Tom was Dave's father and the original leader of the Kingdom of Tom, the small settlement that is now the Republic of Dave.

Background[edit | edit source]

Tom was apparently a ruthless dictator that Dave managed to overthrow due to his extremist leadership tactics. Dave managed to take the land and created a democracy for his two wives and children, plus the other inhabitants that remain there.[1][2][3][4]

Whether Tom was killed, cast out, or simply remained in the new Republic of Dave until he died of old age is not known.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Tom is mentioned in Fallout 3 and the Fallout 3 Official Game Guide.

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.330: "General Notes
In the years shortly before the bombs fell, a large number of citizens believed that the U.S. government had become hopelessly corrupt and that the country was in grave danger from anarchists, liberals, and communists. These individuals relocated to remove rural locations, established private militias, and promised that they would one day take back the government for the people. They never got the chance. The bombs fell, shattering all world governments. Most of these separatists were killed in the war or the chaos that followed. However, a few dug in deep enough and survived the worst of the first few decades. Over the past two centuries, this tiny plot of land has been known as the Kingdom of Larry; the Republic of Stevie-Ray; Billsylvania; the New Republic of Stevie-Ray; and, most recently, the Nation of Tom, after Dave's father. Now that Dave has complete autonomy over his subjects, he rules his hamlet with an iron fist but wishes to be seen as benevolent."

  2. The Lone Wanderer: "Your father was a monarch? You mean like the butterfly?"
Dave: "How much radiation have you been exposed to? Not the butterfly, you moron. I meant the kind of leader that holds his office for life. My father inherited his political power from birth and renamed this great nation the Kingdom of Tom. Although I also inherited my political power from my father when I took over I formed a Republic so the people may elect their leader."
The Lone Wanderer: "What can you tell me about yourself?"
The Lone Wanderer: "I'd be interested in learning more about you, Mister President."
Dave: "Years ago, I freed these poor people from the wrath of Tom, former monarch of the Kingdom of Tom. Afterwards, the people naturally elected me as their president, and the Republic of Dave was formed."
The Lone Wanderer: "I really wouldn't know. I just got here."
Dave: "Ah, a seeker of knowledge, then? Well, trust me, an election is what separates a president like myself from a monarch like my father."
    The Lone Wanderer: "Yes, absolutely."
Dave: "Well then, there you go. An election is what separates a president like myself from a monarch like my father."

  3. Shawna: "Let's get class started."
Rachael: "But I already know everything about Dave..."
Shawna: "So who can tell me how Dave saved the people from the wrath of Tom?"
Rachael: "I thought grandpa Tom just gave Dave the Republic..."
    (Shawna's and Rachael's dialogue)
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Dave has two wives?"
The Lone Wanderer: "You're Dave's first wife, right? He has two?"
Rosie: "Well, yes. Dave and I were married when he was wandering the Wasteland, before inheriting the republic from his father Tom. After Ralph was born, Dave said that the President of the Republic needed to repopulate the Wasteland. So now, we have a second wife. <sigh>"
