Onions are one of the oldest cultivated plans in human history. Their preference for well drained, nutritious soil makes them an useful vegetable for post-nuclear farmers. Doubly so because of their high phenolic and flavonoid content, as well as other essential micronutrients that are absolutely invaluable in the post-nuclear world. Although never physically seen in any game, onions have likely retained most of their pre-war characteristics; posessing round[1] multilayered[2] bulbs. By 2281, onions have become a staple ingredient in the diet of New California Republic Army.[3][4]

  3. Mikey Frazier: "{110}{}{There's mustard and onions over there.}"
  4. The Courier: "Got anything to eat?"
William Farber: "Oh yeah. You can order up anything you want... as long as it's corn or beans!<Laughs> Just kidding. Haven't you heard? With few shipments from home and little variety, the troops are getting restless for some quality grub. You can only do so much as a chef with just corn, beans, onions, and peppers."
