Help

Hey Jspoel, havent spoken in a while, but i was just wondering if there was any help that you needed to do with Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas? It's just that I havent been editing for a while now, and would like to be more active on the wiki. Please message back if so. --Jackasaurus 16:25, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

Moderation

I'm going to have it where someone will bring up a point thoroughly and only when they're finished can people give their thoughts on the matter. Only one person at a time so it doesn't turn into a huge chaotic mess. Let me know if you have any preferences on how things are run at the meetings. Dragon Skål! 19:05, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

1st meeting is currently in a little less than 30 hours from now. Dragon Skål! 19:16, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for thinking of me, J. You guys take your time. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 18:29, March 27, 2012 (UTC)

Admin

Thanks so much to you and Clyde for giving me the green light on this! I can't express how happy and relieved I am. There's still room to improve, but I will execute my duties to the best of my ability. Once again, thanks. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 20:25, March 27, 2012 (UTC)

By the way, my bar isn't displaying correctly. It still reads "Moderator", probably due to it being a specialised one. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 20:33, March 27, 2012 (UTC)
Oh ok. Thanks again. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 20:55, March 27, 2012 (UTC)

Favor

Can I ask you for one? I am currently looking for 4 images for a pet project of mine. When a talking head comes up in FO1/2, they show up on a sort of miniature television. (As you already know.) I am just looking for the cut out images of the vacuum tubes on the left side and the speaker on the right side. I am also looking for the vent and the review button found to the left of the dialogue tree and the Barter/Tell me about/Vault logo to the right of the dialogue tree. Dragon Skål! 03:08, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

Yep

The new wiki nav bar is cool. I'm used to it as well. As for the chat proposals, looks like they got shot down. --Kingclyde 18:43, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

Achievement message

I don't know if this is a used achievement, but as I was looking for something else, I came upon MediaWiki:Achievements-badge-name-welcome. It still says "The Vault". I don't know if this needs to be changed or not. The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 20:38, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, J. I really can't tell much about either issue, since I can't get "under the hood" so to speak, and I'm also still pretty limited in knowledge. But it is real interesting to learn some more behind the scenes stuff about how this place works :). The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 21:16, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

User conduct

I think we need to make it a point to clarify that the Fallout Wiki:User conduct guideline applies to chat as well. Cartman used this in an argument as that it only applies to the editing side of things, which is incorrect. How hard is it really to interpret simple rules? What do you think?--Kingclyde 21:34, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

Huh? I didn't say anything about chat at all >_> --User:Cartman!User talk:Cartman! 22:45, March 29, 2012 (UTC)
"Assume good faith: Do your best to assume that other editors are trying to help unless you have evidence to the contrary. Accidents happen, and not everybody has a lot of experience with editing a wiki. "
If this is what you're referring to... this is definitely about edits and the final sentence confirms that, it doesn't mean I can't assume bad faith when strangely coincidental biased voting occurs. --User:Cartman!User talk:Cartman! 22:48, March 29, 2012 (UTC)
Whilst there is nothing wrong with Cartman's interpretation, its not the only way to interpret it. To me, the rule is the bold bit on the page, and the non bold stuff whilst helps guide it, doesn't necessarily limit the rule.
In any case there are 4 main methods to interpret statutes, and if we accept Cartmans proposition that the bold bit is a part of the rule and must be read along with it (Which I guess follows best the Literal rule - Basically it says what it says and thats all it says), I think the mischief rule is more appropriate, the rule is there to stop a certain behaviour (Namely discourage disputes over misunderstandings in ambiguous statements and actions) and thus can be applied in chat, fora, talk pages, etc already. Agent c 23:03, March 29, 2012 (UTC)
Again I'm just going to have to say no. If we read the rule alone it talks about editors and editing only and ends with "Accidents happen, and not everybody has a lot of experience with editing a wiki" which I consider pretty clear and literal. But if we do actually examine the rule as well as the section, you'll notice that it's in a section addressing editors with such guidelines as "do not start an edit war" which, quite clearly, applies to editing. You'll also notice that "talk and forum pages" have their own rules section entirely. We really don't need to start over-complicating this especially when it quite clearly states in itself that it is referring to editing conduct in regard to accusations of vandalism. The attempts to incriminate me are simply going too far when people are trying to paint me as a bad guy for pointing out a coincidence on a forum vote in "bad faith". --User:Cartman!User talk:Cartman! 23:32, March 29, 2012 (UTC)
Hey J. Just a friendly reminder: the new nav bar poll is finished. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 21:56, March 29, 2012 (UTC)

Favour

Just realized how vague I was before. So, something like this with each of the sides outside of the character portrait and dialogue tree cut out to fit in the left and right columns here. You can find what I'm working on under the 1st experiment. Dragon Skål! 06:33, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

I really appreciate that, and they both turned out perfect on my experiment. I can always rely on you, especially when it comes to images. :D Hate to bother you more over this, but I was wondering if I could get two more sides cut out? The ones that contain the barter/tell me about buttons on the right side and the review button and the (vent?) on the left side. Dragon Skål! 16:50, March 30, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again! Check out my sandbox if you get the chance and tell me what you think so far. Columns are giving me a little trouble, but I don't think we have any more forgiving templates that I can take advantage of. :P Dragon Skål! 18:29, March 30, 2012 (UTC)
I would really appreciate it! This is giving me a good learning experience for how templates work and how to size things up properly. Right now I'm teaching myself how to even create a backdrop. :P Hmm. I think all it needs is a little more height and that would be perfect. Stretch them out any more and it'll cut off part of the VA-table. Dragon Skål! 19:06, March 30, 2012 (UTC)
It looks pretty damn good! It was a little too big to have speakers on both sides at SNM, as it cut it out half way through, but I just went ahead and removed the second set as it looks fine with just one. As for my experiment, everything fits perfectly with no cut-outs. :) Dragon Skål! 19:45, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation

I know, but every time I rename a page - like Rick to Rick (Fallout) and want to create a new page, it just leads me to the Rick (Fallout). Clicking several times rename wn't work as well, so I really don't now how to. MS: Destiny conquers all. 14:01, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Nav Bar and more

Hey Jspoel. Sorry for the confusion on the user rights change proposal, these changes have been really getting to me recently and I had to reread it a few times. And also, I noticed we've kept the new nav-bar so far. I'm fine with it, but according to the poll, many members of the community see otherwise. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 19:11, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

And also, could you do me a favour and present me with an award for the weapon condition project? Like Kas, I think it's better if someone else did it. You can find one The Gunny's user page. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 19:15, March 30, 2012 (UTC)
I see. And how about Cartman's reconfirmation request? It seems like most people have had their say, so perhaps the poll time could be reduced? -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 19:31, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Hi J, I'm putting together the news now. If you can gimme a shout on the plans for current votes that would be great. Agent c 19:46, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Let's roll it back to the old one. Maybe at another time we can try it again. I like it other than the fact that i have to be very careful when selecting things because it moves on me. But the community has spoken.--Kingclyde 20:05, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Transparency

This is the last favor I have to ask of you! It's not very important though, and I'm definitely in no rush, so feel free to say no or take your time. :) I don't have the tools at my disposal to convert images into a transparent state, so I was wondering if you could help me out with that. The ones images I'm interested in would be these two: SNM banner.png | 683px-Strategic Nuclear Moose Logo PNG3- No Background.png Dragon Skål! 19:58, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Not sure what I'll do yet, but I'm going to have to come up with something to give you in return for your help. I'm very grateful for it. :) Dragon Skål! 20:50, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

User rights

I closed the poll so we can rewrite it. I like you proposal but I mainly wanted to remove the moderator position as it does not exist. That was my main goal.--Kingclyde 20:43, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Forum

I made the new forum header for votes specifically. That way the wiki discussion doesn't get clogged up. I answer a question in there that got buried by all the requests.--Kingclyde 21:01, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Issue with the Chat name

Hi Jspoelstra. This isn't an issue in your wiki's JS but the name has been cached on our server. I believe this is because the Chat has never been empty since the sitename was changed, so the Chat room hasn't been "recreated" with the name Fallout Wiki. I'm passing this on to the team responsible for Chat to see how it can be fixed. :) Cheers, grunny:~$ 13:04, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

Possibly. That's just my theory based on some quick testing, so if you're willing to try that, have everyone leave and then join after everyone has left for a little while, it might fix it. If it doesn't, then we'd have to wait until one of the engineers who works on chat to get back to me. Cheers, grunny:~$ 13:12, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

Sounds good, I have to go to school now, so I won't be a problem:) Kicking was the only way I could think to get the away people out, let's hope it works:)--Bunny2Bubble 13:54, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

Lucky Horseshoes

Hi About Lucky Horseshoes with Festus at Fallout: New Vegas. It says there is no way for draw, yet it can end with scores i.e. 22-20, 25-17, etc. In which case both are equally close to 21, and it doesn't bumb up one at that point. Festus itself didn't mention about this, but when I got that situation few times myself, to me it seemed like the bigger would be the winning one; in mentioned cases 22 and 25. I first tryed checking here but didn't find anything about it, and small things bothers my mind. Just though to mention/ask if anybody here knows/'wants to confirm' the correct answer. I didn't have slightest of clue where to distress this subject at this fallout wikia, so I just gave a random shot to place it here. Advice me to do better if needed. --John Acey 16:11, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

I don't think it works like that. Few scenarios: 1. Festus got first 25, and I then got 17. Festus then decided to hold, so I decided to hold too. Where Festus said that if you hold now you lose, so let's just pretend you drew, and gave me a card. Which was a 10, so either Festus is a cheater.. 2. I first got 26, and then Festus got 16, I holded on 26 but Festus drew more, he then got 8 and won me with 24. To me it seems like if players get equally close with lower and bigger, then the one that got there first has the advantage, no matter if he has the lower or the bigger. I'm playing PC version. --John Acey 10:55, April 4, 2012 (UTC)

Great Mara

Hey Jspoel. I just realised: Great Mara only has rollback, not patroller rights. I thought since he's categorised as a "patroller", and even has the recognition and bar, he should be given the official patroller rights too. -SigmaDelta54(Talk) 19:18, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

Using the Info Boxes for videos

Hey, I need some information on something, I know you're pretty high up here but if you're not the person I need to go to with this please direct me in the right direction.

I make youtube videos, and my main content is playthroughs. I finished a playthrough of Fallout 3 and enjoyed making it very much. I plan on doing a playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas in the summer when I have more time for such a large project.

For this playthrough I have decided to go more in depth with the information I show, I plan on creating bios for all the unique weapons to go on screen while I'm talking about them, rather than just standing still and looking at the sky/ground in-game.

For these, I want to put damage stats and other information along with picture I take from the capture card in-game. I like the design for info boxes on your pages so much that I thought I would just crop a screenshot of them directly into the bio itself. Of cource, I would credit the website on screen and leave a link the video description directly to the website and specific page.

My question is: would I be allowed to do this? If so, what procedures would I need to go through?

Thanks, - Puddy =]

Attempted backroom deals

Check this out:

  • Tranquility Lane- the Fallout fanfiction wiki

I noticed that the Fallout fan fiction wiki associated with The Vault has not been moved away from Wikia. In addition, I have also noticed that they seem to be actively displaying a large link to Wikia's Nukapedia on their main page, Nukapedia being Wikia's greedy pseudo plagiarized attempt to steal users away from us by maintaing a mirror of the old Vault.

I could setup a wiki at Wikkii.net wiki hosting, which is basically the same features as setting up your own wiki with a professional web hosting company. We could also use our same falloutwiki.com domain name with it. I can go ahead and set it up if you'd be interested. All I'd really need here is for the link to the fanon wiki on the main page to be changed to the new one since they're apparently stabbing us in the back.

There's also a need to move the wiki away from Wikia, since their skin is hard to use, hard to read, hard to navigate, and they've apparently decided to sellout the wiki background as advertising space, meaning that every user sees meaningless kitsch on every page of the wiki, which just degrades it's content.

Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus Sturmkrieg Sektor (Contributions) (Edit Count) 02:17, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Anyways, I think we need to keep an eye on this user in case they get the funny idea to continue with their plan of stealing and then converting content over from the Wikia variant to a Curse variant. Dragon Skål! 04:02, April 8, 2012 (UTC)

Patrolling application.

Hello, Jspoel!
As you know, I'm George (aka Crimson Frankie). I've been contributing to the wiki for 31 days now. I'm currently leading two projects(the Fallout 1 and 2 Quotations Project and the Fallout 2 areas and evironment project), and my editcount has got over 1000 (with more than 750 edits dedicated to articles). I have a friendly relationship with everybody here, and I've also partnered with some users for project purposes. Over the last couple of days, some notable members have personally suggested that I applied for patroller, and through this message I'd like to do so. With the position of a patroller, I would be able to 1. Help the community even more; 2. Learn massively as an editor; 3. Replace Mystery Stranger, who is most definitely going to be promoted to Administrator, and the wiki will miss one patroller after that.
I hope you consider my points, and honestly, I still don't know that much about doing what a patroller does, but that's why the words "learning" and "practising" exist. All I want is to grow here, and especially help the wiki keep being what it was to me back when I used to be an anon looking for additional information on the Fallout lore. My focus and utmost passion are the older games, so I'm especially willing to work on improving info on them here.
If you say yes, I'll be very much pleased. If you say no, I'll understand your position and wait a bit more for another opportunity.
Cheers,

You may talk to him and me in chat or upon the talk page here if you have doubts, for me and him have been calculating the weapon's damage, condition, and even the SPREAD of weaponry. I basically tested them out upon game console, not even using the GECK, by doing rough human testing, firing a specific weapon from 100% condition down to the very 0%, counting every shot and tallying them before coming back to Gunny about the results, sometimes doing this 3-4 times because of human error.--Zerginfestor 01:41, April 22, 2012 (UTC)Zerginfestor

Speculation rule

Evening, I need to protest the current rule on gun speculation. The current rule boils down to "If the devs didn't say what it is, we don't know what the hell it is!" To me, this is outrageous. The internet has terabytes of data about firearms, this, coupled with wiki contributors who can tell the differences between them can easily identify what in-game weapon is based off of.

Some admins told me that we could be spreading mis-information if we allow free editing, but who is to say that the devs know what they are even talking about? The current rule sounds like the developers are the gods of weapon information, doling that out as they please. JE Sawyer himself was wrong about the Service Rifle, it is an M16A1, NOT an AR-15 as he described.

Also, if the rules say there is no speculation on the guns, then why is there speculation allowed on the pop culture reference pages? I've brought this up several times, but never received a straight answer.

All I ask is for you to look at the policy and consider revising it. If you are really worried about flame wars over "this gun is X instead of Y" consider this: the only people I fought to put the information up were the damn admins! Bearded Hoplite 02:24, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

OK I have tracked down the issue, it is because we did a complete overhaul of the whole mbox system from top to bottom. So to get it working you would have to import all associated templates, including the mbox base template. You may also require some of the CSS as well. User:AvatarUser talk:Avatar 16:53, April 23, 2012 (UTC)
It would probably be best to ask Porter, since I don't know how deep he went into all the aux templates etc. for the overhaul. But thing like this are going to get harder and harder as time goes on, due to template/CSS changes both here and at The Vault having an ever increasing chance of conflicting existing templates/CSS when imported. As you have experienced, its one thing to simply import a template, but it takes a whole lot more to then adjust those templates to work here based on the differences of the site and also its software. For example Wikia is running Mediawiki software 1.16.5, while are running the newer 1.18.2. So far none of them not even Mister Handy (and I just took note of it now after I got curious since they are the only robots that have a fucking melee weapon installed on them), and even they have it differently. Whoever designed these robots did a biiiig epic fail.--Zerginfestor 11:44, April 26, 2012 (UTC)

Emikowolf

Hey J, Was wondering if you can take a look at the screenshot DB's left on my talk page, and the link Ghost avatar's left on Emiko's. I haven't seen the log due to my current connection; but the screen shots I have seen and they suggest there might be something here a B/c should be seeing. Agent c 21:03, April 26, 2012 (UTC)

Hey J. Could you check your email real quick? --Skire (talk) 22:53, April 26, 2012 (UTC)

Chat

Hey Jspoel, I'm here doing some late-night chat monitoring and this user joined with a questionable username. Rather than ban him instantly, I've decided to report it and let an admin ('crat in your case) decide if it's inappropriate. Thanks! -- Bacon-Man Talk to me goose! 04:09, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Situation has been resolved. The user made a different account and abandoned the other one. -- Bacon-Man Talk to me goose! 04:19, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Ban GL

After trolling another wiki and then insulting other editors here, that does indeed warrant a perma ban. And like I pointed out to Limmie, it is not stated anywhere in Wikia policies -not just Nukapedia policies- that such bans for anons are not allowed. And like I also mentioned, I've seen Wikia staff and VSTF global ban IP accounts before over CC. As for banning the most recent anon, I don't see the problem with it. Sorry to say, but when an anon comes to this wiki and the first edit they decide to make is one of blatant vandalism, why should I be lax on him? 2 weeks helps make sure that they never come back. A 2 hour ban? Even a 1 or 3 day ban? That's not really deterring them, is it? Dragon Skål! 19:51, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Like I mentioned on his talk-page, I'm tired of him threatening to leave all of the time. It doesn't really leave a warm and fuzzy feeling inside after hearing it so often. Dragon Skål! 23:19, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
