Vault 63 is a Vault-Tec Vault located in the Ash Heap region of Appalachia.

Background[]

As with the other Vaults, Vault 63 was sealed sometime around the Great War in 2077. The Vault remains sealed years later.

Layout[]

The Vault entrance is located inside a small cave, the entrance of which is concealed by a one-room shack. Inside the shack are several junk items. The door across from the entrance opens onto a small balcony with additional junk items, while the door to the left of the entrance leads into the cave. Outside the Vault door is a functioning terminal that divulges about the Vault's status, saying the vault door is "sealed," and the status of the Vault itself is "normal."

Despite the terminal entry displaying the status of the Vault as normal, people utilizing exploits have explored the Vault's interior and discovered it is in a state of considerable disrepair. There are skeletons of the residents, piles of rubble are everywhere, and other signs of general destruction. Throughout the Vault there appear to be numerous miniature air purifiers.

The first room that is seen when entering the Vault proper is the entry hall. It makes it very apparent that the Vault status and the state of the Vault are two very different things. Immediately you can see demolished furniture, overturned shelves, the skeleton of a scientist, and other general debris expected in a failed Vault experiment. The second door on the left lead to the processing area which contains decontamination arches and general Vault furniture. On the upper level of the atrium is a small store.

The atrium is in a state of absolute despair. There are numerous burn marks and piles of rubble, along with overturned furniture everywhere and oddly enough a few impact craters. Along with a few small fires caused by the Ash Heap's ash bursting through the wall. A few small rooms containing generic Vault decorations and a blank terminal can be found here as well. The atrium has a unique ceiling. There also appears to be numerous air purifiers mounted on the upper walls.

A hall leading away from the atrium contains a demolished bathroom with a large hole in the wall. The hole contains an earthen tunnel leading to a partially collapsed mineshaft that is visually similar to others seen elsewhere throughout the Ash Heap. At the end of the mineshaft is a large pit full of flaming debris

There are also numerous classrooms that seem to teach primarily science seen on lower levels containing unique wall decor. Along with these are numerous small labs and medical chambers that seem to imply this Vault's gimmick was based around the study of science.

There are halls made up of the red utility tunnels seen in Fallout 4's "Vault-Tec Workshop" add-on. These tunnels generally are filled with crates, shelving, and rubble.

There are multiple housing quarters located throughout the interior and typically consist of a bed, furniture, and at least one container. Two of these have red tiling and a wallpaper similar to the two Whitespring wallpapers available for purchase in the Atomic Shop. One of these also contains a children's quarters with a unique red rocket wallpaper.

The reactor room consists a control room containing a single terminal whose only function is "Begin cooldown Process" which does nothing. A staircase leads to the reactor, which is a large rectangular shaped room made of concrete consisting of a Vault Star super-reactor surrounded by catwalks with varying degrees of disrepair and rubble. The room also contains a steamer trunk.

Cut content[]

A keycard slot next to the terminal accepts the "Vault 63 access ID card." There's also the "Vault 63 resident ID card" and "Vault 63 maintainence ID cardIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar." Vault 63 also contains a maintenance terminal, a reactor control terminal, a security office terminal, a "security mission terminal," an "engineering certification terminal," a "fireman certification terminal" and a "military certification terminal."

The engineering, fireman, and military certification terminals all contain an option to locate a fireman, engineer, or officer respectively. Vault 63's reactor control terminal has an option to cool down the reactor of the Vault, taking three minutes to complete. The security office terminal has no text or menu items, and the maintenance terminal gives the player character an option to activate the fire suppression system of Vault 63. To the left of the metal bridge, there is an emergency management terminal containing most information about the Vault.

Notable loot[]

There are two ID cards inside the Vault, though they cannot currently be reached:

Vault raids[]

Vault 63 was slated to be part of Vault raids, however, the quests, items and interior cell associated with Vault 63 were never released.

Notes[]

  • It is not currently possible to open the Vault 63 door or officially access its interior without using glitches.
  • The interior and most of its assets have been removed from the game's cell.

Appearances[]

Vault 63 appears in Fallout 76.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Vault has drawn the attention of Fallout 76 players over the years, due to mystery surrounding its purpose. In 2021, when Mark Tucker was asked about any future plans to expand on the Vault, he said he would like it to be a Daily Ops location eventually.[1]
  • On December 19, 2023, Bethesda released a statement detailing plans to expand the map southward. In the associated image, one can clearly see the Vault 63 door sticking out of a red fissure.[2]

Bugs[]

PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Previously, fast traveling to an Ash Heap Horde Event that had its map marker not placed in the Ash Heap (instead, in the center of the world map) would teleport the player to a non-playable Vault interior cell and the player would be disconnected from the server upon loading in. When the player resumed playing, their character would be spawned directly outside Vault 63.[patched]
