The Fens Phantom was a Boston-based serial killer heard in the dear detective tapes, operating out of the Fens Street sewer in 2287.

Background[]

The Fens Phantom was a prolific serial killer in Boston before the Great War who was presumed to have claimed the lives of no fewer than 24 people,[1] displaying their corpses and remains in a section of the city sewers underneath the Fens, which he had claimed as a "base of operations" of sorts. This was seemingly unknown to the public, as the killer only revealed his location to a single detective, whom he gave a holotape as a clue. He proceeded to leave several more holotapes to his "dear detective" to guide them through the sewers and get to know him better.

The Phantom showed heavy frustration with societal norms. He viewed people as fake and transparent, using holotapes as a means to spread his vision to those that would listen. He voices this in his second detective holotape:

Transcript

Fens Phantom: I want you to appreciate your surroundings, detective. I can only be myself in a place like this. Life up there is exhausting. Everyday you smile at people who don't care about you one way or another because that is what you do. Down here I really get to live. I am happy to share it with you today, detective.

Notes[]

  • Each of the macabre displays is accompanied by one or more chalk X's on a nearby wall, apparently to indicate how many victims are in the associated display.
  • The Fens Phantom is one of several voice-only NPCs whose speaker NPC has a unique model. In this case, the Fens Phantom's model is the same as the model of the cut character Arnie.

Appearances[]

The Fens Phantom is mentioned only in Fallout 4.
