Wayne Tournquist was a husband, father, an employee of Med-Tek, and survivor of the Great War in 2078.

Background[edit | edit source]

A citizen of Malden, Massachusetts, Wayne's children entry into their local vaultVault 75 – was subsidized by the federal government[1] as part of the Vault's experiment. However neither he nor his wife Bonnie trusted his employers, their children's teachers, nor Vault-Tec. Instead he, together with his family would construct a plan to survive together. The plan worked... mostly.

Throughout the summer[2] he constructed a backyard bunker and, secretly hacked his director's terminal. Putting in a code that forwarded his logs to him. He also instructed his children, to run and hide from their teachers and that he would come and get them.[3]

On October 23rd, 2077 his director got advanced notice that the Great War was imminent and fled; the rest of his coworkers were trapped when the lockdown was enacted. His eldest son Michael, managed to get his younger brother David away from the teachers and hide. Wayne traveled on foot from his office at Med-Tek Research to Malden Middle School, got his children and together they made it to their home at the West Everett Estates and in their shelter just as the planes were passing over head.[3] His wife Bonnie however would never make it home, becoming trapped at work; Mass Bay Medical Center.[4]

Life in the shelter was a combination of fear and sorrow. All they could do was listen to the radio and gunfire; for three days it was just outside their shelter.[3] Sometime between October 26th and November 9th he tried to contact Bonnie at the hospital. Unbeknownst to him the radio message partially made it through, although another nurse would hear the message. She left a holotape with her friend Marcie and tried to sneak out to get home. She would not make it,[4] by this time the fighting in the city was horrendous. Unable to leave the children alone he was unable to go and look for her. All he could do was tell his son David that mama is coming home and that she is still at the hospital helping people. His son Michael would only glare at him for telling him that.[5]

They would finally emerge from their shelter the night of January 27th, 2078. Their plan to tap into the main from the water tower worked, but the piping took more duct tape than expected and was leaking pretty bad. They didn't have any more in the house so he tried to sneak over to the Cobb's house across the street. Ron Cobb was working with the construction crew in the neighborhood so Wayne figured he might have some. He was in the Cobb's den – where Ron had been working on that Nuka Cola machine – and must not have heard him over the distant gunfire and explosions. To Wayne's surprise there was a cold gun barrel pushed up against the back of his head. Ron told Wayne to turn around slowly, and he was shocked at the level of radiation poisoning he had. It hit him hard, his hair was falling out and half his face looked melted. Wayne begged him to stop, but he put the gun in his mouth and cocked back the hammer. He heard the gunshot, but when Wayne opened his eyes, Ron was falling to the ground, and Wayne spotted Lance Ames from down the street up on Wayne's roof. He saw the whole thing and saved his life. Lance said he had a plan and to meet him tomorrow night.[6]

For the next three months they worked together to barricade and fortify the neighborhood.[2] To get the biggest part done in a night, together he, Lance and Leon Ames stole a couple trucks from the Irish Pride Industries shipyard nearby. – He didn't ask how Leon knew how to hotwire a truck. – Lance had him pull them around to the edges of the yards to start the wall. Wayne however flipped his and almost crushed his house. It was another month before they had the rest of the wall ready. Since then they were keeping watch in shifts, and the kids all enjoyed getting to come out side.[7]

On April 30th, he celebrated his wife's birthday with his children, trying to bake a cake but ultimately opening a can of frosting and writing in his journal.[7] This however was the end of their good fortune, on March 27th 2078 Leon Ames would make the fatal mistake. He and his brother were scouting when they came upon a group of former rioters, immediately Leon started shooting off his mouth about their fort. They let the pair go and followed them home.[8]

Lance knew they would be seeing them again real soon. While he was on watch on the roof he killed. His stupid, cowardly brother pissed his pants and joined the raiders after they overran the settlement. They latter planning to use him as a shield for when they went back into the city.[9] In the commotion Wayne and Michael grabbed David and ran away under fire.[10]
