Recruit decanus (Latin: decānus, pl. decānī) are the lease experienced, junior-officers of Caesar's Legion. Each decānus commands a contubernium – squad of ten legionaries, ten of these are commanded by a centurion as part of a centuria.
Background[edit | edit source]
Caesar based this rank on the unit leaders of the ancient Roman army. The decanii are recognizable with their helmet surrounded by feathers. The seniority of a decanus measure what colour of its feathers, majority black and some red for a new, black with white tips for a more experienced, and black, red and white for a veteran.
Notable decanii include:
- Decanus Severus, second in command at the Legion base Cottonwood Cove.
- Alexus, Commander of all Legion forces in Techatticup Mine.
- Dead Sea, Commander of all Legion forces in Nelson.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Decanus means leader of ten in Latin. Thus, a Decanus would be a squad leader, and a recruit Decanus would be a leader of a squad of recruits.
