The Ranger battle armor and matching Ranger battle helmet are pieces of armor worn by the mercenary group Reilly's Rangers.

Background[edit | edit source]

Main article: Combat armor

Modelled after the human silhouette and designed to provide balanced protection that does not limit mobility on the battlefield, combat armors are a diverse family of personal body armor of varying degrees of sophistication, from the earliest iterations of the armor developed by the United States Army[1] to the cutting-edge riot gears that came into use prior to the Great War.[2]

The first modern type of combat armor developed by the United States Army[1] to the cutting-edge riot gears that came into use prior to the Great War.[3] consisted of individual armored plates manufactured from synthetic fibers[4] attached to standard load-carrying equipment of the infantryman. The individual components included a combat helmet issued with matching goggles in hazardous environs, front and back ballistic plates, and a pair of axillary protectors. Additional forearm protectors were issued to frontline troops.[5] The lower body was protected by a pair of thigh plates, worn together with a groin and kidney protector. The shins, knees, and feet were covered by frontal plates worn over standard combat boots.[6]

The armor was typically worn in conjunction with standard Army fatigues[7] or specialized uniforms designed for it, with various solid color camouflage patterns (including Arctic white, coyote brown, and olive drab). Rank indicators were typically painted on the axillary protectors,[8] with the Army insignia and identification numbers printed on the back plate.[9][6]

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The Ranger battle armor is a variant of combat armor. The matching Ranger battle helmet is used only by the group's engineer Donovan. Each suit has a serial number (41-90MPW) painted on the back, along with a US Army star.

For players who value Agility over Strength, the Ranger armor is a better choice than power armor, offering relatively similar Damage resistance (1-6 points lower in most cases, 11 points lower than the unique T-51b power armor and the Enclave Hellfire armor) without sacrificing Agility and movement speed or increasing the chance you'll be detected while sneaking (since the weight of equipped armor affects stealth; some forms of power armor also carry an explicit -1 or -2 penalty to Agility, which lowers Sneak).

The +5 AP boost, +1 Luck, and +10 Small Guns make this armor particularly useful for lower-level Small Gun characters. It remains useful for anyone up to level 30, thanks to the good DR, modest weight, and ease of repair.

Helmet[edit | edit source]

Locations[edit | edit source]

The armor can be acquired by pickpocketing the Rangers at the Ranger Compound, or by looting their corpses in the Statesman Hotel. The helmet can be obtained from Donovan, either by looting it from his corpse or pickpocketing, The armor can also be obained as a reward from the quest, Reilly's Rangers. Once completed the player can choose between a minigun or the Ranger battle armor (you do not receive the helmet as well).

Related quest[edit | edit source]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • If all three rangers die in the Statesman Hotel, the player cannot receive a reward or participate in the unmarked side quest Geomapping with Reilly.
  • The armor can be accidentally used to repair combat armor, losing it permanently.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • The armor (confirmed on both male and female models) has the code, 41-90MPW, above a military five-pointed star, possibly suggesting the suit's coloration is largely unchanged from its National Guard or U.S. Army origins.
