Ethyl is a glowing one test subject, held in the Chop Shop's containment area in Underworld in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Ethyl is one of two glowing one test subjects Doctor Barrows keeps at the ghoul clinic, the other being Meat. Both are former residents of Underworld,[1] exposed to intense amounts of radiation. They turned feral and then became glowing ones. Both are the subject of much interest to Barrows, who seeks to further the understanding of their degenerative condition - whenever he is not tending to the laundry list of illnesses that plague the Underworld community.[Non-game 1]

Behind the scenes[]

The G.E.C.K. contains a non-feral ghoul version of her, which was used for a screenshot for the Wasteland Census section of the Fallout 3 game guide, GOTY edition. This version is a member of the Underworld faction and is listed in the "Underworld residents" list. Ethyl, along with Meat, remains in the game files of Fallout: New Vegas.

Nurse Graves: "The Glowing Ones? That's Ethyl. The other one is Meat. They used to be residents of Underworld. Doctor Barrows is studying the link between normal Ghouls, Feral Ghouls, and Glowing Ones. His research is truly fascinating."

When he's not operating on Ghouls with a variety of odd ailments, Doctor Barrows is closely studying a small collection of patients who have succumbed to massive amount of radiation, turned feral, and become Glowing One subjects, such as Ethyl (whose picture was taken before she 'turned'). Ethyl is housed in an inaccessible containment chamber adjacent to his Chop Shop surgery."
