Super mutants are characters living in the Midwest in 2197.
Background
The super mutants, being led by Gammorin, have attacked local settlements and will not let the Brotherhood of Steel have the technology they search for.

Notes
The super mutants at the plateau in St. Louis are extremely dangerous, since they have an excellent range and deal a massive amount of damage. However, they worth much more Experience Points, as one of them gives even more than 2000 XP upon killing it.
