KatM 22:05, 19 November 2008 (UTC)I've edited the article regarding "The Paladin Hoss bug" occuring as of version 1.0.0.15. According to Bethesda update notes, this patch does not alter gameplay in any way (content, actors scripts, etc. meaning this minor update does not fix anything important). Besides, I've had Hoss pop up in random sector load places around Falls Church in the retail version as well.

Theory on why Hoss stalks you

Could it be because you stole something from him?

I just took a nap and found Paladin Hoss standing over my bed and Pek running in and out of my house like a nutcase. If Hoss steals stuff sometimes, could this bug be related to stealing something from him? I stole some flamer fuel off of him after I finished rescuing Pek without asking for payment. He didn't notice that I pickpocketed him, I think I did get a neg karma message but he didn't say anything and I got no message that I had been caught pickpocketing. Has anyone had this bug with Hoss showing up in your house but not ever stolen anything from him? Even if everyone who has been stalked by Hoss did steal from him, it seems like there may be a bug in how he attempts to steal it back... (I'm playing on an Xbox 360 with patch 1.1 btw) Geckos 01:21, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Theory crushed by anonymous player: "No, I play as a good player which hasn't stolen anything yet, and he stalked on me and stolen a fatman with ammunition."

He's actually not 'stealing' anything. The locker he takes things from was not set to be owned by the player, so to him he's just grabbing a better weapon he found. Besides, most NPCs don't hold a grudge when you steal from them. If he didn't attack you when you pickpocketed him then he didn't know you did it. Darktangent 19:06, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

I have a theory on why Pek and the Paladins follow you around - if you exit the Falls Church area through the east Metro while they are escorting you, if you then re-enter the Falls Church area right away you'll see them running back to their "guard stations" in front of Pek's building. It appears that each time you re-enter the area, they will then leave their stations and escort you around, until you exit the map again. My guess is that sometimes, the AI can't quite tell that you are no longer in Falls Church, so the Paladins will always try to run to your current location, until they catch up to you; then they will return to their posts in Falls Church - and once they get there, they start tracking you down again, looping until they die.

Paladin Hoss only appears to me after quite a long time. When he said that he would escort me safely out of the place we met, the game may of glitched and he continues to follow me wherever I go, whenever he does reach me he would run back to the place where we met, and once he reached it he would run to wherever I am once again, and I literally mean WHEREVER I am... this doesnt really bug though, and for some reason the initiate doesn't follow me (the other paladin died during the fight with the super mutants)

So basically Paladin Hoss keeps on running back and forth, and the only way to stop this would be to kill him.

Enclave Auxiliary Base Rho

This location is mentioned in the Bugs section. Wtf is it? ABCoLD 08:53, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Well, I'd guess it's supposed to be the Enclave camp with the officer carrying the Experimental Rho ID near Canterbury Commons. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:56, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, right! Thanks. I didn't think of that. ABCoLD 18:01, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Edited the Unmarked quest section

This article needed a bit of work, as it was written in past tense. I've by no means finished it, but I've edited the passages to be more descriptive. The "Bugs" section could probably be re-written, so I'm leaving the tag up there to see if can be condensed. Mctaff350 07:21, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Hoss Sighting

Hoss appeared when I entered the Hubris Comics Utility Tunnels. He seemed to be headed someplace though and not following me. I followed him up into Hubris Comics, then outside (where I was attacked by Talon Company which he completely ignored), and then ignoring the Talon Company as well I followed him into the nearby metro where he abruptly stopped. He's not responding to me and it won't let me interact or pickpocket him (though the option shows up).

Almost the same here! When I woke up with a hangover in my Megaton house, Hossie was standing in front of me and began running away from Megaton. I started following him (he went to super-duper mart, then a bit in the way of Grayditch, through some sewer I don't remember and eventually we came out in the Hubris Comics) and once we got out of Hubris Comics (Talons waiting outisde) and entered the nearby metro mentioned he stopped there. I tried pushing him a almost 50m, but he won't move. This all happened a few days ago.
Despite that, I saw him today running like an idiot across the Wasteland, nearby ... well, near some Gas-Station (really far away from Hubris Comics), carrying a Rocket Launcher.
The Kiw 23:03, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

I once found Hoss dead in the tunnels.

I was minding my own business in the Hangar Bay on Mothership Zeta, sneaking around with my chinese stealth suit and popping skulls with my gauss rifle... when Hoss appears from nowhere right in front of me with a Fat Man... He immediately ran back towards the Engineering Core, and continued to wait outside the door into the Hangar Bay. I could not interact with him in any way, and he did not move when I entered other areas of the ship... Creepy bastard.

stealing bitch!

Paladin Hoss just stole Firelance and 136 power cells from me!

He appeared in my Megaton House and stole my Firelance and 159 power cells too. I followed him outside of the gate to Megaton and killed him and looted my stuff back. What a weird bug. XAmbience 15:52, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Bugs Section

  • Instead of having several bullet points stating where he's been encountered, why don't we have a list like:

Found in:

  • My Megaton House
  • Fort Independence
  • Point Lookout
  • Rivet City - (on PC) - Appeared after fast travel at the bridge and started to run towards Wastelands.
  • Wheaton Armory - (on PC) - Again after Fast Travel. He got stuck and I took a screenshot (if anybody wants proof)
This would be useful. I added a cleanup tag to the Bugs section. --wexer9 00:42, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
I was the one who removed it. All of the unconfirmed bugs will be removed in one week. That's why I removed the tag yesterday.--Kingclyde 00:44, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
That makes sense. Fair enough. --wexer9 13:04, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Bugs

Moving here, since 95% is unconfirmed. Confirm, THEN add.

Hoss is, unfortunately, victim of some of the most serious AI bugs in the game.

  • "Halfway" through completing the quest up to the point of only saving Pek, and then heading back on into Marigold Metro Station will result in Hoss following you around for the rest of the game or until you finish on going to the other side of Falls Church. He will only show up in certain places at seemingly random times however. It is not only terribly annoying but if Hoss manages to get himself killed on these extended roaming sessions he embarks upon, you will not get the XP associated with finishing the incomplete quest. (unconfirmed)
  • Even if you complete this quest, Hoss will often continue roaming around the wasteland and if you return to Falls Church and re-enter the building where the initiate was taken hostage, the initiate will reappear again when you exit even if you had already rescued him previously. This will cause Hoss to continue to wander. Hoss has a predefined wasteland wandering routine where he visits several waypoints. He usually goes past Megaton, down to the Hubris Comics sewers, through Hubris Comics, Marigold Station, Falls Church Station, and then repeats this process. On the PC version he was also seen at the Museum of Technology. (unconfirmed)

  • On Xbox360 and PS3, Hoss may appear in "My Megaton House," in the bedroom after you have slept. Hoss then does not move. The option to talk or pickpocket is given, but you cannot engage in these activities. Instead he just stands there. The real interesting thing is that you can kill him with one punch, while he is in full armor, with no karma consequence. You may then feel free to loot a suit of power armor, a missile launcher, a 10mm pistol, ammo, and a B.O.S. holotag. Now hurry and go sell those items to Moira! (unconfirmed)
  • You can retrieve your stolen items by killing Hoss. If you kill him outright, you will lose karma. However, if you follow him out of Megaton and let him run, he will stop to fight some Giant ants beside a car and a billboard. If you shoot only the car and cause it to explode, it will kill Hoss and his companion but will not generate any negative karma. Alternatively you can start a fight with Hoss and let your follower kill him to avoid losing karma, for example punching him once and letting a follower kill him. Otherwise, simply follow Hoss around the wasteland until he encounters some enemies and is killed by their hands. If he has armed himself with an especially powerful weapon stolen from your home however, this may never occur and you will have to find some other way to dispatch him if you want your unique items back. (unconfirmed)

  • To Prevent Paladin Hoss and friends from following you (and appearing in such odd places as Enclave Auxiliary Base Rho, and every point between), demand payment twice when you first meet him. Upon completion of the rescue, he will thank, pay, and bid farewell to the Lone Wanderer, dubbed mercenary. Then, for a mere -300 Karma, a grenade or two should kill all three (make sure they're close together), for two sets of power armor, a suit of combat armor, and an assortment of weapons. (unconfirmed)
  • On PS3 version, the other Paladin that survived the extraction will instead follow you. The bug cause frame rate issues as well as freezing the game temporally. (unconfirmed)
  • If you choose to decline helping Paladin Hoss then he and his unnamed companion will sometimes freeze on the spot (you can still press the action button to interact with them, but they just say a caption). Paladin Hoss can also sometimes disappear but still show up on your radar, you cannot interact with him though. (unconfirmed)

  • If you enter the second, non-Pek office building in Falls Church while Paladin Hoss is following you, he may become stuck outside at the door you entered (it doesn't matter which of the two doors you enter through). He will stop following you around Falls Church and you can no longer speak to him. This can be fixed in the PC version by using the 'moveto player' console command. (unconfirmed)
  • After completing the Lost Initiate quest, Paladin Hoss may randomly appear when you sleep for over 3 hours. When this happened to me, though he was marked as friendly, Hoss ran onto and was blown up by one of my frag mines. (unconfirmed)
  • If you really want the unnamed side quest you may reload a saved game, if Hoss dies. This has proven to be a bad idea many times, as Hoss may respawn when you reload the saved game but with very low health. (unconfirmed)
  • If you decline the request to rescue Pek, Hoss and the Paladin will wander on and continue to fight super mutants, leaving Pek behind. in addition to this Pek can be found dead in the office wearing no armor, but if you loot his body combat armor can be found on him apparently equipped. (unconfirmed)
  • Without meeting him at falls church he and his buddy may show up at Fort Independence, and kill all the outcasts or vice versa. (unconfirmed)
  • He might appear upon exiting the NukaCola factory, running north towards a small Enclave camp with an Enclave officer and 2 or 3 Enclave soldiers. Initiate Pek also appears on the scene, causing Hoss to state "We are facing an enemy who is better equipped and better trained." You can save Hoss and Pek by simply blowing up the car in the Enclave camp. Hoss and his group will keep on running without further notice. (unconfirmed)

Pretty Unholy Paladin

The thieving bugger stole my reservist's rifle and all my .308 rounds. Its a real pain as i had saved up around 600 or so rounds. I say he should be renamed Buggy the unholy obnoxiously buggy paladin. On all my characters he has stolen 1 rare weapon and it annoyingly tends to be weapons that i highly value. I thought my gear was supposed to be safe in my own house?--121.72.226.115 12:35, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Killing Hoss With no Negative Karma.

Killing Hoss with no loss of Karma and still recieve the unmarked quest reward. Want your quest reward for saving Pek but dont want this unholy Paladin following you around and stealing your stuff? Fear not! There is a way, so long as you can turn a blind eye to the enevitable pain and suffering you are about to cause. Firstly, as soon as you come out the Metro exit, proceed to save Hoss and his mates sorry asses from the Super Mutants, and continue to kill them accross the bridge and upto the building front doors. Quickly run back and talk to him (assuming he hasnt got himself killed somehow) and talk to him about saving the heroic Pek cowering in a dark back room in the building. Hoss will then run with the unnamed Paladin to the building front doors and helpfully wait outside while you do all the work. Go in and get Pek out asap. Then drag his sorry ass outside to the eternaly thankfull Hoss. NOW, this is where it ends, you get your reward and the 3 of them stand around and talk about.. knitting.. or soemthing. Anyways what you do its casualy walk away a bit, but ofcourse you turn around and look back towards the front of the building Pek was in.. Here you will see they are nicely standing in the middle of a triangular set up of cars. One car is very close to them, ontop of anothoer car, another is back neer the left hand side of the fton of the building, and another is over to the right hand side on a pile of debris. You will want to use all 3 to blow them to kingdom come, just to make sure they wont be getting back up again. Firstly equipt your Assult rifle or other large magazine and high rate of fire weapon, and shoot the far car that is neer the front of the building till the flames start to appear. Then quickly shoot the right car on the debis pile till flaming and lasly the closest car till it explodes. In this order you should have all 3 explode at similar times, crating a triagular mini-nuke blast and KAWHUMPH! BBQ Paladin anyone? Go and pickup thier items and be on your merry way. NO loss of Karma (becuase you didnt directly attack them) but the trade off is also no XP for killing them also. Alternatively you can just shoot them all in the head for XP, but you loose Karma for this. (excepet from Pek... becuase, i guess, nobody really likes him. So its all good.)

Killing Hoss + No Karama Loss

On PC version 1.7 Magic Hoss showed up on the deck of Duchess Gambit in Point Lookout equipped with a flamethrower. You couldn't talk to him or pickpocket him. Killing him resulted in no loss of Karma. Good riddance!

mother fucking thieving son of a bitch...

i went to sleep in my megaton house and woke up with paladin Hoss there, he ran out so i followed, curious, when we left megaton he ran into a molerat, naturally he chose to attack it, with guess what? a fat man, but nooo no no..not just any fat man, MY experimental MIRV, he proceeded to shoot the molerat, which was 1 foot away from him, with the MIRV, and blew me, Charon, and most of my other followers to shit, killed himself 2, i reloaded the autosave where we left, grabbed my the terrible shotgun, and proceeded to shoot at him till he turned entirely into giblets, then grabbed my railway rifle, and nailed every body part he had into the floor, god i hate that guy..hes made %1 on my list of most hated NPC's, god i hate him..Toolazytomakeaaccount 22:21, November 7, 2009 (UTC)

Hoss and Co..... In space?

So I was playing through Mothership Zeta and very early into it the unamed paladin materializes. Literally, he fucking materialized out of no where, and there were no doors. So I reload 8 more times and it keeps happening so I kill him. Later I find Hoss runnign aroudn with his flamer in only one hand yelling orders, he then takes out his 10mm Pistol and aim it at the aliens, not even shooting them. My game was really bugged and I had to restart it, but I don;t think a bug was a result, only having weapons in your hand.

Yeah, it happend to me too, in the cargo hold. All of the sudden I hear a BoS member and see the Paladin Hoss pals around with firing at the Aliens. Later, Hoss stole the Novasurge. I reloaded and managed to get the Novasurge before he got it. Still it was odd to see him wandering around MZ.--KnightNapier 23:45, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Permanent follower?

Is there anyway to keep him as a follower?

Found at Pardise Falls enterance

I had just killing off everybody in paradise falls and freeing all the slaves. Then, out of nowhere, Paladin Hoss spawns when I exit paradise falls with an experimental MIRV and all the mininukes (about 20) I had saved and proceeded to the exit and killed grouse (whom I left alive) killing all of us in the process, I reloaded and killed him. This guy is WIERD

How he ever became a paladin is beyond me

I encountered him in falls church, and agreed to help and as soon as dialogue finished he died. I reloaded and this time he decided to steal my beloved unique Chinese pistol I had just aquired from lob enterprises. So I try one last time and he decided to steal my Chinese stealth armour. I mean I know the brotherhood puts recovering technology above all other things like saving lives (except elder lyons god bless him) but come on hoss that's a bit over the top. You help someone out and they rob you, then randomly die without anyone attacking them. Maybe he should get some better power armour.

From twodog

Minesweeper Hoss

I laid down a nice string of mines in Big Town and ran into the town. Soon, I heard booms and got a string of messages about Hoss's body-part cripplings, followed by a karma penalty. There he was, face down in the moat with all the mines gone. And here come the muties! Argh. --Faran Brygo 15:09, April 10, 2010 (UTC)

Paladin Hoss

K another instance of Paladin Hoss going into my megaton home and stealing a Fat Man and a mini nuke and running out, He took off outside of Megaton ran to the right and stops by the car and billboard a ways down He ran into the Talon Company and immediately shoots off the mini nuke. After running into the area where he detonated the mini nuke he was lit up by the remaining Talon Company... man was that wierd... I tried it again and again and same always recieved the same outcome. -Greene, C

I wouldn't have bothered to mention it if someone else had already encountered Hoss in the same location, but upon returning to Adams Airforce Base to round up the remaining Tesla Cannons, I rounded a corner and Hoss was standing right there! To me, this was unusualy, because I've had the bug occur in previous playthroughs and it was always the same; Hoss would appear somewhere and immediatly start following me or run off into the wastes. This time he was just standing there flamethrower in tow, still damaged from the fight at Falls Church yet apparently having been transferred to guard detail at Adams. He was holed up in the completely collapsed hanger directly adjacent to the Mobile Platform. Oddly enough he seem as if he was just patrolling the area like every other BoS in the area. Any chance that Hoss's skin was accidently used as if he was a normal BoS, or is the bug similar to this in other DLC's?68.154.35.26 21:37, July 8, 2010 (UTC)

Paladin Hoss showing up on Mothership Zeta

He showed up on the mothership after I finished killing almost every alien & robot in one hit each or disentigrating most of them.I left the hangar & there he was standing outside of the door.I look up on the internet about it & and found out he steals rare weapons, occasionally follows you & some other stuff so I killed the Asshole just in case he tried to steal from me!99.29.221.87 06:35, July 10, 2010 (UTC)

Ran off with my Nukes!

Taking a nap after wiping out a bunch of Talon creeps and Muties at the capitol building. Wake up to see Hoss streaking by and down my stairs. He bumps into the console, science theme, and gets stuck. As I try to talk to him he wiggles free and runs up to my weapons locker and grabs something. Then he hightails it out the door, I followed... Outside he loads up A FULLY REPAIRED FATMAN and looks like he's going to blast one of Megaton's finest. I blast him with the Nighthawk and find 17 NUKES on him as well. Jerk...

Hoss found Dead on Arrival to Falls Church

I just found Paladin Hoss Face-Down. Will his buddy start harrasing me, or is it just Hoss that's a scumbag?

Jury Street Meto Station and Megaton

Do not re-add Jury Street Metro Station or Megaton to the article. The places listed are DLC locations, which is why they're notable. ----Kris mailbox 01:56, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

Die Hoss Die

I'm thinking you should just probably get him killed ASAP after you finish the mission if you seem him wandering around. I posted a screenshot of where to blow up the car after following him from Megaton. Also, the other posts here make for hilarious reading.

My 1st Hoss Meeting - Saved the Torture

So I exit Falls Church/Mason Dst Metro into the Falls Church area to find some paladin's fighting super mutants. After taking care of the mutants, I go to see where the BoS ran off too, only to find them dead. I saw a named one...Hoss...and reloaded. Still dies. Once more...dead within seconds. So I Alt-tab out, try to see what this guy does. Saw the quest listing and tried again, and again, and again. ONCE, and only once, did he not die within seconds. He died about 20 seconds in after hiding behind a piller (chicken!). So I start reading the discussion looking to see if there is a bug. After reading all these stories about this thieving BoS...sorry...SoB, I am LMAO that I was saved the torture of this guy. For once, the Super Mutants have helped me out. :) 75.81.20.253 02:10, September 16, 2010 (UTC)

Kill Hoss with no karma loss?

When I first got MZ, Hoss magically appeared in the same cell I was in with Somah, and tried to kill her when we were fighting. I had no choice but to kill Hoss because Somah was literaly at her last breath. When I killed him, I didn't lose karma. I R QUIET C0NFEWZED.
