You've got some grit, I'll give you that. Can't say that about most folks I know.— Old Longfellow

Old Longfellow is a hunter residing on the Island in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor. He is a possible companion of the Sole Survivor.

Background

A long-time native of the Island, "Old" Longfellow has enough years behind him that he can think back to previous occasions when the radioactive phenomenon known as the Fog covered the majority of the landscape as well as times when it was small enough to barely be a nuisance. Throughout all, his indomitable will and physical fitness have served him well even into his advanced age.

A seasoned hunter with a strong recollection of the region's history, from desperate struggle to prosperous hubris, Longfellow is a veritable legend to the people of Far Harbor and is known as one of the few still alive that is willing and capable of guiding a person safely through the Fog. That said, the combination of age and experience has driven Longfellow far into cynicism and he has taken to the company of the bottle, especially whiskey a bit too often in recent years.

One of the strongest reasons is Longfellow's deep distrust for the Children of Atom. In his youth, he was in a romantic relationship with a girl named Hannah and the two had planned a future together. One day, a group of Children attacked the pair at their hideaway deep within the Fog and abducted Hannah while leaving Longfellow for dead. Despite his wounds, he eventually made it back to civilization, however it took him two months to recover from his injuries and by then it was too late for Hannah. The Atomite zealots had brainwashed her and converted her to their ways. To make matters worse, Hannah was pregnant when she was abducted but by the time Longfellow found her, she had suffered a miscarriage due to her exposure to the radiation the Children worshipped, claiming it was "Atom's will" that it happened. Hannah herself later fell victim to trappers and died as well. The loss of his partner and their unborn child turned Longfellow into an embittered shell of a man from then on.

Notes

  • In his appearance in Fallout Shelter, Old Longfellow carries a unique lever-action rifle called Henrietta whereas in Far Harbor, his default weapon is an unnamed standard one.
  • Longfellow is a heavy drinker, often asking if they can stop for a drink or, when trading, ask if he can be provided with alcohol. He will even openly state that he will celebrate his death with a final toast (if the player character kills him).
  • Despite several characters remarking that repeat exposure to the Fog will drive a person insane (as is the case with Trappers), Longfellow seems to be quite sane and reasonable even after making a career of hunting and providing guidance to travelers through the Fog, though he often claims his limbs are stiff and his bones ache.
  • Longfellow openly dislikes the Children of Atom and will disapprove if the player character joins them. When talking with DiMA, when he talks about the possibility of there being peace with the Children, Longfellow openly states he would enjoy fighting them. He will dislike being peaceful towards the Children such as suggesting sparing or reasoning with Sister Gwyneth during The Heretic.
  • Upon achieving "idolized" affinity, Longfellow will reveal he always wanted a son or daughter to teach what he has learned to them.
  • He will become hostile if Far Harbor is destroyed, and may be found there battling the sea creatures.
  • He will sometimes sing the traditional Irish songs "Wild Rover," "Molly Malone," and "Jug of Punch" when idle.
  • When near a ruined ship, he may quote lines from the poems "O Captain! My Captain!" and "Sea-Fever".
  • When picking up junk items, Old Longfellow will gain affinity and he will actually commend the Sole Survivor for doing so, in direct contrast to most other companions (sans Piper, but her affinity does not raise).
  • While utilizing power armor does not negatively affect Old Longfellow's opinion of the player character as it does for Strong, he will state he is not overly fond of powered armor because "It's too damn loud to hunt in."
  • Like those of MacCready and Porter Gage, Old Longfellow's teeth are rotten.
  • When dismissed without choosing a specific settlement, Old Longfellow will return to his cabin, but he may occasionally take visits to the bar in Far Harbor.
  • If Walk in the Park is completed before meeting Old Longfellow, he has unique dialogue complimenting them for navigating the Fog alone.[1]

Notable quotes

  • "Gettin' too damn old for this runnin' around."
  • "Don't know what's more sore, my back or my feet."
  • "Bury me... with a bottle..."
  • "Damn... I can't remember if I had my bath this week or not."
  • "Whiskey's runnin' low. Better find some more, an' soon."
  • "Ha, ha, ha, have all the dam rads you want."
