Seward Square is the section of Washington, D.C. in 2277.

Background[edit | edit source]

Seward Square is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and North Carolina Avenue in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C. The square is bounded by 3rd Street to the west and 5th Street to the east. North and south of the park are the respective westbound and eastbound lanes of Seward Square, SE. The park is named after William Henry Seward, the United States Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward is noted for his part in the American purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867. The purchase was ridiculed at the time and was colloquially known as "Seward's Folly".

After the Great War, the area was abandoned. However, the passage of time has done relatively little harm: many of the buildings are relatively intact and public amenities still function relatively well, despite nearly two centuries of no maintenance. The area was picked by Reilly's Rangers as base of operations thanks to its relative good condition and the presence of a reinforced bunker in operational state in one of the few buildings that were destroyed during the War.

Layout[edit | edit source]

Seward Square can be reached through the various Washington, D.C. Metro tunnels or through the United States Capitol building via The Mall. Directly southeast from the Anacostia Crossing station are two monorail tracks of the CMR. Directly to the south is an unique large apartment building. Directly to the northeast on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 8th Street is another unique building.

The station itself is of the standard small design. A concrete walkway enclosing the stairway covered with a glass and metal canopy. Directly in front of the entrance is a <sign thing>, with two metro obelisks directly to the west and north. The station's entrance is positioned to ascend northwest. Situated in the middle of a small park. The park itself is located between Pennsylvania Avenue 8th Street and 7th Street. The park is paved with large red blocks and the walls of the park are brick with decorative metal railings.

It can also be accessed through The Capitol Building from The Mall. A battle between Talon Company mercs and super mutants will be taking place on the Capitol building's steps, with exploding cars in the crossfire. To the east near the subway station (near Reilly's Rangers) is also the location of a scripted Enclave Vertibird drop-off with a sentry bot.

The Capitol Building in the west, near Seward Sq. Northwest map marker. This entrance to the capitol building is also the fastest way to reach the Presidential Metro train to return to Adams Air Force Base. An office building is near the Penn. Ave/Seward Sq. Metro. Additionally, a sky bridge east of the Capitol Building (and accessible via the office building) houses a switch which will call in artillery to be fired across the square. This provides a way to take out some of the warring Talon Mercenaries and super mutants. A sniper guards the switch.

Inhabitants[edit | edit source]

Notable loot[edit | edit source]

  • Pulowski Preservation shelter with Lying, Congressional Style near The Capitol Building (A).
  • If you kill the mad preacher before he detonates the explosives, there are 5 mini nukes in the area below him. The first is directly under the Mad Preacher's building on a pile of rubble. The second and third are under two barrels next to the slide. The fourth is in a shopping cart near the same slide. The fifth is on the merry-go-round. If Dogmeat is with you, having him ferret out the nukes will save you a great deal of search time. There are also 5 inactive frag mines that can be picked up without fear.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • If the add-on Broken Steel is installed, a small sandbag fort with additional Talon Company mercs will appear in Seward Square Northwest, East side against a building, across the battlefield where Super Mutants and Talon Company fight it out outside the Capitol Building back (East) entrance. A few loot items such as cherry bombs, 2 ammunition cases, 2 first aid boxes, suitcase etc., and a new holodisk log titled "Talon Company merc Log #1" on a shelf next to a first aid box. The log talks about Talon Company developments after the purifier was activated. There is also a chance that an Enclave Vertibird will fly over the battlefield, dropping several Mini-Nukes and killing most of the mercs and mutants.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • The street layout is off: the streets are shifted one number to the east (i.e. instead of being bounded by 4th and 6th, the square is bounded by 3rd and 5th).

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Seward Square appears only Fallout 3.
