Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > Adminship Request - Jspoelstra

My fellow Fallout-wiki editors,

After some careful consideration, thought and a little encouragement I have decided to apply for adminship.

I've been a very active member for almost 4 months now. Probably you're familiar with my name, being online almost every day since being a member. When I just started helping out, I didn't know I would become to like it that much. I even stopped playing FNV and am still wandering about in Freeside.

I only work part-time, so potentially I have a lot of time to invest. Fortunately for the wiki, when being at home I can't resist settling down behind my PC. And before I know it, hours have gone by.

Corresponding to the amount of time I have given to the wiki, I've done a lot of work. My major contributions are:

  • Uncategorized images / nominated for deletion category: [1]. It's almost empty now, but early november the uncategorized images category contained a few thousand files; I cleared it a month later, categorizing or nominating them.
  • FNV map marker images: [2]. Added map marker images to all marked locations.
  • Fallout 3 NPC images: [3]. The first official project I got myself involved with. I have replaced almost all Fallout 3 NPC images with new, good versions.
  • FNV NPC images: [4]. I've done most of the images here too. Now that the bot has deleted all images that were nominated for deletion, there's a nice overview.
  • FNV playing card pages: [5]. They were a bit of a mess; I added the template and did some re-organizing. Also improved quality of the card images.
  • FNV quest pages: [6]. I have activated the unmarked quests that were still red-linked at the time (about 75%) and added a quick walkthrough. Besides that I uploaded side-quest images to those pages which did not have one.
  • FNV location pages: [7]. I also spent quite some time uploading good quality location images.
  • Made suggestions for featured article and -images for the Fallout: New Vegas main portal: [8]. About 20 article suggestions were used by Porter and almost all suggested images.
  • Updated infoboxes and navboxes.

Well, these are my major contributions. As you can see, my main interest goes out to working with images. I've invested a lot of time, love and care ensuring that they're of good quality. All of the outdoor images were taken around noon so as to get a clear shot (with no shadows) for the infobox. I've taken images of the characters residing indoors as much as I could in their original location, tweaking the image a little bit when in a dark environment. I also used the prescribed ratios for the images. All these measures will save us an overhaul in the future.

Now as to get to why I would be a worthy and useful addition to the list of admins. Firstly, I think as a normal user you already have a lot of freedom and can get quite some work done being just that.

Mainly I'm missing one extra option which I would like to have, and that's deletion rights. After clearing the uncategorized image category in december I have kept it empty, updating it every day. I (together with GhostAvatar) am responsible for the deletion backlog. Would I become an admin, deletion backlogs should be a thing of the past, since I would be able to delete nominated images myself and I clearly don't shun that kind of administrative work. Besides that, I've just demonstrated I can be trusted with the rights, since by now I nominated more than 3000 files for deletion; about 5 have returned to me and even those weren't of good quality. It would also take some strain of the other admins, who I think would rather spend their time on other things than deleting some bad images. In short, I really can help out with maintenance (even more), which is a requirement for applying.

Furthermore, given the amount of time I spend here, I have a good chance of detecting (mostly anonymous) users who don't have the best interest of the wiki at heart. Although I have to say that won't be my favorite task, rather focusing on my own work.

But all in all, approaching it the positive way, enough reason for me to apply. I think I could be a worthy addition.

My edit count (should be 16,000+, but who's counting):

There should have been a list of this user's edit counts here, but the edit counts feature is no longer available.
