More Dialogue

Sorry, I fell a little behind after finishing up that group this morning. You know which dialogues I should do now? Paladin117>>iff bored; 23:45, February 3, 2014 (UTC)

I probably should've asked first, but should I have Broken Steel loaded at the same time as the base game? Since the add-on adds dialogue to existing characters, such as Three Dog. Paladin117>>iff bored; 00:40, February 4, 2014 (UTC)
Vanilla FNV should be all done now, assuming I didn't miss any. I aimed to do all the unique characters, even if they didn't have proper names (like the Freeside criers, for example). I am also back to stripping out the unused characters, as I decided to automate adding the few lines of formatting text to the files and just added a grep-style filter to pick out the matching dialogues. Will the next step in the process be the FNV DLCs? --FFIX (talk) 00:15, February 4, 2014 (UTC)

I see all these dialogue files on the RC, and I'm wondering, "Are they meant to be readable?" Is there some formatting conversion necessary? --Skire (talk) 00:44, February 4, 2014 (UTC)

  • FNV: Mostly done. Couple of pages got stuck, so I'll have to give them some time to come back to normal.
    • DLC's are on my schedule.
    • VHDNCREngineerTemplate.txt and VFortBennyCrucified.txt doesn't have any unique topics, so you could delete them both.

Wikipedia company naming and formatting

I was recently undertaking the task of altering the pre-War company articles and making them in line with Wikipedia's formatting. For example, "incorporated" or "inc" doesn't appear in page titles, only in the page itself, and it is written as "Google Inc." But I've now became stuck on Chryslus. The page now has a title which isn't correct due to the confusion over the naming. Basically, in FO2, it's called Chryslus Motors, but it's referred to as Chryslus Corporation in FO3 and since, and since dev opinions change, Corporation must be the true name.

But I can't find a clear policy on Wikipedia's rules on it, and Wikipedia's car manufacturer pages contradict each other. For example, Ford has its full name as the page title (Ford Motor Company), whilst others such as Porsche, Ferrari, and Toyota don't, so it's kind of unclear. Also, I can't figure out whether "Corporation" should appear in articles, since Wikipedia has some pages (e.g. Sony) where Corporation doesn't appear in the title. Chart problem

No dice on the chart problem so far. This issue, as Wikia said, seems to be a change in the way Chrome displays empty table rows. They collapse them. The charts with the problem all seem to be effected by this, since the browser seems to think those rows are empty (they actually have a div in them with some border added, but no actual content inside the div). Wikia's proposed solution was to add some content to the empty row. I've played with a possible fix I found at wikipedia, which did not work, and also tried to add some hidden (transparent character) content to the empty divs, which also did not work. I'm out of ideas. I would ask Theo to help, but he seems awful busy right now. I can try to run this by Wikia again, but I'm not real sure if there's a way to solve the problem, short of Chrome changing the way they display those empty rows. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 00:45, February 26, 2014 (UTC)

I think I got it. Take a look at Ring-a-Ding-Ding!#Quick_walkthrough and see if it's rendering right for you. It looks fine to me. I had to change the way we were using the templates. The old method, the browsers would allow for rows of different numbers of cells and would render fine. I changed it so the template is parsing rows of equal numbers of cells and the charts rendered fine in Chrome. Let me know and I'll start editing the pages. It's gonna be a tough nut, what with all the charts and having to comb over each for the problem rows, but it's doable.  The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:58, February 28, 2014 (UTC)
I did a number of pages and I'm certain this will work. I also update the talk page over at wikipedia with the fix for some good Karma. I'll see what I can do about giving instructions on the project pages, but this is not something that's easy to do. You have to know exactly what to do to fix it right. I'll see what we can do, but if I have to, I'll fix them all myself. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 02:41, March 1, 2014 (UTC)

RE: Light Machine Gun

Prior to removing the locations I specifically checked the policies/guidelines regarding item articles, specifically the bit to do with locations which states "Locations where this item can be found (fixed locations only, no random spawns)." to make sure that I was not making any mistakes. The locations I removed were not fixed spawns, and as such did not belong according to this guideline, which makes sense as those enemies and the duffle bags do not always have the weapon. As such including them as a location can be misleading, and again, doesn't abide by the guidelines that have been laid out. Random spawns for weapons in lockers are not listed, so why would duffle bags be an exemption? Indeed, if one looks at the location section for other weapons such as the 9mm submachine gun (Fallout: New Vegas), the locations listed are specific (with a few outliers that I'm not particularly fond of as they're random for the most part). If, for the LMG we do list all the enemies that might spawn with one, should we not do that for all weapons? If we are going to list the occasional spawn in duffle bags which means it's part of a spawn list then should we mention for other weapons that they might be found in the lockers at Jean Sky Diving? Hey J, when admins delete a page you should really wait for said admins to finish the job and delete the redlinks created themselves. It's quite annoying to spend the effort tracking and removing them only to have an edit conflict when you click the publish button...

Glad to help

I think I've just needed some thing to focus on, I've been floating around a bit recently. At least until the third person project gets going and when the FO3 dialogues eventually go up (so I can finish the disambigs) I'll have plenty to do.

As for other links, it's just something that comes naturally, I don't plan to delete them! On the subject, what about pluralized pages? I noticed you deleted "Protectrons" earlier. I've been going back and forth from letters as I've got more confident, also I've been thinking about how many of these links are put into an articles simply because they're one the first to pop up on the predictive. Any tips are still greatly appreciated. Thanks. --TribalWisdom(colour) Talk! 18:56, March 3, 2014 (UTC)

Done

Got through all the FNV and FO3 quests. I'll double check to see if anyone used the template anywhere else, but that should be the lion's share of it. I might tweak a few more, I did a lot of work re-sizing the boxes and cleaning up the code on most of them. You won't believe...

... the god damned bot is ready. Well... I'm not quite sure if it's actually ready, but it passes all unit tests. :))) Finally! Before we start, let's settle some points:

  • I added new column with line numbers, specifically meant to be used as anchors. Now we can link to every response in dialogue (e.g. DLC03Bigsley.txt#135), instead of linking to TOPIC. Let me know if you guys are OK with this?
  • You can check some examples here: Category:Fallout 3 dialogue files, log is here User:Теодорико/sandbox02. Some discards may look pretty weird, but that's how FO3 is done... I can't change that.
  • For now the bot can work only with vanilla FO3 and BS, all other DLCs are out of limits. Don't worry, we'll get them later, one DLC at the time. (Supporting multiple DLCs will over-complicate the bot even more then it is now.) I suggest to export all vanilla dialogues with BS loaded, just in case if BS changes something in them.
  • This time I will insist on complete exports. You see, my bot makes decisions based on analysis of 23+ thousands of low-level dialogue records and 48+ thousands of audio files. And believe me, there's NO easier way to get correct results. So, please don't mess with dialogues - just let the bot to do its job.

Let me know if everything is OK, or maybe you guys have any suggestions... and let's actually do some damage make something useful, already! :))) --Теодорико (talk) 07:33, March 5, 2014 (UTC)

Why? They're items, just like the armor and other things like bonesaws and such, and those aren't in italics. Why does I have to be in italics? Leea (talk) 18:02, March 12, 2014 (UTC)

Does it really have to be that way in all wikis? Was this a law ordered by Wikia itself, or someone else's idea? Leea (talk) 18:16, March 12, 2014 (UTC)

Skill books are items just like other consumables (which they are classified under in the G.E.C.K.) and should not be italicized. Just because the wiki does it does not mean we do it. Period. Leea has a point.--Kingclyde (talk) 18:26, March 12, 2014 (UTC)

Forums

I've been thinking for a while about making a few changes to the forums. First, I'm not happy that when the forum archives were implemented that they were all grouped into one single archive, not an archive for each individual forum sub. That makes it hard as heck to search old forums. Also, some time ago, I figured out a way to make "pinned" forum threads, ones that will stay at the very top of the forum list. Since both of these use a simple change in the forum category the forum is in, and that forum category is added to the forum from the forum header template, I was thinking about changing the forum header template to add support for both these features. I can make the template add a forum to the "pinned" category, or to an "archived" category for each individual sub-forum, then create a forum list on each specific sub-forum to list these.

Making the changes to the forum header template to add the categories is no big deal. Making the changes to the individual forums themselves would require adding one parameter |archived or |pinned to each. That's there the sticky part is. Since all the archived forums were moved by placing the {{Archivedforum}} template on them, replacing the old forum header template, we'd have to go back through all of the old archived forums, figure out which forum they used to belong to, and change them back with the added |archived parameter.

The benefits of making these changes are:

  • All old archived forums will be placed in the forum list at the bottom of each sub-forum that originally came from.
  • All new forums that need to archived only need to have the parameter |archived added to the exisiting forum header template to archive them.
  • We would be able to "pin" important forums to the top of the forum list in any given forum simply by adding the parameter |pinned to the existing forum header.

The downside?

  • We'll have to go back through all the archived forums, figure out which forum they used to be in and change them back including the parameter |archived. We'll flood rc with edits on old forums, but this time, those edits won't "bump" the archived forums up on the forum list.

Let me know what you think. This will take a bit of work to get done properly, so I wanted some input first. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 18:53, March 18, 2014 (UTC)

There's a couple of ways I can do it, but I was thinking of just adding the archives to the sub-forum itself. So instead of seeing a bunch of archives on the forum index, you'd see each individual sub-forum's archives on that sub-forum itself. I had already changed the forum list template to support pinned threads, I was gonna just add the archived threads the same way. They would be placed after the "active" threads. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 23:41, March 18, 2014 (UTC)
OK. I made the changes to the forum templates. Take a look at Forum:Wiki_proposals_and_applications and see if you like it. Pinned threads (when we have them) will always appear at the top of the forum list, and the link to the archive for that forum is at the bottom of the forum list. We'll create a separate forum for each archive (this will keep the old ones "hidden" a bit. All I have to do is create the other archive forums and the associated categories. Look ok? The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 00:59, March 19, 2014 (UTC)
All the changes to the forums, forum templates and new categories are done. We'll need to start moving the archived forums back to the proper categories. I will write up a forum on the DB with instructions so everyone knows how to do this correctly and hope to get some help. Be advised: there are some empty categories. Eventually, all the archived categories will be populated, but the "pinned" forum categories will not be until we "pin" some forums. Please do not delete any of these empty categories, I'd rather have them set up now and ready for content than have to remember how to set them up later on when we actually "pin" something. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 15:44, March 19, 2014 (UTC)
I can see the occasional need for pinned discussions. I've only created the pinned discussion categories for wiki discussion and proposals right now. But I can see a need for it in the Fallout 4 forums. We can pin a thread with instructions like "Please check for existing similar threads" or other rulesy kind of threads similar to what you see on other forums like BSW forums. If it turns out we don't use them, they're easy enough to get rid of. They just won't show if there's nothing in them. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 16:07, March 19, 2014 (UTC)

I noticed Madison Li's page was listed, but according to the Project Page, it's been checked off. Can I add any quotes to her page? Or is the project simply adding audio for notable quotes already there? I've got a couple in mind I think would be good (like her yelling through the intercom at Elder Lyons), and there are a couple of her audio files on quest pages (like The Waters of Life) that would go well on her page. I can't find more detailed guidelines on the project page, and I wanna make sure I'm not stepping on any toes. --Ssleon64 (talk) 19:29, March 18, 2014 (UTC)

Missing dialogue files

Hey, I noticed we had a tag team thing going on with the dialogue files. I don't know if you already knew, but several characters don't seem to have a dialogue file, at least not that I could find. I'm still relatively new here, so I don't know if that's something that's in progress, or if it was an oversight. And I don't know how to use the GECK to get all the dialogue options like that, or else I might add them myself. But anyway, here are the characters that seem to be missing a dialogue file, along with the GECK ID, in case it helps:

  • Silas (MS06Slaver01TEMPLATE)
  • Robert Joseph MacCready (MayorMacCready)
  • Harold (Harold)
  • Eulogy Jones (EulogyJones)
  • Clifford (FatherClifford)
  • Harkness (Harkness)
  • Horace Pinkerton (Pinkerton)
  • Caleb Smith (CalebSmith)
  • Gustavo (ChiefGustavo)
  • Willow (Willow)
  • Arkansas (Arkansas)
  • Edwards (Fallout 3) (DLC03RelayStatBoSCommandoCommander)

I went through the Fallout 3 characters page and added the link for all of them except the ones above. I assumed dead and hostile creatures don't have unique dialogue files, even though there are probably ways of talking to them. The one exception might be Arkansas, because he seems to have dialogue if you free him from Paradise Falls. Anyway, the dialogue files is a really cool new feature of this Wikia, so thanks for all the work you and the others have put into it. Hope my drop in the bucket helped. Later! --Ssleon64 (talk) 00:02, March 19, 2014 (UTC)

________________________________________________________

Okay, I added pages for dialogue files for everyone but 2. I think I got it working properly.. at least, they look the same as the others did before Theo worked his magic. I didn't do Edwards, because he doesn't have anything in the Dialogue box. And I didn't do Harold, because I kept having troubles with it. He apparently doesn't have an NPC file, so I tried switching to him from someone else, and it kept making my GECK crash. Maybe you can figure it out. Also, I had noticed that several other text files were still using the old format, such as the text file for Paladin Hoss. Is it just a matter of time until Theo gets to them, or do you think it would be helpful to go through those and make a list of the ones that have not been updated?--Ssleon64 (talk) 04:45, March 19, 2014 (UTC)

re: Dialogues

Hi, Js! Sorry, I've been silent for some time. I've been busy rewriting my bot... yet again.

From the beginning of this project we decided to keep only unique lines, and discard everything else. That sounded really good, but in practice, this turned out to be an overly restrictive approach. For example: Wadsworth and Godfrey — 50 % of theirs dialogues are shared between them both (yes, Godfrey says exactly the same phrases as Wadsworth.) So, jokes, drinks, haircuts and some other domestic stuff has been discarded without remorse for being non-unique. And that is wrong. Yes, it's a "generic" topics, but they are needed nonetheless. Truth to be told, this affects very limited amount of characters, but I have other concerns about filtering process:

  • Street talk (e.g. Megaton, Underworld, e.t.c conversations). I don't like it being removed — not that this is a very sophisticated content, but it gives a great deal of local flavor. IMHO, this should stay, no matter what.
  • My bot can give false positives on seemingly missing audio files due to a bug in the GECK — in some cases GECK can't calculate actual voice type and just puts MaleAdult01Default instead.

To address these issues I've made major modifications to the program and largely expanded its low-level functionality (in short: now my bot has its own built-in 69.l25. No, I'm not joking.). The job is mostly done, but I'm in the middle of a large testing cycle. After that, I'll make another run over the Category:Fallout 3 dialogue files and redo everything from the scratch. As of now, I'm going to filter out only the truly generic topics form the following quests:

  • Generic
  • GenericAdult
  • GenericFriendlyFire
  • GenericIdleChatter
  • GenericCrimeKarma
  • GenericCrimeKarmaKids
  • GenericKids
  • MS13Slaves

This should take out most of the «spam», while keeping useful topics intact. The «ban list» is a subject of change, so if you guys have any propositions — just let me know.

Concerning add-ons. Not yet. Look, I don't mind rewriting my bot for a tenth time, but I don't want you guys to do potentially useless job. So, just wait for a little bit longer, OK? And don't worry, we'll get it done, no matter what.

Sorry for the huge picture. I'm not using a mod because I'm on the xbox. What are you talking about when you say WGV and NGD both have just one book? I know they both have just one book, but I narrowed it down to either of those places because I loot two places before going back home to restock and such. When I restock, I put books on the shelves, which is why there are several more behind the larger version from my previous scavenging runs. After Paladin and I checked the Lord Death perk rate on weapon pages we found that these didn't have any perks listed or were missing ones that affected other explosive category weapons. Vault 34 Deceased NCR Trooper

I've encountered a deceased NCR Trooper outside the entrance to the cave system that eventually leads to the vault, itself. I'm wondering if he's a set spawn, considering the fact that I looted a Radiation Suit and one packet of RadAway off of him. If he is a set spawn, I'll add it to the page. Would you be willing to confirm his location? He's a short walk Northwest of the Northern Army Truck, near an upward-jutting rock. Foxi Hooves (talk) 19:35, April 2, 2014 (UTC)

Concerning Notable Loot

In the HELIOS One Solar collection tower, there's a wall safe that always contains at least three pulse grenades and three Pulse mines. According to the Wiki's Notable loot policy, this information doesn't fit any of the categories. I only ask if it's noteworthy because it's always guaranteed. Additionally, sorry for all of the unnecessary links in this post; I'm trying to practice.Foxi Hooves (talk) 07:57, April 3, 2014 (UTC)

Alright. Thanks, and will-do.Foxi Hooves (talk) 16:47, April 3, 2014 (UTC)

I know that I'm not an admin, and haven't been around very long; but you should leave a summery as to what you are adding to a page. I keeps others informed as to what has been changed or added and makes it easier for the admins to intercept incorrect edits. --TheItalianMafia (talk) 15:11, April 4, 2014 (UTC)

I can understand that you have gained a lot of trust on the wiki, but you should still be leaving summaries. It doesn't take a long time to write a quick sentence. --TheItalianMafia (talk) 15:19, April 4, 2014 (UTC)

Surprise!

Hey J. I have a pleasant surprise for you -- the featured articles list is finally complete! Recently, I've been feeling rather useless in terms of my role on the wiki. I haven't done anything significant in awhile and was considering resigning my adminship. But I realised there was a chapter I could not leave unfinished and so went ahead and pushed to bring it to completion. Please review the article selections/Distribution and let me know if any changes are necessary. I will be glad to help you implement the new rotation and make sure the entire system is running smoothly (some mass-revision is needed too). Please respond when you can so we can move this on. --Skire (talk) 01:08, April 5, 2014 (UTC)

That would be the next step, but I'm just glad the first step is done with. And yes, I fully intend to see this through to the end. --Skire (talk) 01:00, April 6, 2014 (UTC)

Ultra-Lux Radio Signal

When I first entered the Ultra-Luxe casino, I got a message saying "Ultra-Lux Radio Signal found". I found it odd, since none of the other casinos give messages stating that their radio signal was acquired, but I can't find any mention of it on the wiki. Can you check the G.E.C.K. to see what it does, or what it might have been used for?Foxi Hooves (talk) 09:10, April 5, 2014 (UTC)

Got any tasks for me? --Buddha392 (talk) 00:33, April 11, 2014 (UTC)

FA update

I've finished rewriting most of the articles that need to be rewritten for January. There are a few that I've assigned to Leon and Chad, and several that did not require rewrites as those articles were on my list anyway. It's hard work -- each new article's content needs to be written from nothing and in a fashion that would make it suitable for display on our front page. --Skire (talk) 20:32, April 13, 2014 (UTC)

Lonesome Road>Missing Warhead

Just did a run-through of Lonesome Road without detonating any warheads that weren't required to progress in the DLC. Followed the guide on the wiki and some videos, but there's one that just isn't there. The wiki, and the videos, note that there's a warhead in the Courier's Mile, near the Deathclaws, but I've spent a good thirty minutes looking the exact area where the people recording the videos shoot, and I don't even see a warhead, and my Laser Designator can't detonate anything over there. I'm at 29/30 warheads, and I saved the Courier's Mile for last, so I know this is the only one that's missing. Would you mind checking the G.E.C.K. or something else to see if there's a bug relating to this warheads spawn, or if it possibly clipped through the floor? Foxi Hooves (talk) 21:47, April 14, 2014 (UTC)

Added the information about the Ultra-Lux radio station to the casino's page. I'm right where your marker says the warhead is, and right where I've seen it in the video walkthroughs, but there's nothing there except rubble, for me.Foxi Hooves (talk) 22:48, April 14, 2014 (UTC)

Hey J, are there any active projects that I may be able to help contribute to? Leave me a message. --Buddha392 (talk) 13:25, April 15, 2014 (UTC)

Thanks J, much appreciated :) --Buddha392 (talk) 13:35, April 15, 2014 (UTC)

Chat

Can you enter chat for just a moment? I'm testing some script and need for a bureaucrat to enter the chat room. Thanks! --TwoBearsHigh-Fiving Intercom01 18:31, April 15, 2014 (UTC)
