Major change to the infobox[]

The last update to the location infobox has removed a some functionality and options of the previous version This includes:

  • Multiple main images
  • local map
  • Custom Icon
  • ability to use a default map , i.e. "PAGENAME loc.jpg" and "PAGENAME map.jpg"
  • The icon now is below instead of overlaying the main image

I just thought I would let you all know so either the template is updated or made aware for older articles - Abedecain (talk) 08:25, November 25, 2015 (UTC)

Using the template in another Wikia[]

I would like to create an identical template in the Finnish Fallout Wikia. What text should I copy from here? I don't know much about creating any templates. ComradeUranium (talk) 22:41, December 31, 2017 (UTC)

Three tabs[]

I'm not sure I understand the rationale for splitting the information into three tabs with the most recent change. It seems the content has been separated without any rhyme or reason, just separated for the sake of separation - hence the generic tab names "info" and "more," not any specific category of content. It just creates more clicks to access content that was perfectly fine where it was beforehand, and in groupings that aren't clearly defined. AllYourFavorites (talk) 00:43, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Better labels are needed for sure. I see the need for Technical to be in its own tab, but perhaps the other two can be merged.

I agree info and more should just be merged together, there's barely enough information between them on a majority of pages. Devastating DaveZIP ZAP RAP 18:48, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
It also creates issues with some pages: see Ethiopia, which only has "More" (as opposed to what?) and "Technical"; or Tanzania, which features the "Technical" tab for just the appearances, which isn't really an accurate link IMO. AllYourFavorites (talk) 19:40, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, that's a problem on perk pages too. If the perk is only featured in one game, it still displays a button with the title of the game despite there being no other options. Devastating DaveZIP ZAP RAP 20:36, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Hey Dave, I fixed this issue and added a few other improvements that were missing from the Perk infobox. The idea with the previous upgrade was to ad hoc a user-friendly experience as we quietly phase the infobox out for dedicated infoboxes such as {{Infobox perk FO76}}. Thanks for the bug report. I have also fixed some issues with the location infobox as well. Hopefully the labels make a bit more sense and now you will have some control over the label when dealing with stub articles. I'm still not seeing the rationale for the split itself. "Overview" and "Info" are both generic descriptors with no real categorization for which parameters are included within them. "Technical" I understand, but the first two should be merged since "Overview" and "Info" aren't actual divisions, they're just arbitrary. AllYourFavorites (talk) 00:36, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Type settlement overrides map marker icon[]

type=settlement overrides map marker (icon):

{{#vardefine:iconImage|{{#if:{{{icon|}}}|{{{icon|}}}|{{#switch:{{lc:{{{type|}}}}}

and this one here:

{{#invoke:Games|title|{{{games|}}}|locations|{{#switch:{{lc:{{{type|}}}}}
                    |settlement
                    |settlement large
                    |settlement medium
                    |settlement small   =settlement
  • Thus if "Fallout 4 settlement" should be visible above the "infobox location" its only possible when type=settlement.
  • If a location is a settlement but isnt using the "tent icon" its set as "Fallout 4 location" above the infobox location.

Example:

  1. https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Coastal_cottage is flagged (inproperly) as Fallout 4 location
  2. https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Covenant is properly flagged as Fallout 4 settlement

Please fix it. Qrsr (talk) 12:54, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Changes to infobox[]

I actually liked the last change (before Eckserah) reverted it just now. Map marker image should be visible right away instead of having to click on a tab first... Jspoel Speech Jspoel 22:53, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

The main reason for this is because it causes the non image information in the infobox to be pushed even further down and while on desktop it's not an issue, it does end up being an issue on mobile as the infobox gets automatically collapsed partially hiding the information below it. The map information is readily accessible in the infobox by clicking the map tab. There was a discussion on the discord about it and the only one in favor of this change was tag. We can't cater to everyone, but what we currently have caters to the highest common denomintor and still leaves things easily accessible for everyone. -Eckserah User Eckserah Head Dataminer 23:06, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Ecks, I appreciate your technical expertise, but coming once a month to complain and revert changes is not the finest look you could have. Neither is lying about who supported it: Me, Jspoelstra, Ant, Gilpo, and Fresh noted that having all the images crammed into one space is suboptimal and even Aiden noted that the way you want it done runs counter to how it's been done here for years.

The arrangement could definitely use work, sure, but asserting "this is how it must be done and if anyone complains they can just click there" is not the way to hold a discussion. Or reverting the change while lying that I was the only person to support it.

It's like the creature stats thing all over again, deliberately obfuscating information because we can't display it perfectly is an incredibly poor decision. 【Tagaziel】 10:14, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Fiddled a bit with the infobox (doing it on a live template as per the user conduct guideline Be bold), moving the information to other tabs and trying to rename them to be more intuitive (if you look for gameplay information, you go to the gameplay tab), though the primary problem I see plainly is the sheer number of headers for groups. In lieu of making them thinner (through CSS, like on PoE Wiki), maybe some reorganization/consolidation would be in order. :I also moved maps to the bottom, so that they are still visible at a glance and can be scrolled down to; still think they should be higher, though. 【Tagaziel】 10:41, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

You know, Ecks might show up more often with things other than complaints if they didn't get such a hostile reception everytime they're here. There's no perfect way to do anything, this mostly comes down to aesthetic preferences of only one image being displayed at a time versus multiple images, and minor details about headers and spacing. I think the problem could have been solved in the previous version of the Infobox by simply switching images, or even in this newer version - when a reader looks up a location, I think that they're more likely to be looking for where it is on the map, instead of for a nice glossy picture of its exterior. If they wanted to look at that, they could just visit it in game. Aiden4017 (talk) 11:06, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
