Background[]

The sniper rifle is a long range projectile weapon. Originally .308, this one is chambered in the more common 7.62mm caliber.

Characteristics[]

This weapon has a big aiming bonus when used at long ranges, which comes with a close range aiming penalty which is bigger than the standard penalty other ranged weapons have. As the longest-range weapon in the game, it can be the mainstay of the squad for most of the game: It outranges virtually every other weapon and with plentiful ammo allows the player's squad to gradually wear the enemy down.

Stationary or ranged enemies will typically duck and cover and disappear from sight after a while. Melee characters or those with automatic weapons, such as super mutants, will charge in. As the sniper rifle uses the Small Guns skill, the character can simpy switch to an automatic rifles (like the AK47) with no penalties.

The sniper rifle becomes useless when robots appear, as their high innate damage resistance and threshold render them effectively immune to most Small Guns, necessitating a switchover to energy weapons.

Locations[]

  • St. Louis: One in a chest, another carried by a super mutant in St. Louis mission. Also becomes available from the quartermaster after finishing the mission.
  • Jefferson: Hidden in a fridge on top of the train station.
  • Kansas City: Some ghouls are armed with it.
  • Junction City: Several Reavers protect their camp with sniper rifles from the balcony.
