The Commonwealth Institute of Technology, or C.I.T., was a school of higher education in Cambridge, Massachusetts, prior to the Great War.

Background

Located in Boston, Massachusetts, with its campus based near the Charles River, CIT was one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning by 2042. This was also the year one of its most prominent alumni, Robert House, graduated.[2] CIT was one of the most important centers of technological research and development in the pre-War United States, with research encompassing genetic manipulation (Greenetech Genetics),[Non-game 1] nuclear fusion (an underground reactor at CIT later being repurposed as the Institute's own experimental nuclear reactor),[3] experimental polymers,[4] military robotics[5] and software. CIT employees were responsible for the creation of the Code Defender security software, which was revolutionary enough that it would be in use by the Institute for the next two centuries.[6]

The school insisted on transparency, mandating that all students use school-issued credentials when using its infrastructure to ensure equal time for lab use, fairly prosecute damages, and protect the dignity of its staff: in one prank, the school's public terminals were hacked to state that Dean Blackstone "licked butts." The staff elected to track the students down and prosecute them.[1]

After the war, remnants of the Commonwealth Institute of Technology went on to form the elusive scientific society known as the Institute. The founders were CIT students who survived the Great War in the university's subterranean level, and began to expand underground in 2110 to form the Institute's expansive underground facilities.[7][8]

Appearances

The pre-War Commonwealth Institute of Technology was first mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas;[12] it was later expanded upon in Fallout 4 and is mentioned in Fallout 76.[13]

Behind the scenes

  • In Fallout 4, there are three cut holotapes associated with C.I.T.: CITStudent01's dialogue, CITStudent02's dialogue and CITAdmin01's dialogue. No items for the holotapes exist in the game's files, but the dialogue for them can still be recovered. They appear to have placeholder voice lines recorded, likely by developers. The CITStudent01 holotape, in particular, would have mentioned a location known as the Cline building at C.I.T. The Cline building is not mentioned anywhere else in-game.

The Sole Survivor: "What do you need help with?"
Liam: "Our core security architecture hasn't fundamentally changed from the old CIT days. The original security program was called Code Defender. Revolutionary stuff. We still have terminals running version 1 mothballed in storage. With some persuasion, I can get an old terminal to interface with the new security terminals. Enough to open doors, at least. Problem is I can't even crack version 1. So I need a good old fashion username and password, and that's nowhere to be found in the Institute. But if you could get me a pre-war admin password from the surface, I could log right in."
The Sole Survivor: "Where would I find that?"
Liam: "Unfortunately, I don't know. The obvious place won't work. The CIT Ruins were picked clean years ago. But some of the admins had to live off campus. Ask your friends in the Railroad. I need those login credentials."
