Take a seat and relax already. You're making me nervous.

Split Jack is a mercenary/bandit leader in the Capital Wasteland, roughly two weeks after the activation of Project Purity in 2277/2278.

Background[]

Once an average wasteland raider, Split Jack cleaned up his act and began to combine his ruthless tendencies with a head for business. Now in charge of a group of bandits, he has come up with a plan for both theft and extortion of the Water Distribution Network. His plan is to attack the water caravans on route to both gather Aqua Pura and harass the network, then go to the network and get themselves hired as security for the increased attacks on the caravans.[Non-game 1][1] He can be convinced of the futility of his endeavor, and will be embarrassed by it.[2][Non-game 2]

Split Jack is recruiting bandits to this end,[Non-game 2] and does not mind if his underlings have invited recruits for him.[3] He is mildly psychotic, though this is not always obvious,[Non-game 1] and justifiably paranoid. As his small band has no true loyalty to him.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

He has established a simple power hierarchy among his crew, and the rules he has established for his bandits are simple. The toughest, those with the mettle, leads. In practice, his underlings do what he says when he says to.[12] He has also established a protocol for those who wish to challenge his control of the gang. Duel to the death, using only agreed upon weapons while wearing the gang's uniform.[13] Which at the moment is metal armor.[14][Non-game 2]

Daily schedule[]

Split Jack is always at Wilhelm's Wharf, leading his crew.

Quests[]

  • Protecting the Water Way: Once Split Jack's name and location have been revealed, the Lone Wanderer can choose to either kill Jack's whole band or replace him by challenging him to a death duel with pre-defined weapons. Additionally, if one has a high enough Speech, they can persuade him to stop hijacking water caravans. However, if this option is chosen, he will then order his men to kill whoever or whatever they please. This usually involves Grandma Sparkle first.

Notes[]

  • Some may say "Split Jack has an eye for business," (his only good one) as the other is covered by an eyepatch.[Non-game 1] He considers those who do are mocking him, which he does not like.[15]
  • Split Jack has a fondness for Grandma Sparkle's mirelurk stew.[12] Should she be dead for whatever reason, he will raid her freezer for what is left of it.[16]
  • Split Jack believes that Rivet City is in charge of the Water Distribution Network and that their person in charge, Officer Lepelletier can afford to, let alone have authorization to, pay mercenaries to protect the caravans.[1][4]

Notable quotes[]

  • "Who the hell are you?"
  • "I'm the boss of this gang. We do what I say. Don't forget that." – This is a Speech challenge failure response.
  • "You're one of the new recruits, eh? And look at that. Already wearing the gang uniform. You best know the pass phrase though, or you're dead." – This option is available should the Lone Wanderer already be wearing metal armor when meeting him.
  • "Damnit, I'm too pissed to talk now. Got to blow off some steam."

Appearances[]

Split Jack appears only in the Fallout 3 add-on Broken Steel.

References[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Lone Wanderer: "So what's the score?"
Split Jack: "No one told you? It's simple. We hit water caravans and stash the Aqua Pura... And after Rivet City's had enough, we offer our 'Wasteland Protection Services.' Then we control the water. And we charge whoever whatever we want for it. How do you like that?"
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  2. The Lone Wanderer: "They're not going to pay you to protect something they're giving away for free."
Split Jack: "What? Well... Damnit... You're probably right. What the hell was I thinking? Guess I'll have to come up with another plan. Come on, boys. Not worth sticking around here. Let's go blow off some steam. Kill anything or anyone you like."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "I came for the job. You still hiring guns?"
Split Jack: "Huhnn. You're one of the newbies then. Fine. So long as you know the pass phrase, you're in. If not -- you're dead."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 Bandit: "Killed the boss fair an' square. Good job kid. Normally that'd make you the new boss, but we're all tired of bosses. But, we liked Split Jack's plan. So if you can get that bitch at Rivet City to buy into our 'protection services' we'll split the take with ya. So we don't need ya to be our leader. But we will cut you in on the protection racket. IF you can get Lepelletier to sign on."
Bandit: "We got nothing to talk about until you've gotten Lepelletier to give us the protection contract. Now, git!"
    (Bandits' dialogue)
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "Pass phrase? I don't know anything about a pass phrase."
Split Jack: "Sad for you. 'Cause only people that know the pass phrase get away with snooping around our business. 'Fraid you're gonna die, boy/girl."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  6. The Lone Wanderer: "I'm nobody you need to worry about."
Split Jack: "Brother/Sister, I worry 'bout everybody. Can't trust no one. You know the pass phrase?"
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "I'm your worst nightmare!"
Split Jack: "That so? You're one of the newbies? You best know the pass phrase asshole. Or you're dead."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "<Say nothing.>"
Split Jack: "You an idiot or something? I don't got much like for idiots. You better know the pass phrase, asshole."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "Open sesame?"
Split Jack: "The hell's that supposed to mean? No matter. That ain't the pass phrase, so you're dead, asshole."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  10. Split Jack: "What is it? Take a seat and relax already. You're making me nervous."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  11. The Lone Wanderer: "I have to go now."
Split Jack: "All right. But sit down and shut up. All your bouncing around is making me nervous."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  12. 12.0 12.1 The Lone Wanderer: "Mirelurk stew."
Split Jack: "Okay. You're lucky you knew that. Don't know who let you in, don't really care. This is a real simple gang. Whoever's the toughest sets the rules, and that's ME. And I got just one rule: Do what the hell I say, when I say it. Now, find a seat. We're waiting for some of the boys to get back."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  13. The Lone Wanderer: "It's time for someone else to take charge. You and me. Right now. Time to die."
Split Jack: "You got a deathwish? Fine by me. Knives, pipes, or boards?"
    The Lone Wanderer: "Knives."
Split Jack: "Great. Here's a Combat Knife. Use that and only that. I get hit with something other than that, or by anyone else, and my boys join in. G'luck. You're gonna need it."
    The Lone Wanderer: "Pipes."
Split Jack: "Great. Here's a Lead Pipe. Use that and only that. I get hit with something other than that, or by anyone else, and my boys join in. G'luck. You're gonna need it."
    The Lone Wanderer: "Boards."
Split Jack: "Great. Here's a Nail Board. Use that and only that. I get hit with something other than that, or by anyone else, and my boys join in. Good luck. You're gonna need it."
    The Lone Wanderer: "Guns."
Split Jack: "Did I say guns? No I didn't. I said, Knives, Pipes, or Boards. I'm still the boss of this gang, so I still set the rules. So what will it be asshole?"
The Lone Wanderer: "Uh, never mind."
Split Jack: "Didn't think so. Now, sit down and shut up."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  14. Split Jack: "Damnit boy/girl! Like I told you, just one rule: 'Do what the hell I say.' We're a gang. We all wear Metal Armor. So put it on already."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  15. The Lone Wanderer: "Ummm... oh yeah, the pass phrase. It's 'Eye patch'!"
Split Jack: "Very funny, asshole. You won't be laughing when I'm done with you."
    (Split Jack's dialogue)
  16. The Lone Wanderer: "I'm here to send you and your gang into retirement. Got any last words?"
Split Jack: "Damnit. And I was just gonna have some stew that Grandma whipped up. Fine. Have it your way asshole."
The Lone Wanderer: "I'm here to send you and your gang into retirement. Got any last words?"
Split Jack: "Damnit. And I was just gonna have some stew that Grandma left in the freezer, God rest her soul... Fine. Have it your way asshole."
(Split Jack's dialogue) Note: This line is an alternate should Grandma Sparkle be dead.

Once a Raider, Jack cleaned up his act and began to marry his ruthless tendencies with a head for business. He has an eye (his only good one) for extortion, and is currently leading a group of Bandits as they attack, accrue, and then extort Aqua Pura from anyone they meet. He's mildly psychotic, but you'd have to be paying attention to notice."

  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.44: "Bandits
Lead by an informally chosen leader named Split Jack, Bandits are roving bands of mercenaries that prey on Water Caravans for sustenance and profit. Wastelanders, Talon Company Mercenaries, and even Raiders and Ghouls are welcome to join the group, as long as a few ground rules are adhered to. To separate themselves from the other scum prowling the Wasteland, Split Jack has instilled a policy of 'metal,' by which every Bandit must wear distinctive Metal Armor and appropriate Metal Helmet headgear. This allows other Bandits to recognize each other in the heat of battle, and victims know who to fear. This sense of foresight also extends to Split Jack's Cap-collecting schemes. He's brought in a new era of fiscal responsibility, with Bandits realizing they can make more money with the threat of continuous violence than by killing alone. This simple extortion is a relatively new idea in the Wasteland, as survivors previously tend to gather what they could, as quickly as possible. Split jack is also running what President Eden might call a 'Dueling Democracy,' with the power able to leave his hands at any moment if a challenger has the mettle (and Metal) to face him in one-on-one combat."
