I somehow knew you'd be the one to make the changes that Leaf Mother Laurel desired.

Bloomseer Poplar is the soothsayer of the Oasis Treeminders in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Born around 2217, Bloomseer Poplar is the daughter of a healer. She took up her father's trade after studying his many books on trees, plants, and their medicinal properties. When she was 35, she heard rumors about Oasis and spent the next decade looking for it. When she finally discovered the site in 2262, she decided to join Tree Father Birch and Leaf Mother Laurel, taking the name "Poplar" and becoming the third member of the nascent Treeminders.[1][2]

While Birch was wary of letting her stay, Laurel convinced her husband otherwise, and Poplar began studying the ways of the Treeminders. Combining her medical expertise with the unique properties of the Oasis allowed her to develop many curatives together with the other founders, with the Ceremony of Purification being one of her most notable achievements[2] (and a source of much needed amusement for Harold).[3] In addition, she demonstrated a gift of foresight, becoming not just a healer, but also an oracle: the Bloomseer.[Non-game 1][4][5] However, using this talent is taxing and she needs to rest for a full day between each attempt.[6]

Her main role is that of a healer and scholar. Over the course of fifteen years, Poplar refined her knowledge of Harold and Bob, harnessing the powers of Oasis for the benefit of its denizens and prospective recruits. Her knowledge of botany and medicine was instrumental in understanding the flora of Oasis and unlocking its potential, complete with the ability to formulate substances that can control the growth and spread of Bob.[7][8] She also helped create the hoods that the Treeminders wear.[9] She is a keen observer, keeping stock of Oasis' condition, including irradiation of the waters below,[10] and Bob's seed production during the annual[11] Harvest Month.[12]

Her talents also have other benefits: She was able to bring a wounded Brotherhood Outcast from the brink of death using her talents and the plants of Oasis, with him abandoning his old flag and joining the Treeminders as Branchtender Linden.[13]

In terms of philosophy, she is closer to the Leaf Mother than the Tree Father. She believes that Harold and the Oasis are a gift not just for the Treeminders, but the entire mankind, and as such should be allowed to grow freely.[14] She doesn't ground her views in religion, but the simple realization that Oasis cannot remain a secret forever: caravans have already spread rumors, and containing their spread would only allow ambitious groups to seize it by force and leverage its fertile environment for their own benefit. Accelerating Harold's spread, as Laurel proposes, would render the issue moot by making it both impossible to control and freely available to all.[15][16] The disagreement and resulting tension between the leaders saddens Poplar greatly,[17] though she appreciates the fact that her position means she isn't obligated to pick between them.[18]

  • Poplar mentions hearing rumors about the Oasis causing her to seek it out. However, the Official Game Guide states that it was a "premonition," suggesting the original idea was to make her psychic powers more explicit.[Non-game 1]

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "So, how did you end up here?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "My father was a healer like myself. He had the most curious books I would read about trees and plants and their medicinal properties. Many years later, I heard a rumor about a place such as this. I spent a decade in search of it. I've been in this wonderful place for over fifteen years now."

Bloomseer Poplar: "I was the third one to arrive here in Oasis. Tree Father Birch was a bit wary at first, but Leaf Mother Laurel convinced him to let me stay. If she hadn't been around, I doubt Birch would have let me stay here. After a while, they taught me their ways and together we developed the Ceremony of Purification that you undertook."
    (Poplar's dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "How do the Treeminders normally handle other Outsiders?"
Harold: "Oh, you wouldn't believe how they handle them. They make them drink this gunk that Poplar makes. Sometimes they just go nuts and start running around, and sometimes when they wake up and see me they run for the hills! I'll tell you, Outsiders are almost as entertaining as the Treeminders!"
    (Harold's dialogue)

(Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue) Note: These lines are alternates, one each spoken once a day if prompted.
  6. The Lone Wanderer: "What do you see in my future?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "Please, I must rest a day's time before I can again see into the future... I find the experience quite draining."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "Where did the Liniment come from?"
Leaf Mother Laurel: "The Liniment was made by Bloomseer Poplar. Her knowledge of His gifts and how they can be used to help us is nothing short of astounding."
    (Laurel's dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "Where did the sap come from?"
Tree Father Birch: "Bloomseer Poplar has a unique understanding of the innate power that lay dormant in the plants you see around you. She created the sap with the knowledge she brought to us from the Wasteland."
    (Tree Father Birch's dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "Leaf Mother Laurel said you may have a gift for me?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "I somehow knew you'd be the one to make the changes that Leaf Mother Laurel desired. I helped to create the hoods that you see all Treeminders wear. It's said that the cloth has a part of the Great One's spirit woven into the fibers. I present this to you as thanks. Wear this with pride and bring the message of renewal to all the corners of the Wasteland."
(Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue) Note: These lines are spoken should the player side with Leaf Mother Laurel during the quest Oasis.
  10. The Lone Wanderer: "Any information you could give me on the caves below Oasis would be helpful."
Bloomseer Poplar: "Be wary of the water in the caves, I fear they still carry the sting of radiation from the bombs."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  11. The Lone Wanderer: "How is it you're causing all of these things to grow around you?"
Harold: "It's kind of embarrassing really. Once a year, Bob decides he's going to go ahead and start growing these weird pods filled with tiny seeds. Well, all it takes is a good wind and the seeds just fly everywhere. I call them Herbert's Seeds. He hates that!"
    (Harold's dialogue)
  12. The Lone Wanderer: "What's causing this place to grow?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "In what we call the Harvest Month, the Great One creates seeds among his branches within seed pods. At the end of this time, the pods open and the seeds are carried quite easily upon the wind. It's quite beautiful. Wherever the seeds take purchase, they grow into trees, plants, grass or all manner of wonderful things."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  13. The Lone Wanderer: "Dying? How awful! What happened to you?"
Branchtender Linden: "I was a Brotherhood of Steel Outcast. We had a deep patrol out here, looking for some tech and then got jumped by some Deathclaws. They shredded everyone else and left me bleeding to death. If it wasn't for Oasis and Bloomseer Poplar, I'd be dead right now. Honestly, I've never seen anything like this place... it's beautiful. It's a shame only a few people will ever get to see it."
    (Branchtender Linden's dialogue)
  14. The Lone Wanderer: "Tell me about your 'god.'"
Bloomseer Poplar: "He's not my god, He's everyone's god. You, me, everyone. This place isn't meant for just the Treeminders, it's for all mankind."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  15. The Lone Wanderer: "What if there are other that don't share your opinion?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "You'd think they'd realize that this place won't remain a secret forever. The caravans know about it and you happened upon it. How long before someone comes to take this place by force? No, I say allow Oasis to grow and that issue becomes moot."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  16. The Lone Wanderer: "I agree completely!"
Bloomseer Poplar: "Oh, if only Tree Father Birch saw it as you do! Of everyone, he's been here the longest. You'd think he'd realize that this place won't remain a secret forever. The caravans know about it and you found it. How long before someone comes to take this place by force? No, I say allow this place to grow and that issue becomes moot."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  17. The Lone Wanderer: "What's your opinion of Tree Father Birch and Leaf Mother Laurel?"
Bloomseer Poplar: "Lately, things have gotten a bit worse between them. It sometimes takes months for them to agree on things. I know they love each other greatly, but I'm afraid the strain of leadership is tearing them apart."
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)
  18. The Lone Wanderer: "You speak heresy! Tree Father Birch should hear about this!"
Bloomseer Poplar: "Heresy? Not at all. Leaf Mother Laurel's word is just as binding as Tree Father Birch's. I have no obligation to follow one or the other. How dare you speak to a Bloomseer like that! I know our laws better than any Outsider would! Now begone!"
    (Bloomseer Poplar's dialogue)

She is the Oasis oracle. Although a few of the occasional visitors may scoff at her "fortunetelling," this 60-year-old soothsayer has often amazed the other villagers with her powers of premonition.
