Detailed walkthrough[]

In order to obtain this quest, Paul Pembroke must have died during Diamond City Blues, and its post-quest interactions should be completed. This can occur in several ways, such as if he is killed by the Sole Survivor and/or Henry Cooke during the confrontation in the Colonial Taphouse, if he is killed by Trish or Nelson Latimer or the Triggermen during the chem heist, or if the player character opts to kill him after the heist to keep the rewards for themselves. Paul's death after the events of Diamond City Blues (i.e. assassinating him for Malcolm Latimer, or manipulating Colette into killing him) will not trigger this quest.

Returning to Diamond City after a day, Darcy Pembroke will approach the Sole Survivor to ask for information about Paul's whereabouts. When she asks the Sole Survivor about it, they must tell her that they will help with the investigation or inform her of Paul's death without implicating themselves (if he was in the heist). Then, after a while (about a week) speak to Darcy again to obtain the Marowski Heist photo and start this quest.

After waiting and returning, speak to Darcy in the Pembroke residence, and she will give the Sole Survivor the Marowski Heist photo. She will explain what the photo means: it reveals the identities of three robbers who stole from the chem trafficker Marowski: Paul Pembroke, Henry Cooke, and Malcolm Latimer. Now that Darcy knows Paul is gone, she wants to use the photo to gain some money to support her family, and she will give the photo to the Sole Survivor with the condition that she gets half of whatever profit they can make from it.

From here, one can either show the photo to Malcolm Latimer in order to blackmail him, or it can be shown to Marowski to tip him off as to who robbed him.

Blackmailing Latimer[]

Malcolm Latimer can be found in the Upper Stands of Diamond City. He will offer 400 caps for the photo, or 600 with a successful speech check. After handing over the photo, the quest ends.

Tipping off Marowski[]

Go to Goodneighbor and show the photo to Marowski. He will give 500 caps. Alternately, if he knows about the Sole Survivor's involvement in stealing his chems (which happens if Trish and/or Nelson survived Diamond City Blues,) he will forgive them rather than insisting they pay restitution for the theft. With a successful speech check, he can be convinced to hand over the caps before seeing the photo. If the Sole Survivor then refuses to hand over the photo, Marowski becomes hostile. If the Sole Survivor escapes Hotel Rexford, they can then sell the photo to Malcolm, resulting in a total of 900 caps (1100 if the Sole Survivor passes the speech check to receive 600 caps from Malcolm). Marowski and Stan Slavin will attack the Sole Survivor on sight, but can both be killed without any negative consequence.

After receiving the photo, Marowski will ask the Sole Survivor to kill Malcolm Latimer for another 300 caps (400 with a successful speech check). This can be refused, although Malcolm will still die either way (several Triggermen will appear in Diamond City and assassinate Malcolm if the Sole Survivor refuses to do it themselves).

Once the quest has been completed, one can return to Darcy in Diamond City and choose whether to split the caps earned from the quest with her or not. If one chooses to keep everything for themselves, Darcy will show great disdain for the player character for the rest of the game.

Notes[]

  • If there are post-quest interactions from Diamond City Blues that have not been done yet, they should be completed. Otherwise, Darcy may remain in the Colonial Taphouse and not acknowledge Paul's death until Marowski and/or Malcolm are spoken to.
    • Colette's scene regarding the disappearance of Henry Cooke does not appear to factor into this.
  • The quest will not show up in the Pip-Boy until Marowski asks the Sole Survivor to assassinate Latimer. So if the player character blackmails Latimer instead, they will get no entries for this quest.
  • The player character will also get no Pip-Boy entry reminding them to give the caps to Darcy.
  • Darcy will be less than thrilled if the player character is only able to obtain a small amount of caps for her. For example, this will occur if the player character turned the photo in to Marowski in order to get out of their debt to him for the theft of his chems, and gives her half of the 300/400 caps they obtained for assassinating Latimer.
  • Assassinating Latimer is most easily accomplished in his home after he goes to bed, especially if Nelson Latimer is dead. Getting caught killing either of them will make the residents of Diamond City hostile.
  • If the player character has Piper as a companion, she dislikes them accepting the "hit" on Latimer. However, if one says no, she likes that. If Preston is present, he will comment about not being hired assassins and love the "no."
  • Cait will like it if one chooses not to split the caps with Darcy when asked about it.
  • Due to the complicated nature of triggering this quest, it is possible that it may fail to start even when the prerequisite choices are fulfilled. If this happens, one can enter Resetquest 457c6, then SetStage 457c6 100, in the console to start the quest (this will cause the quest to appear in your quest log). Afterwards, enter player.additem 0008a1fb 1 to get the Marowski Heist photo, and the quest can continue on.

Behind the scenes[]

Unused dialogue and quest objectives show that Henry Cooke would have been available as another blackmail and/or assassination target for this quest. This would only be possible if Diamond City Blues was skipped by refusing to help Paul confront Cooke, and then leaving instead of following him into the Taphouse. In the current game, Paul disappears, and this outcome leads to the same interaction with Darcy as she has if Paul died during Diamond City Blues. The only difference is that Henry Cooke is still in town, and must be persuaded via a speech check to reveal Paul's fate in order for Darcy to gain closure. After this, Darcy retreats into the Pembroke residence and stays in mourning, but while ordinarily after a week this would lead to her starting The Marowski Heist, on this path Darcy simply stays inside the house with nothing else happening.[verification needed]
