Cats[]

The title of the motion picture Catz: The Mounting is a reference to the musical Cats.

Diablo[]

Devilthorn jacket, which can be found in the Bazaar Day special encounter, is a reference to the Demonspike Coat unique armor from Diablo I. Both armors have identical stats.

Dune[]

When injured below the "Severely Injured" status, super mutants may say the phrase, "Fear is the mind killer," which is derived from the quote "Litany against fear" from the sci-fi novel Dune.

The Dukes of Hazzard[]

During the Rock Falls mission, the raider bosses are called "Bo," "Daisy," "Jesse" and "Luke." These are the names of the Duke family members in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard.

Historical reenactment societies[]

The Canadian Invasion Recreationists special encounter features nervous, excited "Americans" taking a few steps over the Canadian "border," upon which they wildly celebrate victory, claiming that Canada has been overrun, and return back across the border. This is a reference to historical reenactment groups.

The Matrix ("Coppertops")[]

The Coppertops special encounter features humans as essentially, batteries fueling a robot empire, similar to the 1999 film The Matrix. However, in the game, rather than being hooked up to equipment that harvests the natural electrical impulses of their bodies, the "human batteries" are running on treadmills while a task-master robot oversees the entire operation.

Microsoft[]

During the Newton mission, the player character is required to speak with Albert Lamore, an ambassador of the Reaver Movement. During the conversation, Albert speaks of the great entity known as Satansoft. This is a reference to the technology company Microsoft.

Panasonic[]

During the Newton mission, the player character is required to speak with Tobias Peste, a scientist-priest of the Reaver Movement. During the conversation, Tobias mentions a Heaven-like paradise known as "Panasonica." The name is a reference to the electronic manufacturing company Panasonic.

Planescape: Torment[]

Morte, seen in the special encounter of the same name, is a direct reference to the character Morte, a talking skull with a New York accent from the 1999 video game Planescape: Torment. The lead designer on Planescape: Torment was Chris Avellone.

Sony[]

Tobias Peste mentions a person by the name of Saint Sony who visited him during his 11th day of fasting. The surname is a reference to the Sony corporation.

The Terminator franchise[]

  • Diesoon and the robotic arm in the Rock Falls mission are references to Miles Dyson from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • The hydraulic press in the Great Bend mission is a reference to a similar press in The Terminator.
  • The B1000 special encounter is a reference to the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • The T-800 is a reference to the robots of the same name throughout the Terminator series.
