The Rusty Pick is a location in the Ash Heap region of Appalachia.

Background[]

Located on the northern slopes of the ruined Mount Blair, the Rusty Pick was a tavern frequented by miners for decades. In the words of its last owner, it was an old tavern with a secret meeting hall built into the old mine access. Used by the miners after their shifts, the tavern was run by an older woman, Clara Webber, whose husband and sons were killed in a mining accident. Passed down through her family, the forgotten mine access was used as a speakeasy during Prohibition, and then as a secret meeting hall for the labor unions.[1]

When Hornwright Industrial started to lay miners off, replacing them with Auto-Miners purchased from Atomic Mining Services, it also became a nucleus of popular resistance for the miners. They were angry with the executives and paper-pushers who fired miners with no severance or warning, as per the contracts they were expected to sign. The miners organized a resistance movement, protesting the firings in Watoga and at Mount Blair, together with civil disobedience meant to slow down work at the Rockhound atop Mount Blair.[2][3]

However, several miners were arrested for assault after throwing rotten tomatoes at the Hornwright CEO's limousine. Others were arrested for trespassing on private property after the property line "mysteriously" moved a hundred feet overnight, just so the police could arrest the miners. With Sam Blackwell forced into hiding and AMS goons seizing homes whenever ultracite appeared, the miners felt that they had no recourse but armed resistance. The miners organized strikes against the Mega Mansions of the corporate executives, killing two and injuring several with bombs they had stolen themselves.[4][5]

The government retaliated by sending automated security forces after the miners, including strikebreaker robots designed to suppress - and kill - any who would resist the corporate onslaught. At some point, the tavern was bought out by Hornwright Holdings Conglomerate, a division of Hornwright Industrial. Health code violations followed, and although they were dismissed as "unsubstantiated," the establishment was closed for a short time. Food critic Glen Ramos sued the Rusty Pick, alleging that the restaurant violated several health and safety codes and the famous shepherd's pie was made with expired InstaMash, though he lost the suit and the tavern eventually reopened.[6] The day before the Great War, a local musician named Jesse White was to perform a set of songs.[7]

At some point after the Great War, a group of raiders ransacked the tavern, followed by a group of mole miners, who still reside beneath the bar.[Non-game 1] Later, in 2103, Purveyor Murmrgh relocated her shop to the tavern after leaving her previous stall at Berkeley Springs Station over in the Mire.

Layout[]

Outside of the Rusty Pick, the parking lot has a large stage with multiple musical instruments set up on it. Defensive walls guard the side door and rear area of the bar, where a water pump and wood pile can be found next to the non-functional back door. Near the front door is a U-Mine-It! vending machine and a Garrahan excavator poster outside of the bar next to an ice machine. On the roof of the Rusty Pick is a cooking station.

Both entrances to the Rusty Pick lead into the bar area. When going through the main entrance, the bar is on the left along with a hallway. Down the hallway is one bathroom with a tinker's workbench. The stalls in this bathroom show the corpses of raiders who have been killed by mole miners, and left on display behind chain link fence. The other bathroom is permanently blocked, but large junk pieces can be seen through the half-broken door.

The main area of the bar, immediately upon entering the main entrance, has the bar area (now protected by sturdy security fencing), where Purveyor Murmrgh trades random legendary items, modules and vault steel scrap for Legendary Scrips. Another caged area blocking one corner of the dance floor displays numerous weapons, but is unreachable. A gramophone in this area plays a constant loop of music specific to this area, but it can be manually turned on or off. There is also a functional Port-a-Diner next to the front door.

Moving straight forward from Purveyor Murmrgh leads to the dining area where the side entrance door comes in. This area has a Vault-Tec Stash box with the red and yellow mole miner skin, as well as a Legendary exchange machine and a punch card machine. A staircase in the back leads downstairs to an area with Mick Flanagan's terminal, a brewing station, a weapons workbench, a power armor station, an armor workbench and a chemistry station. Through a doorway in the back of this area is a locked and inaccessible caged area full of mole miner tools and weapons, next to a cymbal-clapping monkey alarm trap. Past the trap is a tunnel that leads to the mines deep beneath the Rusty Pick, past several large pieces of junk, including a scrapped Assaultron that may have loot on it. This area terminates in another inaccessible gate, behind which can be seen a non-hostile mole miner and mole rat. Two veins of black titanium ore can be found next to this gate.

  1. Fallout 76 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide, p. 373: "Micky Flanagan's miners' tavern was a popular watering hole in the region, but after the Raiders ransacked it and more mutated foes roam the exterior parking lot and interior of the place, it's definitely lost its customer base. Check the cellar for a possible suit of Power Armor and small mine tunnel addition."
