John Carmack is a game programmer, and the co-founder of id Software, a pioneer of the video game industry with titles such as Doom and Quake. Id Software was later purchased by ZeniMax Media, and he remained the studio head until November 2013.[1]

He was also the CTO of Oculus Rift, a project to bring VR headsets to the masses, later leaving Id to focus on this full-time.[2] Zenimax and id Software filed suit against Carmack in 2016 alleging amongst other claims that he had stolen Zenimax owned code and tools when he moved to Oculus, and that he had breached the non compete clause of his employment contract by recruiting id and Zenimax employees for Oculus.[3]

John Carmack was, during early development, linked to a proposed Fallout game for the iPhone, which was released on iOS and Android devices in 2015 as Fallout Shelter. It later expanded to other consoles.
