The Prototype UP77 "Limitless Potential" is a unique energy weapon that can be found and obtained within the Commonwealth, in Fallout 4.

Background

Main article: University Point

The weapon was the brainchild of Leslie Mathews and Curtis Marsh, graduate students aiding Prof. Campbell in his energy research. Although originally working under his strict supervision, Campbell eventually gave them unrestricted access to the laboratory to compensate for the Dean's interference.[1] Their work focused on plasmon containment and increasing energy efficiency in nuclear reactors,[2] and they eventually achieved a breakthrough in October, focusing the electron beam down to around 200 nanometers, achieving improved efficiency and grouping. Although the result was ill-suited for reactor containment, it did promise improved energy consumption for industrial applications and weapons.[3]

However, their research would have no effect on the war effort. On October 23, as Mathews and Marsh were presenting their findings to Sergeant Rivera, the team's liaison, the nuclear attack on the United States began. The sergeant left the laboratory to investigate, asking the young researchers to stay behind until it was safe. He did not return - and Campbell, originally scheduled to arrive around noon, never reached the laboratory. The two researchers stayed underground for the next several weeks, ignoring the explosions continuing above ground.[4] To pass the time and preserve their sanity, they focused on their research, tightening the electron beam on the laser using modified parabolic reflectors. The stocks of food and water kept on site by Campbell definitely helped, allowing them to survive for weeks.[5] Finally, several weeks after the Great War, the two managed to tighten the wavelength down to around 75 nanometers and achieving an impressive capture rate and tremendous power capacity for each of their prototypes. At that point, however, they were already out of food and almost out of water, forcing the researchers to abandon the lab, after exchanging marriage vows. They left this unique laser rifle behind in the safe.[6]

Characteristics

This unique laser rifle features an unlimited ammo capacity, and as such, never needs to be conventionally reloaded, so long as the Sole Survivor keeps a consistent store of fusion cells within their inventory.

Locations

The UP77 is found at University Point, inside of the Credit Union, where the Sole Survivor can discover a bank vault locked behind a Novice terminal. After hacking through the vault door, the Sole Survivor will find themselves inside, where they will have access to the safety deposit safes within. Upon discovering a Master locked safe, a red button will be revealed, and upon pressing it, a hidden room will become accessible, which leads to the prototype laser rifle. This weapon can serve as an alternative to the Wazer Wifle.

Curtis brought up the idea of giving us unrestricted access to the lab, but Prof. Campbell said that he needs to make sure things are established and safe first. Thus far we've had trouble in containing the plasmon scattering from the electron beam. I've checked and rechecked the professors calculations and they seem good, but it just doesn't replicate in our practicals."

The scattering patterns are showing up with much better grouping on the Cathodeluminescence graph. At this scale it may not end up being any good for reactor containment, but we might at least be able to improve energy consumption for small industrial or weaponry uses."

Curtis and I were in early on Saturday so we could try to get through the days experiments in time to go catch a movie when we heard the sirens. Some sort of EMP knocked out the power for a few minutes and Sgt. Rivera told us to stay in the lab and not to leave till he gave us the all clear. But it's been three days and we can hear explosions going off. Prof. Campbell was supposed to be in around noon, but never showed up and our friends and parents are out there. Curtis says everything will be okay, but I can see in his eyes that he's just trying to keep it together."
  5. University Point terminals: "We've been in here a few weeks now according to the date on the terminal. An explosion took out the tunnel to the parking garage just after I made my last log entry. It's quieter, but every few hours we still hear explosions. We've decided to try to continue the research. If we are at war it might help, and if nothing else it will help us pass the time. I've been thinking that if we adjust the angle to the parabolic reflector and focus the electron beam even further it might get us what we need. Prof. Campbell had the lab stocked with plenty of food and water so we should be safe here for at least a few more weeks."
  6. University Point terminals: "Small scale seemed to be the right direction. We brought the wavelength down to around 75 nm and have been getting a pretty impressive capture rate. Both of the prototypes are running at a much higher capacity. We ran out of food a couple days ago, and only have a couple cans of water left, so we have no choice but to to leave the lab. We've no idea what we'll find out there or if anyone is still alive, but we've decided to leave one of the prototypes here, in case Prof. Campbell made it out, so he'd know we finish it. Maybe its a futile gesture, but Curtis agreed with me. He asked me to marry him. If there's anything left out there. I said yes."
