Secret Skill Book

Tulip

Tulip, the ghoul you need to find

ParadiseLost

The Paradise Lost book looks like lying congressional style but isn't

In Fallout, while in Underworld, you may acquire a book that raises speech that is not the Lying Congressional Style. If you go in and without going up the stairs, go forward and take the first left, there is a woman in a shop. Her name is tulip and if you talk to her about what she knows about the museum, she will give you a special book called Paradise Lost. When dropped, it looks like lying congressional style. When read, it raises your speech skill.

Kick Start Your Character

In Fallout, I have come up with a way to quickly level up your character and amass a large sum of caps in the first 45 minutes of gameplay. I did this as a speed run in 30 minutes and ended up at lvl 4.5 and had around 2000 caps. You may be warned that you may lose a considerable amount of karma doing this though. You may also want to save before talking to anyone as most people you will be talking to have speech challenges. You start out and when you tag your skills, tag repair, speech, and any other skill. Now when escaping the vault, kill everyone you see. kill butch, his mom, the overseer, the 2 guards guarding a door that have 10mm pistols, the 2 guards that come when opening vault 101, every single thing you can kill. Also, collect all scrap metal you find. you should then level up immediately following your escape. put enough skill points on explosives to make it at least 25, put the rest on speech. make your perk swift learner. you will then get 200xp for completing the Escape! quest. now, head forward into springvale and find the small ranch. go inside and tell her to calm down... who the hell is moriarty. convince her to give you the caps then kill her. take her ammo and everything of value in her house. then exit and find springvale school. once found, head to megaton. convince lucas to give you 500 caps for disarming the bomb. disarm the bomb and talk to lucas. you will then lvl up again. put your points on speech and something else. after that, go to the water processing plant and tell him you'll fix the leaks. fix the leaks and talk to walter again. then sell him all of your scrap metal. next, go to the clinic and save before you talk to doc church. ask him about people in the town and convince him to tell you about leo stahl. head over to the brass lantern and save before you talk to leo. tell him you know about his problem and he's hurting his family. he will give you a key. then go into the back room with a terminal. go into sneak and do the very easy terminal and unlock the floor safe. take the 300 caps and head back to the water processing plant. go to the desk in the back and take everything from the locked desk by using leo's key. you will then go to Moriarty's Saloon. talk to Gob and complete the speech challenge. go to moriarty and do the speech challenge. after, go to the Craterside Supply and talk to moira. sell her everything that's not essential. so keep your armored vault 101 suit, your weapon, your stimpaks, and all the essentials. you may need to buy something from her so the transaction will be possible. then tell her you will get irradiated and stand next to the bomb so you get +2 rads. start drinking the water next to the bomb until you get 600 rads. head back up to her and then sell the rad-x she gives you. This all sounds complicated but is really very simple. hope this is useful for you!!!!!

Alternative Kick Start:

The strategy above requires repeatedly saving and reloading to win low-percentage Speech challenges, which is boring. It also involves taking on Negatve Karma and emphasizing Barter and Speech, which may not be the best skills to emphasize in the long run. Following is an alternative strategy:

I started with just 1 in Endurance and Charisma, and 8 in everything else in SPECIAL. I have never put a single Level-Up point into Barter, Big Guns, Medicine, Melee Weapons, Speech, or Unarmed. Yet I've consistently had more loot than I could sell, so Bartering and Speech schools are moot.

I am currently on Level 14 of my 5th run-through (finished Wasteland Guide but haven't gotten to the Museum of Technology in the main Quest yet). I have 15,000 caps, at LEAST another 15,000 in loot stored in Megaton which nobody has the money to buy, 125 Stimpaks, a half-dozen Stealth Boys, and huge amounts of all kinds of ammo.

Character Creation

Assassin Class
Tag Skills:
-Sneak
-Small Guns
-Repair or Speech
Tips: Upon exiting the vault, go to Megaton and enter Moriarty's Saloon. Talk to Mister Burke and tell him that you will not help him. Go to Lucas Simms and report Mister Burke. Follow Lucas to Moriarty's and wait until Mister Burke shoots him. Immediately after, shoot or hit Burke until he dies. If shooting, make sure EVERY shot hits him. Take his silenced 10mm. You can't assassinate anyone you want but it's cool looking and a good addition for an assassin. Next, go to Moira Brown at Craterside Supply and tell her you'll do mines. Go to minefield and kill Arkansas. Take his sniper rifle. This weapon is also a cool addition for an assassin character.

  • Note, killing Arkansas may interfere with the Strictly Business quest. it is recommended that you complete that quest, or attempt to disarm him by hitting his rifle in VATS. His rifle usually comes in very poor condition (unless you have already taken his original rifle from him, then he may get a new one that usually come broken), so you may be better off just finding one elsewhere. Another note to mention is that if you disarm him, he may follow you into the mine field, and this could cause him to die.

Smooth Talker Class
Tag Skills:
-Speech
-Barter
-Melee
Tips: Follow my Kick Start Your Character but instead, just do the speech challenges. Also, when doing the Stealing Independence quest, get Button's Wig on his dresser. It can really enhance some talking skills.

Pacifist Class
Tag Skills:
-Lockpick
-Science
-Speech
Tips: For a challenge, try not to fight AT ALL. Button's Wig may be helpful as mentioned above along with a science lab coat like the one Jonas's dead body has on it.

  • careful what you say to the outcasts if you meet them at Fort Independence, this could really limit your chances of doing this, and to make it through the main quest, you may have to kill someone if you fail a speech challenge near the end, save first.

Brute Class
Tag Skills:
-Big Guns
-Medicine
-Repair
Tips: Head north of Big Town to the church building and there should be a Super Mutant with a Minigun. You can also go the the GNR and get the Fat Man from the dead Brotherhood of Steel Guy. Also, get through the main quest until you get Power Armor Training. Then, do the You Gotta Shoot 'Em in the Head quest but instead of giving Mr. Crowley the keys, go to Fort Constantine and get the T51-B Power Armor.

  • Recommend the new DLC, Operation: Anchorage if you plan on using the T51-B as your main backbone, simply due to the fact you also get many other weapons great for this class as well as a nearly unbreakable set of T51-B Winterized armor in addition to the armor you may receive in addition to the original quest.

Intellect Class
Tag Skills:
-Science
-Energy Weapons
-Repair
Tips: Go to Rivet City and start The Replicated Man quest. Find Pinkerton in the Broken Bow and tell Harkness that he's an android and that his secret is safe with you. He will give you an extremely powerful plasma rifle. Also, go to Canterbury Commons and start The Superhuman Gambit. Kill the AntAgonizer and take the armor to The Mechanist. Give him the armor and he will give you a laser pistol called Protectron's Gaze. It is more powerful and shoots a shotgun-like burst while still only using one cell. The science lab coat or Enclave armor (Correction - Tesla armor) that enhances either Science or Energy Weapons may be helpful.

Pyromaniac Class
Tag Skills:
-Explosives
-Repair
-Big Guns
Tips: In the beginning, talk to Moira Brown and do the Minefield along with the optional. Get the Bottlecap Mine Schematics. Find Doc Hoff the caravan guy and buy the Nuka-Grenade Schematics. Collect ALL items you see that could be used to make these weapons. When the level comes, get the Pyromaniac perk so your Nuka-Grenade will do a ton more damage. Also, use your Big Guns skill to use the Flamer. The Pyromaniac perk will also increase Flamer damage. No armor suggestions.

  • Don't hand over the 60 Nuka-Cola Quantum to Sierra Petrovita in the quest The Nuka-Cola Challenge if you plan on making any money or using the Nuka-Grenade as a major weapon, you give up too many nuka-cola quantum for the third schematic to be worth it, stick with just two of them.

Inventor Class
Tag Skills:
-Repair
-Small Guns
-Explosives
Tips: From the very start of the game, collect EVERYTHING you find that could be used to build something. After a while, stock your items in the locker right next to your Megaton house door right inside. The first thing you buy for your house should be the Workbench. You may also want to collect Darts and Railroad Spikes for ammo. Also, the Explosives and Small Guns skills are used for the weapons you will create. A RobCo Jumpsuit or Red Racer Jumpsuit could help with building.

Recommended S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats

This will hopefully help you through the game. Depending on your playing style, you may want to vary a little from the mold, but for the most part this will work for almost any character.

Strength - 4 *can work up using perks

Perception - 5 *can also work up using perks, especially from Those! quest

Endurance - 6

Charisma - 5

Intelligence - 9

Agility - 6

Luck - 5

Intelligence is highly recommended because it determines how many skill points you receive each level up. It is worth maxing out; the reason you should set it at 9 is because there is a Bobblehead that will increase your intelligence to 10. If you are going for the Animal Friend perk, then you should search for the Charisma Bobblehead to boost it to 6.

It is also a smart strategy to increase your S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats even further by gaining the Intense Training perk several times while leveling up your character.

NOTE: The reason you should start out strength to low is because it is the easiest S.P.E.C.I.A.L stat to raise. Some ways to raise it would be the Ant Might perk (obatained through Those!) and through armor. [Not necessarily. By taking Ant Might, you give up Ant Perception, which is extremely valuable. Also, strength increases associated with armor normally are used up just offsetting the extra weight of the armor.]

Alternatively, you could try and play the game normally, and within about 60 hours of gameplay, which sounds like a lot, but really isnt, you can amass a fortune as i have done. 7,000 caps, and over 40,000 in random items and possible workbench crafts, over 3 dozen Stealth Boys, about 100 Nuka-Cola Quantums, over 200 ice-cold Nuka Cola's, 200 stimpaks and more than enough armor and powerful weapons to take on the entire wasteland, including 5 fully repaired miniguns, 7 pairs of Tesla armor, and a quick trip to any shop will get you all of the weapons you could ever need, considering the Caps you would have by then. But to seriously help you out, make sure you visit your house often, clean out, keep using the My First Laboratory to get you some chems, and constantly going back to Raven Rock so that you can get the Tesla Armor they offer. One more thing i can offer you as advice is that you should Always, Repeat, Always scavenge weapons, armor, and especially Ammo and other weightless items from enemies corpses and from just random places that you can get to through simple lockpicking and hacking challenges. Another good starting tip is to start with 35 Explosives skill, so that you can disarm the bomb in megaton, because than you have a house, and you can use the other area as another trading post, specifically the main guard at tenpenny tower, as he is a wonderful source of ammunition. thats all. [Correction: Disarming the bomb can be done with 19 Explosives skill points plus the Vault 101 Jumpsuit which gives +5 Science plus a Mentat which gives +5 Intelligence.]

Comments

Thanks Stubiest! This is actually useful. I'm starting a new character on the 360 just to get the set of perks I missed for gaining certain levels at Neutral and Evil karma. MastahMatt 03:17, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Sorry...not perks but 'achievements'.
  • Edited by someone other than the original author, if you do not like the edits, then by all means, change them back. I edited nothing in the original document other than adding the name of the armor that can help raise the Energy Weapons skill in the above area.
