Nuka-Cola vending machines are decorative world objects in Fallout and functional Nuka-Cola vending machines in Fallout 2.

Background[]

A simple, free-standing Nuka-Cola vending machine. The coin-operated machine would dispense a Nuka-Cola bottle down the chute, and required periodic refills of coolant to keep the contents fresh. Old machines were prone to malfunctioning and could launch it violently at the buyer instead of gently depositing the bottle. Of course, each bore advertising on its side promoting the cola.[1]

Characteristics[]

While Nuka-Cola machines are only decorative in Fallout, they are functional in Fallout 2. If the Chosen One deposits a single coin into the machine (using the "bag" icon from the drop-down menu), the Nuka-Cola machine will dispense a single bottle.

  • The machine will dispense a bottle at the Chosen One's feet if they pass a Luck roll. Otherwise the machine will violently launch a bottle at the Chosen One.[2]
  • The Chosen One will be able to dodge the flying bottle if they pass an Agility roll, with the bottle landing several hexes behind them. Otherwise, they will get hit by the bottle for 1-2 Hit Points (bypassing armor) and exclaim "Dooohhhh!".[2][3]

Each bottle costs only $1 each from a machine but is worth $3 when sold to a merchant. Since the bottles are weightless, this can be used as a slow way of making money. Each machine holds 15-30 bottles and is restocked every 1-7 weeks - including, perplexingly, those in abandoned or sealed areas.[2]
