I've noticed that both this and its upgrade don't like to fully heal you according to the numbers; I've been down less than 200 HP, consumed one and not gotten hit or even into combat and not been fully healed at the end of the healing period.

Prospector with paste

Found a Prospector sitting on the grave, looking west, at Wolfhorn Ranch who had Thin Red Paste (2) in his inventory.Followed him later to the Prospectors Den when upon arrival he had none.--1000HrsFallout3 (talk) 22:54, December 6, 2012 (UTC)
