Mojave Outpost. Meyers is found behind the casino in Primm waiting for your return. Completion will result in a discount on prices in the Mojave Express shop and favorable opinions from the Primm citizens. If this option is chosen, Beagle gets fired from his deputy position.
  • Primm Slim is the most convenient option as it will quickly clear out the Vikki and Vance Casino (Slim included), allowing you to freely take all of the items inside without risk of being seen. Once again if this option is chosen, Beagle gets fired from his deputy position.

Once this quest is completed, the casino will reopen after an interaction with Layla. See Vikki and Vance Casino for more details.

Rescuing Deputy Beagle

After speaking with Johnson Nash in the Vikki and Vance, you will learn that their Deputy is being held captive by the Convicts in the town at the Bison Steve Hotel. Enter the hotel and dispatch of the Convicts within and outside of it (there are 2-3 convicts on the roller coaster). If when you reach the kitchen, Deputy Beagle is still alive, you can:

  • Release him (if you have already completed They Went That-a-Way by taking the short cut)
  • After releasing him, selecting take a weapon will allow you to take his journal (as well as a small amount of other supplies) with no penalty
  • Attempt to pass a speech check (40) and get Deputy Beagle to tell you everything he knows about Benny and the men with him and where they went.
  • Pick Deputy Beagle's pocket and steal his journal to get the information.
  • Kill Deputy Beagle and/or steal his journal resulting in negative karma for killing him.

Once you have released Deputy Beagle, you have the option of simply releasing him and allowing him to leave the hotel, or passing a speech check (25) to get him to assist you in clearing the remainder of the Hotel. You can give him a more powerful weapon and take his journal after telling him "Beagle, take a weapon." If Deputy Beagle dies in battle, you will not receive negative karma for his death and it is very likely he will die in battle in the hotel unless you stay with him.

After the hotel is cleared, regardless of whether or not Deputy Beagle survived, return to Johnson Nash and he will inform you that although the convicts are gone, the town will need a new Sheriff.

NCR

The Mojave Outpost is to the southwest of Primm along the road and up a hill. On the way to the outpost, you can take the route following the road, in which you will encounter two convicts walking towards the Nipton Road Reststop. As you pass Nevada Highway Patrol station There will be Jackal members (including) the leader hiding at the back left side of the the station, (as you look from the front). You can also cut across, which results in encounters with a few Feral Ghouls and many Radscorpions, especially three or four Giant Radscorpions if you aren't careful.

Meyers

The NCRCF is to the north of Primm, on the east side of a mountain that is adjacent to the highway. Unless you are on friendly terms with the Powder Gangers, they will all be hostile by default. To bypass this obstacle, you have a few options:

  • If you have not killed any Powder Gangers yet, you can snipe Dawes with a silenced weapon and loot his key and simply go in.
  • You can disguise yourself with a Powder Ganger's outfit in order to speak to the Gangers peacefully. You will then have to convince or pay Dawes in order for him to open the door for you. If you have neutral reputation with the Powder Gangers, you can pay the entrance fee to the facility and enter without faction attire.
  • You can use Sneak (especially with a Stealth Boy) to pickpocket Dawes and open the door. If you get into a firefight with Dawes and kill him, you can loot the key from his corpse.
  • You can go in, guns a-blazing and kill Dawes, and any other Gangers that engage you, in order to obtain the key from his corpse. If you choose this path, either make sure to flee and come back later with a Ganger outfit or continue onwards into the facility, exercising extreme caution so as to avoid hitting Meyers. He is neutral by default but will turn hostile if you hit him with any of your attacks.
  • If you get the key and use a Stealth Boy before entering, you can cross to a hallway on the opposite side of the room without being detected. Take a free head shot at one of the Gangers to kill him, then back into the hallway and use VATS on each Ganger as they come around the corner into the hall.

Primm Slim

Reprograming may be the easiest option, especially considering a skill magazine can be found in the Nash residence.

Bugs

  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Even though the Courier convinces Meyers to be the town sheriff, people across the Mojave (including citizens of Primm) will mention a disgust in Primm's militarization by the NCR.
    • A similar problem can occur if you put the town under NCR rule, but they will comment about the new sheriff instead of the NCR.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Meyers may become hostile if the Courier enters the prison violently, regardless of whether or not Meyers gets attacked.
  • PCPC Powder Gangers may not attack you around NCRCF even if you are not wearing a gang uniform and are hostile towards them.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 If you're vilified with the Gangers and you bribe Dawes, he and the other Gangers in the area may still be hostile to you.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360If the Courier has completed the quest "I Fought the Law" by helping the NCR take over the facility, Meyers will be locked in a permanent "Goodbye" conversation loop, talking as if the NCR is still invading, even if they killed everything and the quest is completed, thus preventing the Courier from asking him to become active Sheriff of Primm. Sometimes no dialog options are available. (confirmed)
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Major Knight will not have any option for filling out a form of "Pardon" for Meyers. Xbox Version may not have the option either.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Primm Slim wont talk to you.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Even if the Powder Gangers are a hostile faction you will not be attacked when approaching the NCRCF, with or without a powder ganger outfit. You can then proceed quietly into the building after paying the fee and talk to Meyers without a single bullet ever being fired.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 If you have ED-E with you when you go talk to Beagle after freeing him, after asking about where to find a new sherriff, everyone in the Vikki and Vance Casino will start attacking ED-E, though they won't become hostile toward you unless you shoot them.

Behind the scenes

"My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)" is a popular song composed by Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. It was originally part of the musical score for Robin and the 7 Hoods, a 1964 musical film starring several members of the Rat Pack. Frank Sinatra regularly performed the song live, and included the song on four of his records.
