Caliber and magazine capacity[]

In reality the AK (AK-47) is chambered for 7,62x39mm and uses 30 round magazines - it's well known. But - from what we see in FT plus the fact that Fallout is an alternate history timeline - may be for Fallout universe the fact is that AK-47 was developed for 7,62x51mm instead and used 24 rounds magazines? This would explain some things with the armoury
However, another explanation may be that AK-47s manufactured AFTER nuclear war were chambered for 7,62x51 as there were stockpiles of such ammunitions kept in surviving Pre-War storages and these cartridges were easy to come by

So what do you think?

Sign your posts. Many of the weapons in FOT conflict with the branching timeline of the Fallout universe. I think the possible reason for the differences in the real world weapon and the in-game weapon are either; A) The developers didn't bother to fully research the weapons and make them accurate (most likely) or B) Balanced the AK47 against the other assault rifle class weapons (less likely). As for your theories, I don't think there were a lot of people or places capable of manufacturing a large quantity of modified weapons post war, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. So - I tend to agree with you - if concerning the real-world aspect. It could be a yet another oversight -like P90 using 9mm ammo. --82.196.87.78 11:40, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Given that the Sniper Rifle was 'rechambered' from a .308, to a 7.62, it's possible the AK's were as well. In this case it's a matter of changing bore length, lower receiver for the magazine, and a larger magazine. All of which are certainly possible given the simplicity of the weapon, and the larger round would probably account for the loss of magazine capacity. As would the lack of springs, which you would want to preserve as long as possible so loading only 24 rounds would help. Triaxx2 18:41, February 11, 2010 (UTC)

It could be the rifle was made with a .308 saiga lower.

Fun facts: AK-47 is called AK. There is no such thing as "AK-47", with exception for pre-production prototypes, which never left factory. Modernized AK is called AKM. Subvariants AKSU, AKS, correspondingly AKMS, AKMSU and so on. Only since AK-74 there was a post suffix. The rifle is chambered for 7.62x39 WP ammo. The somehow equivalent to .308 or military 7.62x51 NATO round - a 7.62x54 R(ussian) round was also adapted to use in AK, however in form of a heavy machinegun - PKM and later Pecheneg. None of the modern real AKs use 7.62x51, the only official AK variant using NATO ammunition is an AK-102, which uses 5.56x45 NATO, or civil .223. 77.180.75.58 21:24, January 3, 2015 (UTC)

Here's another fun fact: This ain't wikipedia. What ever the game calls it, that's what we call it. Whatever the game chambers it for, that's what it's chambered for. This is the whole reason why we created the Fallout_Wiki:Content_policy#Similarities_to_real-world_weapons policy. Getting bogged down in trying to fit some fictional weapon, made by devs that probably don't have a complete historical knowledge of all firearms, to anything from the real world is a waste of time. It's great you know the names of some Soviet guns. Perhaps the wikipedia article is where you should be attempting these changes and not here. What you've added to the article is absolutely not germane to the game or articles about it. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 23:29, January 3, 2015 (UTC)

Well... just a question for admins - it seemes like BOTH photos should be in an article- both in-game and real-world (hence the game uses weapon, existing in real world). Could this be done --82.196.72.223 20:19, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
