I've been looking for these wrecks for years. Beats selling metal for scrap.— Ness regarding Skylanes Flight 1665

Ness is a treasure hunter currently operating in the Commonwealth in 2287.

Background[]

Ness hired a group of mercenaries to launch an attack on the raiders occupying the wreck of Skylanes Flight 1981, so they could sell the scrap.[1][2] After the Sole Survivor helps her clear out the raiders, it is revealed that the real reason for attacking the plane was to get access to a secret compartment in the cargo section under the cockpit. Ness had discovered that Skylanes used their passenger flights to cover up a large smuggling operation, and is in possession of the key that opens the compartment containing the smuggled wares.[3][4]

If one elects to kill her instead of helping her, the key can be looted from her corpse.

Interactions with the player character[]

This character is involved in quests.

Quests[]

Other interactions[]

  • Opening the hidden compartment before allowing Ness to open it will immediately turn her and the other mercenaries hostile and fail the quest.
  • If the secret compartment has already been opened on both flights, Ness will say that the player character has saved her time and that she will need to find another prospect, just saying "See you around" after ending dialogue.[5]

Notes[]

  • Ness carries the Skylanes cargo key, which opens both secret compartments at Skylanes Flight 1981 and Skylanes Flight 1665.
  • If the player character shoots Ness before interacting with her, she does not turn hostile and her death is not counted as a murder.

Appearances[]

Ness appears only in Fallout 4.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Xbox OneXbox One Ness might get pulled into the "Quick test cell" limbo and will become hostile with other characters in this box with her. Any non-essential NPC may be killed.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 If the player character leaves the cell during the attack on the raiders, then comes back, she will not initiate dialogue again even though the quest marker still marks her supposed location. Pickpocketing and reading Ness' lead note from her may resolve this issue, though this may not work on PC.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Ness may become hostile to any nearby settlers and provisioners, making it difficult or impossible to trigger the quest as dialogue cannot be initiated. Since Ness, settlers and provisioners are all essential, there will be no casualties, and they may go separate ways after a few minutes.[verified]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One If a companion is dismissed at a crash site, the companion may become hostile towards Ness or any of the Gunners nearby.[verified]
  • PCPC Ness may stand a few yards away from the location marker near the crash site and cannot be interacted with. It is possible to pickpocket the key to loot the cargo but no experience will be gained. No Gunners will be present.[verified]
  • PCPC If Dogmeat is a companion while on the path to Fort Hagen in the quest Reunions and finds Ness, Dogmeat will be hostile towards her.[verified]

  1. The Sole Survivor: "Yeah, I'll hear you out."
Ness: "You won't regret it. I've got a lead on a crash site. Big old jet. That much scrap could be worth a lot to the right buyer. Trouble is, some Raiders are holed up in it. Help me run them off, and I'll give you a cut of the profit."
    (Ness' dialogue)
  2. The Sole Survivor: "Who are these people?"
Ness: "Mercs I hired, same as you. I'll take all the help I can get. Now, let's get started. All right, gather 'round. Looks like we're up against ten Raiders. Five in the plane, five on patrol. Expect the others to come running once the shooting starts. Stick together, keep your heads down, and clear that plane."
    (Ness' dialogue)
  3. The Sole Survivor: "Is that a secret compartment? All right, Ness. What's really going on here?"
Ness: "Keep your voice down! All right, look. Skylanes was a smuggling operation. Near as I can tell, the whole company was in on it before the war. Used their passenger flights to cover it up. I've been looking for these wrecks for years. Beats selling metal for scrap."
    (Ness' dialogue)
  4. The Sole Survivor: "What were they smuggling?"
Ness: "Whatever they could turn a profit on. Mostly guns and chems, from what I've seen. I've already got buyers lined up. Should cover my costs and then some. Just keep it quiet, and no one gets hurt."
    (Ness' dialogue)
  5. The Sole Survivor: "Your loss."
Ness: "What? I thought I was the only one who... Of all the luck... well, you beat me to it, fair and square. Saved me some time chasing an empty plane, too. I think I'd better find another lead. See you around."
