Welcome to Nukapedia!

Hello, CommanderNuka, we are glad you have joined the Fallout Wiki!

Wiki

For assistance, please feel free to reach out to our admins or join the Nukapedia Discord server. We look forward to working with you!

Sincerely, -- -bleep196- (Talk) 01:20, January 10, 2013

Greetings Commander,

Welcome to the Wiki. Glad to hear you're a fan.

Probably the best place to hang out in the wiki is "The Wasteland" our chatroom. You'll often find me and a lot of others hanging around talking about the craziest of things... And when news does break, if often breaks there first.

To help you get used to the wiki, and make your own personal mark, check out this guide on editing your user profile, created by none other than Old World Relics our runner up in last year's apprentice (let me know if you're interested in playing this year).

If that's got you hooked, then I recommend joining the New User Network where we'll pair you with one of the old hands to help you learn how to become an awesome editor.

I hope you stick around.... Agent c (talk) 02:31, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

Great... Can you let me know which fallout games you prefer, where you're from, what times you're likely to be on the wiki, and any special areas of interest; I'll use that to find you the perfect mentor... Agent c (talk) 03:23, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

NUN

I see you signed up for the NUN, its good of you to take the initiative like that. Its a good decision! Have fun editing! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 03:12, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

Hello! So it turns out I'm your new mentor! My name is Stars and Stripes Forever, but you can just call me Stars, Stars and Stripes, or by my real name, Mason. For a little bit about me, I live in Ohio, I've extensively played New Vegas and Fallout 3, but have done quick playthroughs of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. I play on a PS3 mainly, but I also have all the games on PC. I've only been around since May so I was a new guy, signing up for the NUN just like you not to long ago! So how about a little about? What games have you played, what's your console, all that good stuff! Feel free to ask me any questions, no hesitation needed for I normally come running. Right now my main job is to check your edits and do some constructive criticism. As soon as you reply we'll get working on some ideas to get that edit count ticking! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:07, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Its good that you're motivated and want to learn! But the real catch to the editing system is you never stop learning. I still have people correcting my mistakes to this day! So, let's first lay out some framework, the golden rule in my book is don't be afraid. If your intentions are good and you mean well, no one will attack you for making a mistake. If you feel something needs edited, edit it. Even if you make a mistake, only positives can come from it for people will help explain to you what you did wrong. Now, before we get cranking, lets start with something very simple, get an avatar! This helps give you something people can recognize you by and helps add to your character. Why don't you find an image you like in the database and then we'll start looking at some editing techniques. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:25, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Oops, nevermind! I see you already have one (see, still making errors and being a goof :p)! Good work! Now, its starting to get late so do you want to get started tonight or after school tomorrow? USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:27, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Here's a simple test to start, by using the radom page button, keep checking until you find a mistake and then fix it. I want you to do this twice and that way I know what we're working with. Don't get discouraged if you can't find a mistake or your edit is incorrect, we are all human here. I'll report back when you're done. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:48, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

NUN Pt. 2

That's not a surprise, since we're in between games most things are taken care of, but both of your edits were solid, ecspecially for your first two! And yes, C told me you were looking into that! Its great that you're taking the initiative on that! But you will need to learn alot more if you're looking to compete on that stage. But the good news is we have time before Apprentice starts and you'll learn alot of things between now and then. Now, you can continue to do the random page method or go to bed, doesn't matter to me (I'm assuming you're EST or CST if you're from the South). I'll leave you a message tomorrow afternoon and we'll start getting into the good stuff. Good night! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 03:25, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

Hey, send me a message when you're ready to get started. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 20:21, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Ok, first lesson is to avoid commonly made mistakes, so we'll make a checklist. 1. Avoid putting speculation or anything that is unproven into articles, key words to look out for are "possibly", "likely", and "perhaps." The behind the scenes section is the general exception to this rule. 2. We do not cover mods or their materials under any circumstances, with the exception of the J.E.S mod article. 3. In-game statistics like "Strength", "Big Guns", or "Karma" are always capitalized. 4. Alternate spelling of words, like "favorite" instead of "favourite" are generally a minor issue. 5. The only items that should go under the random loot are the ones found on the notable loot page found under the content policy tab. Using some of this new knowledge, use the random page method to get 3-5 edits. Report back to me when you're ready for your first project :) USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 23:27, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Good work, I especially like how you did a revision of a bad edit. My only critique is to avoid doing multiple edits on the same page. Two won't hurt anybody, but sometimes we have people who edit the same page 7-8 times and it makes it difficult to check their editing and fix the mistakes. I also like how you're working on your user page. For uor first project, we're going to be working on some location articles. I'm going to have you go through the Fallout 3 and NV location category pages. Your're going to use this checklist. 1. Check for grammar or spelling mistakes like always (especially in the Bugs section) 2. make sure all game titles or DLC icons are italicized (the Italics button is in the editing toolbar) 3. make sure the captions to the gallery section pictures use proper grammar (sometimes they don't have punctuation) 4. if the game only appears in one game make sure it says "appears only in" instead of "only appears in" 5. make sure the only items in the notable loot list are the ones found under the notable loot guide in the content policy tab (I recommend keeping two tabs open with one of them having the list on it). If it looks overwhelming that's okay, maybe only do every other page or something along those lines. I'll be checking your edits the whole time and we'll talk when I fell you've made enough progress. Good luck! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 17:55, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
Don't italicize locations in case you misunderstood me, italicize the titles of any games or DLC titles in the article, so yes DLC's are included. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 18:06, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
I did forget to clarify (its not your fault) not to put punctuation on captions that aren't complete sentences, my bad. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 20:24, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Once again that's my bad for forgetting to tell you that, even so some of your edits were good and we're going to set a goal of 5-10 article edits a day for your location project. Meanwhile, I want you to go to proposals and applications under the forums and vote on some of the current issues and make sure you do your research first. Also its great that you're willing to stand up for your actions. Just remember to keep things in context. Good work so far. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 20:42, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

Recent edits to galleries

Hi there! I would like to inform you that your last few edits (adding superfluous full-stops to gallery image captions) have been reverted because they are not only unnecessary but grammatically incorrect. Generally, unless there is a full sentence a full-stop is not to be used. --Skire (talk) 20:20, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

Almost all of them are not full sentences. Could you show me an example perhaps? --Skire (talk) 20:25, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
All of these are not full sentences, actually. A full sentence needs at least a subject and a verb, with a full expression. For example, "Bird's eye view of nuclear destruction" has no verb, and "The end result of blowing up Megaton" doesn't have a verb either ("blowing up" is a gerund, or a verb form that takes the place of a noun). --Skire (talk) 20:31, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Whereas that's a valid reply that does not make it a complete sentence at all. That would be implying that we only speak in complete sentences, which would be very unusual! =P And you are perfectly allowed to disagree and me being an administrator does not make my words any more potent than yours. But for a matter like this there is no opinion, only fact. --Skire (talk) 20:41, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
No problem at all. You have the right attitude and willingness to learn, and that is the greatest thing to see in a newer user. Along with a capable mentor like Stars and Stripes you'll surely have a good time here =) --Skire (talk) 20:49, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

NUN Pt. 3

That's fine, if you want you can try character articles. The checklist I gave you would still apply for the most part. And what's the idea? USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 21:27, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 21:36, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Until you got to the very end, none of the apprentice entries were actually up to the quality of a real article, but until you get familiar with infoboxes and templates and whatnot the best method is to open up a new tab, find an article of a Rivet City merchant shop, copy over all the good stuff (infoboxes, templates, etc.) and plugin the info you want, then take care of the background and story. I encourage you to open up your sandbox and experiment (the link is in your welcome message), no one can touch what you do in there. And don't forget your goal of 5-10 edits a day! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 21:55, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Sounds fine to me, Stanley is the subject and sitting is the verb. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 21:57, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Go ahead, we'll have a bot set up later to fix that error automatically, but until then feel free. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 22:03, January 13, 2013 (UTC)
Amazing work so far on the Apprentice! Here's what you could fix...1. make it so that it says your opening quotation is said by Dennis 2. make your main infobox picture the one of Gary's Galley you had earlier and put the deathclaw picture under the following infobox tab |footer = <insert deathclaw pic> 3. add a background section with == on each side of Background (put this before the layout section) the story could go something like this "first founded in <insert reasonable year> by Dennis Nedry, a Paradise Falls slaver. Business was good until the Lone Wanderer swept in and wiped out the slavers. Looking to keep his business alive, Dennis opened up shop outside Megaton, Arefu, and the Jefferson Memorial to service caraveneers. After acquiring enough caps Dennis bought out Gary's Galley and opened up his biggest diner yet. While on a wasteland excursion, Dennis confronted and killed a young deathclaw. It was there he discovered the succulent taste of deathclaw meat, his staple item to this date." 4. delete the notes section 5. add the following infobox tab |name = Nedry's Grill. And then it'll be perfect! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 00:04, January 14, 2013 (UTC)
Amazing! Only thing left is typos, change the 2nd sentence to "is the home of the", change "he got real popular" to "he became very popular", and you need a space between "a" and "deathclaw." Also don't forget to add that picture of Gary's Galley to the infobox as the main picture and if you want a picture for the gallery you should you use Willy Wilson and say he is Dennis. Also, on a side note sign your posts with 4 of the squiggly lines on the key next to the 1. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:38, January 14, 2013 (UTC)
Looking good! Final change is get rid of the staff section and put the following in the infobox |owners = Dennis Nedry |merchants = Eli Roth
Kennedy London USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:58, January 14, 2013 (UTC)
Do the [[]] around Paradise Falls, Jefferson Memorial, Capital Wasteland, and Arefu the first time they appear, then he became very popular amongst the carvans instead of among, next Dennis Nedry was once a slaver (you're adding in the once), and finally change the one sentence to "Later, he bought an area inside Rivet City for a good price." I don't mean to be nit-picky, but we want this to be perfect, yet I'm extremely impressed. Also, remove the foreign language links to Gary's Galley at the bottom of the page. Last, highlight all the text in edit mode, right click it and choose copy, create a blog called Nedry's Grille-Apprentice Qualifier and paste in the text. Congrats! Don't forget to still work on your location and character projects and check out those forum votes. Good night! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 03:14, January 14, 2013 (UTC)

Links

Insert a link with the address you want it to lead to, then insert its display, like this:

[[Point Lookout (location)|''Point Lookout'']]

It will lead to the page titled Point Lookout (location), but will show up as Point Lookout. And if you're unsure, please ask someone or experiment in a sandbox. --Skire (talk) 21:47, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

NUN IV

Keep up the good work on the articles! Now to make your apprentice entry official, leave C a message under the section specialized for apprentice with a link to the blog you made last night. Btw I'm considering throwing my hat into the ring. I have an idea cooked up, I just need to decide if I want to do it or not. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 00:21, January 15, 2013 (UTC)

I'm going to add an editcount table to your user page to help you keep track of your editing. More importantly your article edits. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:20, January 15, 2013 (UTC)
You're doing just fine! Escpecially with the Apprentice work! Even though it isn't articles it proves that you're capable and motivated. Hopefully, if you get chosen for the contest, you can do each sucessive event with less help as you learn more. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:27, January 15, 2013 (UTC)
So, now that you've gotten familiar with the editing process through some of the appearence section work, we're going to aim a little higher. 1. Now we're going to work on putting edit summaries after every edit, its just a few words to describe what you changed like "spelling" or "fixed wording" 2. under the community tab there is alist of active projects we're working on. I want you to find one that catches your eye and sign up (make sure you're familiar with its guidelines and scope before you join) 3. check out some of the Fallout Tactics characters pages, if you check out my recent edits you'll find they're full of grammar errors like using "of" instead of "the" and stuff like that 4. don't forget to vote on those proposals! P.S. Don't worry to much about those appearence edits, they're in good faith and fit the rules, I'm just going to try and get you to aim higher. So its okay to still fix them, we're just not going to go looking for them. Tell me when you find a project! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 00:20, January 16, 2013 (UTC)
Yes! Can you stop in chat? USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:20, January 17, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, just so that we can have a conversation without going through the talk pages. I just want to discuss some things. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:23, January 17, 2013 (UTC)
Whatever you want, if you're having trouble finding stuff, you can check out the New Vegas and FO3 pages with bug sections. Those normally have grammatical/spelling/formatting errors. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:47, January 18, 2013 (UTC)
Go to the bottom of the page and do [[Category: <category name>]]. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 02:53, January 18, 2013 (UTC)
Its a staple of all wiki websites. It helps keep data organized and if someone doesn't know a name completely or has the wrong spelling they can check the category and they'll probably recognize it. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 03:03, January 18, 2013 (UTC)
It is indeed. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 03:07, January 18, 2013 (UTC)
Good! Its the perfect time to reflet; what did you do right, what did you do wrong, what are you familiar with, where do you need to improve? Also this is isn't really important nor required, but I try to keep my article edits to all edits ratio fairly high. Last time I checked, well over 2/3's of my total edits were on articles. Great work so far! USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 01:06, January 19, 2013 (UTC)
That would be ideal. Unless it is on a character page and the quote is said by the page's subject, then's its not needed. Forgot to mention that. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 18:51, January 19, 2013 (UTC)

Did you read the whole message? I added that detail on. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 18:57, January 19, 2013 (UTC)

If you need something to do, someone suggested to me that you check out Category:Attention required. Lots of different problems on those pages that you can check out. Also you could check out the bug project and click on the second link at the bottom of the page. If you then look through the tables and go to the pages with the green check marks you can add {Bug Verification Project}} as the very first line of the page (make sure you add another { to the beginning of that). Almost all of those pages ahould need it except for the FO3 and FNV character tables. Gobs of edits to be had there. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 19:07, January 19, 2013 (UTC)

Please don't unneccessarily change the order of only in sentences. 'Only appears' is a perfectly valid syntax in American English, which this wiki uses. Great Mara (talk) 00:04, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

You can change it, though it's really not priority. Theodorico is looking if he can change it by bot. I'd rather see you spend time on other things. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 00:11, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

Nuka Cola Pic

Hi Nuka, can you confirm for me where the Nuka Cola image you just uploaded is from, just so we can categorise it right... Agent c (talk) 22:15, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

From what we can work out it looks like fan art - quite nice, but we don't include fan art in articles, with a few small exceptions (such as on the page of the artist, where they've later contributed to a game). Agent c (talk) 22:20, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it's all under "bottle cap" (with game) instead of just "cap". Cap will lead to redirect, so make sure to check links before publishing. It'll save a lot of time for you! --Skire (talk) 23:38, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

Hey, man. I haven't talked to you for a few days so I just wanted to know if you had any questions. And I want you to aim for a higher amount of edits per day (EPD). Instead of 5, why don't you go for 10? Only if you have the time of course. USA Flag Pre-War User Avatar talk 17:02, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

Overlink edits

Hey, CommanderNuka, if you could, please stop doing all these "overlink" edits, they're pretty unnecessary, and you could find way better things to edit. The amount of links are fine, and I and a few others would appreciate it if you found other things to edit. Thank you, Dead Gunner's SMG JPG1 "Semper Invictus" 18:07, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

I'd more say depending on page size, 3-4 links is probably best, you could always find better things to edit though, Nuka. You're motivated, you can find things to edit, whether it be reversions of anon edits (like I do) or finding things to add to pages. Try to add, not remove good things, links are overall not detrimental to a pages stability. I appreciate your work, though, keep in mind. Happy editing, Dead Gunner's SMG JPG1 "Semper Invictus" 18:20, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

Pre-war

I undid the edit cause the link is all about the buildup to the Great War. We have no way of knowing when it was built, and beyond that, it had no impact on the build up to the great war, so the link is unnecessary. Richie9999 (talk) 00:42, January 30, 2013 (UTC)

Hey Nuka. Make sure when you're removing punctuation from gallery captions you only remove them from fragments. Complete sentences are fine and should have the appropriate punctuation included. Thanks! FollowersApocalypseLogonihil novi sub sole 01:42, January 30, 2013 (UTC)
