It was the 'pet' of a traveller. When the traveller died, this damn dog just plopped its furry ass down on my doorstep and wouldn't leave. It's been there for days.

Solve Phil's Canine Conundrum is an unmarked side quest in Fallout.

Synopsis

Phil is an unfortunate denizen of Junktown who has recently lost his home to a ravenous beast, Dogmeat. The dog claimed his front door and refuses to let him in after his original master was killed by Gizmo's goons for interfering with his business.

Walkthrough

  • The quest has no entry in the Pip-Boy and simply requires the player to approach Phil and his companion outside their home. When talked to, Phil will explain his predicament and the context of the situation that has befallen him.
  • To resolve the problem, the player has to either don a leather jacket and approach Dogmeat or feed him an Iguana-on-a-stick (by using it on him from inventory). Dogmeat will then accept the player's character as their new master and become a persistent, if vulnerable companion.

Behind the scenes

  • Dogmeat and the leather-clad traveler who met his end at Gizmo's hands is a nod to Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, where Max travels with a canine companion wearing a leather jacket.
