The United States Army Special Forces, colloquially referred to as the Green Berets,[1] were a division of the United States Army, responsible for a portion of the Appalachian Automated Launch System.

Background[]

Alongside the Intelligence Corps, Special Forces operatives were deployed in Appalachia as liaisons between the Strategic Air Command and the Appalachian Automated Launch System, protecting nuclear launch codes and delivering them to launch crews and their officers when needed. Those who survived the Great War became afflicted by the Scorched Plague, obeying the orders of their scorchbeast masters.[2] Some also became feral ghouls due to the radiation.[3]

The Special Forces became synonymous with combat prowess, and the name "Green Berets" entered common parlance, to refer to elite fighters.[1] Even 160 years later, the term would evoke the same connotations.[4]

Technology[]

The Special Forces were equipped with high-quality military resources, with equipment such as combat armor Mk II reserved specifically for them and shock troops.[Non-game 1]

Appearances[]

The remains of the Special Forces appear in Fallout 76. They are also mentioned in the Fallout 2 Official Strategies & Secrets guide.

Behind the scenes[]

The Army Special Forces are based on the real-world 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne). Both share the same shoulder sleeve insignia and distinctive beret that have earned them the colloquial name "Green Berets."
