Eugene was a survivor of the Great War, living with his twin brother Malcolm in 2077.

Background

The brothers arrived at the Reeb Marina on November 2. Their plan was to work together to repair a vessel to escape the chaos that Massachusetts devolved into.[1][2] This, however, was not to be, as their personalities and sibling rivalry would be their undoing.

Although they both firmly believed that family should stick together, by November 22, their relationship was strained to the breaking point. They drove each other up the wall, over their bad habits and which direction to take. Malcolm wished to head north while Eugene wished to head south.[3][4] Their final argument left them communicating with each other via notes. Eugene would passive-aggressively ask Malcolm to do something and Malcolm would respond with immature repugnance.[5] It got to the point that Malcolm threatened his brother over who owned the last of the coffee.[6]

By mid-December they both snapped, each planning to kill the other and justifying it by blaming the other; and ironically in the same way. They both planned to manipulate the Mister Handy safety protocols, programming them to surprise the other on their birthday (December 18) then attacking and killing them. Eugene was the first to manipulate protocols (on the 12th)[7] and falsely proposed to bury the hatchet, while Malcolm agreed and manipulated the Mr. Handies on the 17th.[8]

Eugene's plan went forward first, as the robots killed his twin brother. Eugene then put Malcolm's corpse in a coffin and placed it and a vase with flowers off to the side of the property. Afterward, when Eugene returned to the hangar, the Mr. Handies greeted him with the same happy birthday he gave to Malcolm, killing him. His skeleton still lies on the floor of the boathouse.[9]

Appearances

Eugene's skeleton appears only in Fallout 4.

Behind the scenes

A dialogue scene exists in the game's files called "DN112EugeneHolotape1," within the "HolotapesQuest." However, it is empty and no dialogue exists within the scene. As "DN112" refers to Reeb Marina, this indicates that a holotape would have been placed at the location, narrated by Eugene, but this content was ultimately cut.
