Discussion[edit source]

What do you think of making the article area fixed width, like e.g. at Red Dead Wiki? It obviously has both advantages and disadvantages. Ausir(talk) 10:05, May 2, 2010 (UTC)

Well, layout-wise a fixed width is easier to work with as you can rely on the site looking the same for everybody. It makes formatting tables and templates quite a bit easier, and it prevents the "distortion" you get when using percentage widths in combination with widescreen resolutions. On the other hand, when it comes to text it obviously has the disadvantage that people with higher screen resolutions can't really make use of it, resulting in them having to scroll more than necessary.
Switching to a fixed width shouldn't cause many follow-up problems; I designed the portals and templates so they work on a minimum resolution of 1024*768 without looking weird. A few of our more table-heavy articles might need some reformatting afterwards though.
Personally, I'd be slightly in favour of having a fixed width. I guess we should hear the community's opinion on it though. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:37, May 2, 2010 (UTC)
I'm in favour. We are already using it at the C&C Wiki and it makes formatting real easy and reading also becomes easier, as there's less horizontal eye movement and mousewheels are cheap and plentiful. Tagaziel (call!) 17:30, May 2, 2010 (UTC)
It does look better and seems more efficient in formatting, but, like porter said, we should hear what the community thinks first. Shadowrunner56 18:23, May 2, 2010 (UTC)

I don't really like fixed width. I actually find it annoying sometimes. I have an idea...What if you leave full-width as the default width but allow users to change it to fixed-width? So then everyone can have fun. Insane! 03:55, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

If we go for a fixed width, I'll post instructions how a user can remove it for himself/herself if desired. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:34, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

Poll[edit source]

Poll finished on June 18, 2010.
A consensus must be reached by voting before any action is taken.

Let's have a poll then - currently this isn't going anywhere. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:09, June 11, 2010 (UTC)

Fixed width for all pages[edit source]

Fixed width only for portals & main page[edit source]

No fixed width[edit source]

Poll result[edit source]

Since the majority supports having a fixed width for all pages, this is going to be implemented within the next week. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:01, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Would you not do that? Even if you don't like it, you still shouldn't complain overmuch about it. Nitty Tok. 13:24, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Implemented[edit source]

The wiki has now a fixed-width layout - if you run into any issues, please let me know.

If you want to turn off the fixed width for yourself, simply add the following to Special:MyPage/monaco.css:

/* Undo fixed width */
.monaco_shrinkwrap {
   width: auto !important;

Cheers, Porter. Spoon Say Hi! 13:23, June 23, 2010 (UTC)
I agree. It's a good idea to let us turn it off. Thanks! :D Nitty Tok. 13:25, June 23, 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Just be aware that when working with tables, setups which look fine on higher resolutions may look "overcrowded" with the fixed width. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:48, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

I removed the fixed width and now when i go to peoples user pages, their edit number doesn't come up in the corner. Why? Tezzla blah blah blah 15:18, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

The removal of the large editcount isn't tied to the fixed width. There's another editcount in the masthead, the large one is largely for ego purposes anyway. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:47, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

I think we need an easy way of changing it without complex methods of modifing the values of the page instead i suggest an option for all users in a new page option section and be able to change it there instead Sgt wikia 16:44, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

This is as easy as it'll get I'm afraid. Modifying the user preferences is outside of what we can do. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:47, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Contact Wikia and get them to do the preferences thing. Tezzla blah blah blah 17:49, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

Cool. I didn't have an opinion on the matter, but now that it's implemented I switched to non-fixed. Thanks for giving us that code :) Metalspork (word vomit) 21:35, June 23, 2010 (UTC)

I've had to update the CSS for the fixed width today due to the old method causing some issues when the browser window was resized. The old code to reset the fixed width should work still (even if most of it is no longer necessary), but if you're running into issues, you can simply use the updated code above. -- Porter21 (talk) 04:09, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
