Drama synopsis[]

A man walks down an alley in Scollay Square late at night and is shot dead by a pair of thugs, who loot his belongings. In doing so, the thugs discover their victim to be Mayor Murphy, much to their surprise. The Silver Shroud reveals himself and kills the thugs, wondering why the mayor was in such a neighborhood at such a time. Suddenly, the Shroud is caught off guard by a sudden noise.

The disturbance reveals itself to be the Mistress of Mystery, who tells the Shroud that the mayor was involved in shady business involving Scollay Square real estate deeds, which she shows to the Shroud, and had come to meet a mysterious benefactor. They soon meet the benefactor, mob boss Fat Fahey, who is caught off guard by the mayor's death and the superheroes' presence. Gunfire is exchanged; Fahey escapes and the Shroud is wounded. Though he tries to downplay the wound, the Mistress recognizes his serious condition and opts to take him to her hideout to recuperate.

Later, the Shroud awakens in the Parlor of Mysteries, still recovering. He talks with the Mistress, who reveals that she had been tracking the mayor's misdeeds for some time. Before anything else can happen, the Parlor is surrounded by the Boston Police Department. The police chief, Corcoran, proclaims that they will both be arrested for the murder of the mayor, and the heroes realize how they have been manipulated by Fat Fahey. After the police break in, the duo make their escape, using a smoke device (retroactively implied to be the Phantom Device) to hide while the police open fire. After the smoke dissipates, Officer Liebowitz notices the heroes have disappeared, to Chief Corcoran's relief.

The next episode starts with a mobster, Paulie, taking a woman calling herself "Candy" into his boss Fat Fahey's hideout. Fahey initially refuses but backs down after Paulie naively reassures him of Candy's harmlessness. He is quickly proven wrong when the Silver Shroud enters, and Candy reveals herself to be the Mistress of Mystery, who used Paulie to get inside. The Shroud executes Paulie, causing Fahey to beg for mercy; however, he soon begins gloating that he is merely a pawn, and the heroes have played into the true mastermind's hands. He reveals that the mastermind has taken the opportunity to raid the Parlor of Mysteries and steal back the mayor's deeds. Enraged, the Mistress strikes down Fahey with the Blade of Bastet, and he is revealed to be a robot. Before shutting down, Fahey orders his robotic mobsters to attack the heroes, who prepare for combat.

The Silver Shroud finishes off the mobbots with his submachine gun. The Mistress speculates about the identity of the mysterious mastermind, only to be interrupted by a still-functioning mobbot head. The bot offers to take them to his creator on the condition that the heroes take him along with them; he explains that his master never cared about his own creations. Finding the offer genuine, the Mistress detaches the head from its destroyed body, and he guides them to a warehouse on Pier 12, which they observe through a skylight late at night. They find the warehouse to be filled with robots, and the Shroud discovers that their masters is a a man in a robot costume. The man calls himself "The Mechanist" and proclaims that his robots will take over Boston. Suddenly, he unexpectedly calls out the heroes, whose cover is now blown.

By the next episode, the heroes are shown captured, tied up and left dangling over a pit of fire. The Mechanist and the Shroud banter before the heroes are suddenly released; the mobbot head had chewed through their ropes, unbeknownst to the Mechanist, who orders his robots to attack them before fleeing. With their weapons confiscated, the heroes defeat the robots in melee combat before pursuing the Mechanist with the mobbot head's help. When they catch up to the Mechanist, the Mechanist holds the Shroud at gunpoint with his own submachine gun, but the Shroud seems unperturbed. The Mechanist opens fire, but to the Mistress' surprise, the bullets ricochet back at the Mechanist. The Shroud asserts that he has some mysteries of his own, including the fact that he is immune to gunfire from his own weapon.

The wounded Mechanist claims that he merely wished to create a better Commonwealth free from human conflict. At the Mistress' urging, the Shroud unmasks the Mechanist, who is revealed to be Mayor Murphy. His previous death and his real estate papers were both red herrings intended to obscure his tracks. Murphy admits that it was his master plan before begging for medical attention. Both heroes mock the mayor's foolishness before the Shroud finishes him off for good with his submachine gun.

Silver Shroud: "Slowly now... Reveal yourself..."

Mistress of Mystery: "Silver Shroud. Fret not, old friend. It's only me...

Silver Shroud: "Mistress of Mystery! What brings you to Scollay Square on such a foul night?"

Mistress of Mystery: "Tracking our dear Mayor Murphy, who was up to some mischief..."

Silver Shroud: "The mayor? So he wasn't here in some kind of... official capacity?

Mistress of Mystery: "Hardly. Here -- let me show you. The contents of the late mayor's case."

Silver Shroud: "But these are... real estate papers. Leases and deeds for most of the businesses in Scollay Square."

Mistress of Mystery: "Indeed they are, my intrepid investigator. It would seem our Mayor Murphy was involved in a rather crooked caper. He was here to meet with some other mysterious malefactor..."

Fat Fahey: "So Mister Mayor, I hope you found the place all..."

[Gunshots]

Fat Fahey: "What the?! Silver Shroud! And Mistress of Mystery!? And the mayor... dead?!

Silver Shroud: "Fat Fahey, the infamous mob boss! So, you were meeting with Mayor Murphy! But why? Tell me, and you may yet live."

Mistress of Mystery: "Best listen to my friend, Fahey."

Fat Fahey: "I'll never talk. And you two are in over yeh heads!"

Silver Shroud: "Mistress of Mysteries! No, I'm... all right. But the mayor, Fat Fahey. We stumbled upon a most sinister plot, old friend."

Mistress of Mystery: "Ha! No, dear heart. The Shroud stumbled -- the Mistress maneuvered. I knew of the mayor's misdeeds for many days. I followed him to that fateful meeting with Fat Fahey. I was about to..."

Chief Corcoran (via megaphone): "Attention! Silver Shroud and Mistress of Mystery! This is Chief Corcoran of the Boston Police Department! We know you're in there! You are both wanted in connection with the murder of Mayor Murphy! Come out with your hands up!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Hmm. It would seem that our leaving the scene of the Scollay slaughter was terribly timed. Incurring the wrath of Boston's finest is an unfortunate and unexpected annoyance."

Silver Shroud: "Unexpected... by us... maybe... But perhaps not... Fat Fahey. I'm starting to... to see into his twisted plan. Agh! Damn this... gunshot wound!"

Chief Corcoran (via megaphone): "Look, heroes! We can clear this up! Come out now, unarmed! I'll see that you two get the best lawyers in the city!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Hmph. Excuse my assumption that even the most astute attorney couldn't help us now."

Silver Shroud: "You're right, Mistress. We must away from your Parlor, and evade the police... Clear our names. And take... Fahey down!"

Chief Corcoran (via megaphone): "That's it! We're coming in!"

[Door being kicked in]

Chief Corcoran: "Silver Shroud! Mistress of Mystery! Hands up, per order of the Boston Police!"

Silver Shroud: "Chief Corcoran! I am Death's Shroud, but you are undeserved of my terrible justice. Think on my mercy!"

Chief Corcoran: "Stop, or we'll shoot! Men, open fire!"

[Gunshots, commotion]

Chief Corcoran: "Damn it! Where did this mist come from?"

Officer Liebowitz: "Wait, it's clearing! Chief, they ain't here! They're gone!"

Fat Fahey: "Oh brother. All right, the skirt can stay. But close that door! Last thing we need is..."

Silver Shroud: "...the Silver Shroud, infiltrating your nefarious lair?"

Fat Fahey: "Holy cannoli! It's the nightmare of night! The deceptive detective! The dark dick! Paulie, you idiot, you were duped! That's no normal dame!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Quite right, you custodian of criminality. For I am not Candy, the captivating companion. It is I, the Mistress of Mystery. I have clouded Paulie's paltry perceptions, to gain access to your den of depravity."

Paulie: "Sorry boss! I had no idea..."

Silver Shroud: "Your mistake is our gain. Paulie, is it? Death has come for you, evildoer. And I am its shroud."

Fat Fahey: "Paulie! No! Okay... Okay, listen... Whatever you want, Silver Shroud. I'll do it. Just don't kill me, too!"

Silver Shroud: "Pathetic and predictable. When faced with fear, the cocksure culprit..."

Fat Fahey: "Ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Oh, you two. Crimefighters? What a laugh. And you call me predictable. You don't got any idea, do yas?"

Silver Shroud: "Why the joviality, Fahey? I, the Silver Shroud, have got you dead to rights. Yet you persist in this mindless guffawing. Not the behavior I'd expect of a criminal mastermind..."

Fat Fahey: "And you're right! Criminal mastermind? Me? Bub, you're as dumb as that get up. I'm just a pawn in this game, pal. Ya see? My master, the real master, he's been pullin' all the strings..."

Mistress of Mystery: "You mean..."

Fat Fahey: "That's right, Mistress. This was all just a big distraction. While we were here havin' our little jaw session, my boss has been at your Parlor. Stealin' BACK those deeds you took from Mayor Murphy's briefcase."

Mistress of Mystery: "Treacherous toad! You defiled my sacred sanctum? For that you will feel my fury! Behold the Blade of Bastet!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Yes, my choleric companion. And no. Robotic Hellspawn they were. But not Fat Fahey's, for he himself presented the facts. Someone else is actually..."

Silver Shroud: "The master of it all. You're right. But who? Dearest Mistress of Mysteries, you and I have battled Boston's Rogues Gallery for years. This... this is someone... new."

Mistress of Mystery: "Certainly! But which criminal culprit has the technological know-how to construct such clockwork calamities? I don't..."

Mobbot: "You don't know anything! <bzzzzt> Ya right! <bzzzt> But I... I do. And I'll tell ya, too... <bzzzt> On one condition."

Silver Shroud: "By the Shadowed Streets of Southie! One of the mobbots' heads is still talking!"

Mobbot: "You're darn right I am. I can't feel my legs, cause ya shot me up good, Shroud. But I still got my kisser. And I'm gonna use it... to tell you where the BIG bossman is!"

Silver Shroud: "And your 'one condition'?"

Mobbot: "You take my head with ya! So I can see you take that creep down! What'd he ever do for me, huh? Okay, so he created me. Whoop de doo. Who needs a father who sends his kids out to die!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Silver Shroud... I sense truth in this clockwork crook. Shall I..."

Silver Shroud: "Use your Blade of Bastet to free the mobbot's head from its now destroyed body? Do it!"

Mobbot: "Ha! Sweet freedom! Thanks, doll face!"

Silver Shroud: "Now tell us! Who is your creator? The robotic puppet master pulling your twisted wires?! Speak, you decapitated electronic evildoer!"

Mobbot: "Ah ah ah... That would spoil all the fun! Ya gotta see for yourself! Come on! Let's beat feet... to the big warehouse down at Pier 12!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Fine, you amoral automaton! We're away!"

[Footsteps]

Silver Shroud: "A moonless night, and an unguarded skylight! Just what we needed to stealthily infiltrate this warehouse!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Yes, and our view from above is advantageous. For the gathering below is unlike any soiree I've ever seen!"

[Robotic sounds]

Silver Shroud: "Robots! Dozens of them! All shapes and sizes! And on the stage... their leader. Another robot... No! Not a robot! A man! In a robot costume!"

Mobbot: "Shhhhh! Shaddup ya dummies! Us robots got good hearing! Ya gonna get yourselves caught. Now listen! Bossman's about to talk."

The Mechanist: "My robotic children! My glorious creations! We stand tonight at the dawn of a new era! For too long, the human vermin of Boston have destroyed this fair city! The flesh is weak! But steel! Steel is strong! You, my children, will usher in a new age! An age of robots! Led by me, your father... The Mechanist!"

Silver Shroud: "The Mechanist! So, evil does have a name..."

The Mechanist: "The revolution begins tonight, my precious offspring! But first... let us welcome our special guests for this evening... Silver Shroud, and the Mistress of Mystery!"

Silver Shroud: "Dangling... over a... pit of fire.... Reminds me of our adventure against the... Chelsea Mangler... eh, Mistress?"

Mistress of Mystery: "Indeed, stalwart Shroud! But that malformed murderer was but a moppet compared to the malignancy of the Mechanist."

The Mechanist: "Malignant, am I? No, Mistress of Mystery. What you mistake for evil is actually... enlightenment! Only I, the Mechanist, truly understand the folly of humankind. The flesh is weak. Metal is the future of Massachusetts!"

The Silver Shroud: "The only future you have is a long nap in a deep hole, Mechanist! To me, you're just another two-bit hustler with delusions of grandeur! And by the way -- you're not fooling anyone with that cheap getup. You're as human as the rest of us."

Mistress of Mystery: "Stalwart Shroud. Glance skyward and see! Our newfound friend, the head of the bodyless bot! And it would seem he's biting... through our bindings!"

[Jaws clacking, rope snapping]

Mobbot: "Hey down there! Mechanist! Ya robot wannabe! Remember me? No? I didn't think so! That's the problem! Ya made me, but ya didn't love me. Ya didn't love any of us, ya selfish jamoke! Now it's time ta pay!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Gasp!"

The Mechanist: "Fools, all of you! Attack, my robot children! Destroy these interlopers!"

The Silver Shroud: "The robots are advancing. And our weapons have been confiscated! So... fisticuffs it is, then!"

Mistress of Mystery: "And furiously fluid footwork! Hi-YA!"

[Kick sound]

Robot: "By order of our master... the Mechanist... you will be destroyed... Deeee...stroyy...ed..."

[Electronic sound]

The Silver Shroud: "And THAT.... is the last of them! Now for the Mechanist. But where did that vile ruffian escape to?"

Mobbot: "Hey! Silver do-gooder! It's me! The head! Heh heh. Yeah, that's right. I'm up here. In the rafters. I'm your eye in the sky! I saw where the Mechanist went! He's in that office -- up the stairs!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Well done, heroic... head. Your adjusted attitude has made allies of us all! Silver Shroud -- shall we?"

The Silver Shroud: "We shall!"

[Running footsteps]

The Mechanist: "Stop right there. Not a step closer! You may have defeated my robot children... but now I will turn your own weapon against you!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Silver Shroud! He's armed with your silver shooter! Your most revered rifle!"

The Silver Shroud: "So he is, Mistress. So he is. All right, Mechanist. It's your move. Shoot. If you've got the chutzpah."

The Mechanist: "I've been waiting for this moment a long time, Silver Shroud. With you and your harlot out of the way, the Age of the Robots can truly begin. Now... die!"

[Several gunshots]

The Mechanist: "Aggghhhh!"

Mistress of Mystery: "Silver Shroud! The bullets! They bounced! Ricocheted right off your raiment. Right back at..."

Silver Shroud: "The Mechanist. That's right, Mistress. For what kind of crime fighter would I be, without a few mysteries of my own? The silver weapon of the Silver Shroud can never harm... the Silver Shroud!"

The Mechanist: "<cough> So... this is... the end... <cough> All I wanted... was a better... life... a better... Commonwealth... free from the petty squabbles... <cough>... of humankind..."

Mistress of Mystery: "We have the why... but not the who! Stalwart Shroud... unmask this miscreant, and reveal the man beneath the metal!"

The Silver Shroud: "Yes! It is time we knew the truth. Who is... the Mechanist?"

Mistress of Mystery: "By the rays of Ra! The Mechanist is none other than..."

[Mask removed]

The Silver Shroud: "Mayor Murphy! Of course! It all makes sense!"

Mayor Murphy: "<cough> My death.... In that alley... <cough> A ruse... He was... <cough> Just one of my robots... But by being... dead...<cough>"

The Silver Shroud: "You could turn your little hobby into a full-time endeavor. And the real estate papers..."

[Paper sounds]

Mistress of Mystery: "A rancorous ruse! A spiteful sham! All to throw us off the trail!"

Mayor Murphy: "<cough> Yes... It was a... master plan... And you... ruined it all... But... what happens now? <cough> I need... a doctor... an... ambulance..."

Mistress of Mystery: "Stalwart Shroud.... Could it be? Can the mewling Mechanist not foresee his fate?"

Mayor Murphy: "<<cough> My... fate? What <cough> fate?"

The Silver Shroud: "Death has come for you, Mayor Murphy... And I am its Shroud!"
