Buddhism is a Dharmatic (i.e. philosophical) religion which is known to survive after the Great War amongst the Shi of San Francisco.

Background[]

Buddhism is based on the beliefs and spiritual teachings of Gautama Buddha (also known as "the Buddha"), which focus on how one may achieve enlightenment (Nirvana) through practicing the Noble Eightfold Path.[Non-game 1] In traditional Buddhism, the Buddha is venerated more as a teacher than a deity. However, the invocation of the Buddha by the Shi's palace guards in death threats suggests that they consider the Buddha to be more directly involved in the judgement of the soul, presumably to determine if one is worthy of enlightenment.[1]

Additionally, Zen Buddhism survives in the Capital Wasteland with a super mutant named Uncle Leo who emphasizes pacifism and altruism to everyone he meets.

Karma[]

Main article: Karma

Karma is a part of Buddhism that is the measurement of one's actions and intentions and determines if one can reach samsara. In most Fallout games, karma is a quantifiable metric that equates if the player character is good, neutral, or evil.

Appearances[]

Buddhism appears in Fallout 2 and is mentioned in quotes by Uncle Leo in Fallout 3.
