Forced Evolutionary Virus, often referred to as FEV, is one of the most important mutagenic factors in the history of the wasteland, responsible for much of the mutations in post-War America. It began development in September of 2073 as a cure for the New Plague, which would alter uninfected DNA to render it immune to standard viral infection. The virus is a shifting-absorptive virus, copying DNA patterns much like RNA, storing these patterns in exons. These exons, combined with the FEV, are re-injected into the host cells in typical viral infectious fashion. This causes the host cells to 'regenerate' their DNA with the FEV's corrections. Organisms exposed to FEV generally become physiologically and psychologically superior to uninfected organisms. Among others, FEV was used extensively by the Master to develop his army of super mutants and the Enclave continued research on the virus to destroy all mutated life on the planet.
