Fallout Wiki

Your wiki. It is beautiful.

I was just stopping by, looking around, you know all that. And then I saw your wiki search layout. And then I saw your auto refresh function. It was glorious. I tried looking around your wiki's common.js for bits I could steal borrow indefinitely, then I realized I have no idea how to read js. If you could spare some time to give me the code for at least those two functions, it would greatly appreciated. [A|A] Annoy me here 06:19, December 13, 2013 (UTC)

. Being single-stacked (The service rifle's magazine), even an idiot can tell there's only place for ten in there.

A question

I'd like to know how to upload a music track to the wiki. I haven't the slightest idea how to do it, and I'd like some pointers. Also, is there a specific length of time that the track can be? Leea (talk) 23:13, December 21, 2013 (UTC)

Man, I have no idea what a converter is. The song's on my harddrive. The track is 5 minutes and 56 seconds. I was gonna try to upload it to SaintPain's talk page as a Christmas gift. Would that have been possible? Leea (talk) 23:39, December 21, 2013 (UTC)

Patroller Rights...

Hey J, I know I am early by days on this but I wanted to get this here now with everything going on with Nukapedia. I am asking for Patroller Rights... I know we talked about it and you said to try and give it 2 months before asking but I know (and hopefully you know and see this) that I am very reliable and active on here. I love editing and it makes part of my day. Since my "return" last month I have made 263 article edits. Albeit, some of them were minor, a lot of them were not. I have created pages, scanned for vandals, etc. I am also a very watchful eye. Since my edits usually come in the form of "monitoring the waste" (click random page or wiki activity) I can easily spot incorrect wording and grammar, validate bugs, add verification and tags, and spot the harmful vandals. I am always on top when I am here and I can assure you that I will not abruptly leave the wiki like I did in June of '13. I can see if this is a bit soon, but with the sad departure of Dead Gunner and 69.I25 we only have 6 active patrollers and only 3 of those are truly "active". I am always active and on key. I will be here when anyone needs help or I see a vandal and can hit that RollBack feature and notify an Admin or Bureaucrat. I hope you see eye to eye with this on me and give me a chance at this. But if you don't I understand and will keep trying for the most part and give my 110%. I hope you have a wonderful day and thanks for reading this. Gunslinger470/TheGunslingerReturns... I understand J. I will keep editing and everything, but I am not going to ask again for rights. As I really do want them, I don't need them. Maybe it's good not to have the hassle but since my leave I just don't know if it's right anymore. Anyways, thank you for taking time to read this and consider it. Maybe I'll be one again someday but who knows. Have a nice day/night. Gunslinger470/TheGunslingerReturns... "Some say this user used to be a Patroller..." Re: Removal of my edit on Talk:Pa's fishing aid

I did send him/her a message on their talkpage, but not everyone is aware that they get messages there. Do you really need to get involved every time I contact someone about this stuff? I literally sent this person our policy on talkpages, which explains exactly what they did wrong, and that's not good enough? If they don't know they should use talkpages for discussing an article after reading a sentence that says exactly that, then there's no helping them. 69.l25 (talk) 23:02, December 24, 2013 (UTC)

I get what you're saying; if I just remove someone's post without saying anything they'll be confused and might not want to come back. I just can't see it that way completely. Look: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Pa%27s_fishing_aid. What's the first thing you see on the talk page? If I don't put that template there, Great Mara usually does. If this user came back to the talkpage to see their post gone, a huge sign that literally says, "This is what you can and can't do" greeted them. I think a huge sign explaining things that shows up directly on a page is more useful than maybe an edit summary, which will appear in the page's history/recent activity, which is something a new user may not know about.
I've been thinking about making some sort of template that we can put on users' talkpages explaining any mistake in misusing a talkpage in further detail( -something like the {{Talkpage}} template, but for user talk pages instead.) It would save time having to individually contact someone every time they write about how this gun is really cool or about how something broke in the game when they did this or that. Does that sound good at all? 69.l25 (talk) 23:34, December 24, 2013 (UTC)

Question

Hi J. I hope you're enjoying your Christmas Day! =) I was wondering what the practice is for bureaucrat requests - to have it open for seven or fourteen days? Project

Any idea how to fix this? I really don't know how to go about editing the default layout. 69.l25 (talk) 17:00, December 29, 2013 (UTC)

Where's the page, though. I'm talking about when you start a project and click the "srtandard/default" option for a page, it automatically sets you up with "which." 69.l25 (talk) 17:16, December 29, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll try to change it now.
The difference between "which" and "that" is that you use one for restrictive clauses and one for nonrestrictive clauses (when you're not talking about people). "Which" is nonrestrictive; whatever you say after the subject applies to the subject no matter what. For example "This wiki uses projects, which can be created by any user." "Can be created by any user" is true for any project, so you use "which."
"That" is for restrictive clauses; "The project that deals with FO3 and FNV character stats is the one I came up with." Because "deals with FO3 and FNV character stats" does not apply to all projects, "that" must be used. So when you make a new project, it should be "The X Project is a project that aims to Y" because "aims to Y" does not apply to all projects; Y will change depending on the project's goal. 69.l25 (talk) 17:37, December 29, 2013 (UTC)
Where exactly can I change it? 69.l25 (talk) 17:51, December 29, 2013 (UTC)

Done! Thanks for the pointer. --FFIX (talk) 21:31, December 29, 2013 (UTC)

I've got a question about votes. On voting on something, does the number of yes or no (even neutral) votes decide what's going to pass, or does someone look over the votes later and decide based on the votes? Leea (talk) 23:13, December 29, 2013 (UTC)

Hi J. I couldn't help but snoop in on this. FW:P states, "The vote needs to run for a week at minimum and at least 10 votes are required for it to be valid; a simple majority is sufficient to pass." Although it is referring to proposals, I think it also applies to user rights requests (themselves being a type of proposal). I believe this is what you were looking for. --Skire (talk) 00:26, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Input & too much of my life story

I am honored by the respect & support you have shown me here.

  • I am indeed here quite a'bit, maybe too much. As you know, I visit Nukapedia almost daily and yes on all the blogs and forums I do have a great amount of contact with many of our members, but in the past my involvement with site politics damn near got me banned for life.
  • I give you my word, I will always do my best to support this wiki in good faith and "if need be" come to the defense of any members rights, just as I have always done in real life for the citizens of my country and to some small extent the world.

Still here is the rub: I am, to be honest, a wee bit unstable right now. My years of military service never hurt me so much as when I was "Honorably", yet against my will, separated form that life by mandatory retirement. Civilian life did not suit me very well.. After a few years of Veterans Administration hospital therapy/medication I only recently survived long enough to win my social security case, so I no longer need loose sleep to fears of becoming homeless. I can even afford a basic gym membership at a club that has a pool and this has done my mind, body and soul a world of good beyond any medical or therapeutic treatments.

Last year and a bit before but especially around the time of my 1,000 year ban, it was a very dark time for me. I am some what better but there is no quick fix.

  • The point of me boring you with my life story is: I am avoiding most all political frustrations.
  • I think it best, for now at least, I leave it to the majority of members to say how and by whom they should be guided.

* All I want is to come here and share a love of the Fallout series & maybe a laugh or two along the way.

Still I do thank you for considering my opinion valid. It dose my heart good.

Shell casings (cont.)

Yeap, you got that right. Found them by accident while making image for grenade rifle long barrel - it was like: "WTF is blocking my perfect, shiny barrel??? Oh, wait, it's a grenade!". :)

So, yeah, in Nifskope: remove the gun from the bullet (pun intended); remove NiVisController-s (we need the bullets to be visible at all times); apply 1stperson textures (if applicable); save modified mesh in ...\Data\Meshes. In GECK: make a static object from the mesh; render it in any way you want.

On the side note: Some of that ammo is really strange looking. E.g. that's how 45-70 supposed to look like in the real world: Modded 45-70.png|Modded 45-70.png, and that's how it looks like in Fallout: File:Geck Патрон кал. 45-70.png. But, well, it is as it is, we are here to publish facts, not to change them.

PS: Js, you (and everyone at every Wiki) should stop using NifSkope for rendering - even if it doesn't screw the image right away, it may render things not in the same way, as the game does. Remember that back pack from File:Fo3TP_Tribal_T45D_power_armor.png? Well, the image is still incorrect - there's a blood stain on the left sleeve, which isn't supposed to be there... Just saying...

Infoboxes

I'll remove the collapsible setting for the "Technical" section; it looked weird to have it show a block of info after two collapsed sections, but I'm fine with changing that. As for the infobox parameters, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Someone will just have to go through each chunk of the infobox template and add parameters 41-43; I don't have access, so I can't do it, but, like you said, I'm sure Gunny can take a look at it. The other option would be for me to make the changes in a sandbox and have someone with access to the template copy and paste the changes from my sandbox into the template page. It's up to you I suppose. 69.l25 (talk) 23:49, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Oh, and I've already added in all the new parameters, so we won't be dealing with any more at this point in time. 69.l25 (talk) 23:52, December 30, 2013 (UTC)
I'm just about done with the changes. I'm just going to look it over one more time. Can you copy and paste the stuff from my sandbox into the infobox template when I finish? 69.l25 (talk) 00:38, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
All you have to do is delete what's in the {{Infobox}} page and put in the data from here. If for some reason the changes don't work, then undo my changes, and we can contact Gunny. We can get this done now, but if I need to send a message to Gunny, we'd be stalling any chance of making progress with regards to fixing the infoboxes. 69.l25 (talk) 00:48, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Okay. I'll leave Gunny a message, and we'll see if we can fix this later. 69.l25 (talk) 00:54, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Hey, J, you probably already saw on 69's talk page, but we got a few kinks to work out. We'll roll back the recent infobox change and work in our sandboxes until it's perfect. Adding those few new lines won't be that big of a deal. 69's already done the lion's share of the work, but I think we got a small error to find and fix before it's ready. We'll fix it, make sure it's right and then update the templates. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 02:06, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
We've fixed the issue and went live with both infobox changes. Since the change to the infobox meta template effects all the infoboxes, let me know if you see anything wonky (I doubt there'll be any problems, I'm pretty sure the change is fine). The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 14:32, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah. That's good. All the stuff that should be visible on page load shows now. Thanks. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 14:52, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

Why did you remove the GECK race? It's an entirely different piece of data. 69.l25 (talk) 16:59, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

I didn't move race to the "Technical" section; I made a new entry called "GECK race" and left race in the "Biography" section. This way we can have something like "Asian" in the race section but "AsianOldAged" in the GECK race section. 69.l25 (talk) 17:08, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
I think we should add it back, but then we'd have to change the infobox template again. 69.l25 (talk) 17:26, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll start working on it. 69.l25 (talk) 17:38, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
It's just about ready. I'm going to test it really quickly. 69.l25 (talk) 17:54, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Okay, everything works. Just paste this into {{Infobox}}, and I'll edit the character template to include GECK race in the collapsed "Technical" section. 69.l25 (talk) 18:05, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
No problems with the infoboxes! Everything's showing up. Thanks for the help. 69.l25 (talk) 18:13, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

Hello

Hey J, just swinging by to let you know that today is the day the film pages are to be completed. I noticed someone had 'done' them, or more copy and pasted some bits and didn't follow the format of my pages at all, so I'm going to correct them all. Thankfully it gave me the motivation to polish them off. Anywho, what I came to ask is: 1. How are you? Long time no speak; how's things going? Having a good holidays? 2. Anything I've majorly missed? I'll be editing quite heavily again soon I suspect when my new PC arrives (it's been delayed another week for no reason) as I'll be able to play Tactics for the first time, and eventually will get around to getting the newer two games for PC so can give them a second comeover, though I imagine that might be a while off. 3. Did you remove any film red-links? I think there are pages missing from those I picked out for creation. At any rate, is there anyway I could maybe establish a portal when it's done? Because once I've finished, it will become the first part of the wiki that can, with current information, be considered 100percent complete and(!) the only part of the wiki to be fully referenced. Thoughts?

Talk to you tomorrow, Max will be done first. If you are about it'd be a great help if you could comb through them as they're completed - other people catch the mistakes the writer doesn't because they automatically presume they're not there. -- GOTW User | Talk 04:10, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I completely agree that they should have been done, and haven't a bad word to say for him taking it upon himself, it's more that they weren't done properly. It's unimportant now though, I've already done them yesterday(?); maybe the day before. Oh yeah, what big prize? That NOTY, yes? Congrats either way. Yes, I'll be editing again alright. I went through the film treatment one last time and identified all the pages that need to be created, so just a few more and I think I can declare the project 100 per cent complete. As for the portal, no worries, I already went off the idea myself a few days ago! Happy New Year buddy! -- GOTW User | Talk 17:20, January 2, 2014 (UTC)

Sitenotice

It worked. Switch to monobook. Sitenotice only works in monobook. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 16:45, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

Can't sitenotice only works in monobooc and is deprecated in the wikia skin. We *could* edit the text portion of MediaWiki:Communitymessages-notice-msg to send the message. It's not the same, but it's as close as we can get. Also, the front page media links are weird. The links work right on the template page and the source code looks right on the main page. We may have to send a bug report on this. We should try to transpose that template to a different page (sandbox or something) and see if it's just on the portal that it doesn't work. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 17:15, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Np. I send out a message from community messages to test it. Looks like it works fine. We can use that to send special messages if needed. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 18:05, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

Player character

Ah, sorry, okay. I'll leave them for now. User OfficialLolGuy  OfficialLolGuy  Talk  Blog  02:21, January 1, 2014 (UTC)

I agree on that, I thought "player character" didn't sound good, and when I realised it was in the policy to have "player character" my thoughts on it were exactly the same as yours, that it wouldn't look good for readability. Garoux had a good idea though, with replacing some of it with "one". User OfficialLolGuy  OfficialLolGuy  Talk  Blog  02:32, January 1, 2014 (UTC)

NifSkope & GECK & stuff

Hi, Jspoelstra! Happy New year and congratulations on becoming NotY!

  • NiVisController: NiVisController - here it is, just Ctrl+Del it and the ones-of-a-kind. (Hit the F2 key to toggle the block list, if you don't see it by default.) NifSkope ignores them, but GECK may hide some parts of the model, if the controller is present.
  • Static objects: In the GECK locate any static object (Object Window - World objects - Static) > double-click it > type a new ID (I prefer "000", as it is easier to find) > Edit > Edit (again) > select a mesh > OK > OK > Yes. Done, you got a new static object, which can be used as any other game object.
  • Images: Sure, take them. I believe this has been settled, but just in case: I fully support sharing materials between Wikis. I prefer uploading to the Russian Wiki due to numerous technical troubles with the common file storage. That's it, no more, no less.
  • .308 is from "This Machine", .50 is from AMR.
  • NifSkope is not bad, it is different. Lighting, textures, specular maps, visibility, projection... if you can manage to match all of this to the way how the GECK treats it, then NifSkope is as good as GECK. ;)
  • Khan clothing: It's just a default GECK pose. True-white NPCs? Just Google for "geck custom race tutorial" - some of them are written much better than I could possibly do. Unless you are willing to learn Russian... :)))

--Теодорико (talk) 23:23, January 2, 2014 (UTC)

Hi! This one looks completely unnatural - usually, closer objects should appear larger. Guess what? You are using orthographic projection. In the name of the Atom, hit the F10 key! --Теодорико (talk) 22:42, January 3, 2014 (UTC)

By the way, I'm little bit iffy about posting 5,56 round in the Fallout 3 page - seems to me, this model is exclusive to FNV. ("That gun", varmint rifle) --Теодорико (talk) 23:32, January 3, 2014 (UTC)
A little bit speculative, but well... it's none of my business anymore. NiVisControllers are used to control visibility during animation. (e.g. grenade rifle reloading animation: empty shell comes out, whole grenade comes in. This is done via use of a NiVisController.) The game uses them, GECK uses them, NifSkope... ignores them. So, if you persist on using NifSkope... well, just forget I mentioned it. --Теодорико (talk) 00:20, January 4, 2014 (UTC)

I have tried to be Jasper's friend here and at our other fallout site but his actions speak louder than his claims of holding no grudge.

I assume as he is a chat mod he might be a friend to you. I am sorry he can't seem to find it in himself to be a friend to me.

Jspoelstra I respect the fact you looked into this matter. I understand your position at times is taxing to say the least. You have done what you can. Your job is not easy and that is exactly why even in my early days here when I was up and coming I refused the want to be mod option.

You take your position with justified pride and I do respect that. My time in the military required me to make some hard choices and even break some bonds of friendship.

Jasper continues to protest his absolute innocence. Sadly I think he even believes it. I support your wish to show an even hand. Still we all know those with rank and or position must be held most responsible. The job is a weight, a task and never to be confused with a privilege. Jasper is more than in need of a reminder to that truth.

Again I thank you for your time.

Pain

I couldn't help but notice the above message and think it's only fair I make my case; I do not have a "hate on" for Pain. He is just assuming I must have some kind of vendetta for him because I disagree with him on a number of topics (most recent of which is that you can't sell something without the rights to it). I'm not sure where his assumption that I must hate him in order to disagree with him comes from but I assure you, it is not the case. He made similar allegations during his un-chatban request and frankly I am sick of seeing "you're just doing this because you hate me" whenever I express an opinion that is different to someoneelse's; I will not be made out to be doing this out of petty hate for someone.
He's free to state his opinions on blogs and forums but that means people are free to disagree with them, if he doesn't want me to reply to his blog comments then he's free not to make them.JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 18:34, January 4, 2014 (UTC)

Achievements

As you know, I create a lot of pages, and so I've always wondered why there isn't an achievement track for that? Because there probably should be. Creating a page at the moment only counts as one edit, so there isn't much of an incentive to make content rather than just editing it. Just a thought. -- GOTW User | Talk 21:16, January 4, 2014 (UTC)

Regarding Ausir's original research as citations

As I was reading up Wikipedia's Citation Guidelines in preparation for our Citation Project, I stumbled across their "No Original Research" guideline and realized it justified action I've made previously in the guidelines of the aforementioned project.

I feel it necessary to inform you that not only do I share their discretion regarding original research as it is detailed in their article but I have also put it into practice in the one and only example of it to my knowledge without your prior consent a couple of days ago.

In retrospect I should have brought it to your attention first after Chad had brought it to my attention that you hold high regard for Ausir and his citations, but due to my feelings regarding citations and "Original research" I withhold both my stance and my edit regarding the matter as being beneficial to the state of our citations.

If you disagree and/or wish to discuss this further, message me back on my talk page so that we might discuss the issue or schedule a chat conference between whoever you feel this involves.

Thank you for reading my message and I hope to discuss this with you further --The Ever Ruler (talk) 06:34, January 12, 2014 (UTC)

His citations would hold if he were to provide documentation for them. Sadly, he expressed on Ant2242's talk page on the Vault that he cannot. [1]
He mentions recollection of two such articles bearing his self confirmations but I cannot find another one beyond the Floater one. My stance on the one I can't find, should I find it, is the same as the Floater one as of now. --The Ever Ruler (talk) 06:41, January 12, 2014 (UTC)

Redirects

Hi J. Last night I was working on some decapitalization in a few add-ons, and I'm sure renaming the articles created some redirects. Is there a way that one can see all the redirects resulting from a name change like that? It would make it easier to change the bad links over but I can't see a way to do it. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  16:36, January 13, 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, I knew there was a tool for that somewhere. As for the Fallout unmarked quests category, I was following the Fallout quests template which had all unmarked quests listed in italics. Those were the only ones I added to the unmarked quests category, as I noticed it was incomplete when trying to navigate it. I don't think I added any side quests, just the unmarked, although if some of the side quests were incorrectly noted as unmarked in the template I would've added those as well. Dialogue files

I mostly did it because they mentioned it in chat and wanted to see how hard it was. And I used excel to speed up the process, but I agree it takes too long to do it for each npc's dialogue file. Dialogues

Hi, J! Sorry for picking, but I've noticed your conversation about dialogue files. From what I've seen, it's a trivial programming task and I was going to do that for Убежище anyway. Since the codebase is independent from the dialogue language, I might as well start here and switch to Убежище lately. From my point of view, this will benefit both Wikis, and there are no points to do that separately. So, if you guys are interested let me know. --Теодорико (talk) 20:48, January 17, 2014 (UTC)

Ok, I got basic functionality up and running, so I'm ready to outline some details.
  1. This is going to work like this: 1) You guys create a page with all required markup (description, infobox, other templates, categories, e.t.c) and raw dialogue enclosed in <pre></pre>; 2)Some time later my bot comes in and rewrites raw file to something more readable. This way you can have as much contributors as you want, and I have to maintain just one copy of software. Saves time and effort. Plus, having raw file means ability to redo the whole thing from the scratch if we'll ever need it.
  2. We need to discuss many technical details: naming/placing of dlg pages, page layout, infobox, managing template for my bot, table layout and contents (e.g. if we are keeping only unique topics), e.t.c. Plus, we need to rally all interested contributors and give them instructions. So, maybe you are willing to setup an official project, so we can use it's talk page for discussions?
  3. FNV is my personal priority, as we already have FO3 dialogues at Убежище. So, if you don't mind, I prefer to start from FNV and switch to Fo3 later.

I expected that to be the case. It only happens on rows that don't contain any content. If I recall correctly, that template is written in wikimarkup, not html. In order to insert the empty tags, I would probably have to completely rewrite all of the 60 or so chart templates using html. I'll look at them and see what I can do. It's possible to do a workaround, adding a single character in one of those cells and making that character transparent. Open User:Agent_c/SunnyTest1 in a mobile browser. I've used the transclusion code to include most of the article, but cut out most of the templates, cut out a large chunk of the infobox, and some content thats nice to have, but probably not useful on a mobile phone (like the quotes) but only the main article needs to be edited to update both. Admittedly its not a great solution - it would require a parallel set of content and links... but might be something we can talk to the wikia guys to see if they can see other ways to maybe shift people to the right data set. Agent c (talk) 19:19, January 21, 2014 (UTC)
I've just had a look and excluded the infobox entirely for the result. It looks terrible with it. We would need a special mobile infobox template. Not sure if we can embed code in the main infobox in the main infobox... I have a feeling we probably can. Gunna play with that a bit as an experiment. Agent c (talk) 19:32, January 21, 2014 (UTC)

We did discuss it, albeit not with an admin or bc present. I don't think it's radical enough of a change to be discussed, really, considering the italicization is following proper grammatical conventions. In English, all ship names are capitalized in all instances. I write history, and if a ship name appears in a title of a paper, it's italicized. I'll defer to your judgement, but again, it is proper grammar after all. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  18:42, January 24, 2014 (UTC)

An update

Hi J. I've been taking some time off from work here recently because I wanted some "cool-down" time from the virulent drama I was somewhat involved in... But I wanted to let you know, I've got new recruits for the featured articles (hoping to finish that soon), and I've been helping Chad with a dialogue file catalogue. Also, on another note, could you just update the forum page on Porter so we could have formal closure? Thanks. --Skire (talk) 01:40, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

I was mainly referring to the Clyde thing though. But with Porter, I did what I believed was the right thing, which was equal and consistent enforcement of the policy. And after all, I am but one person -- if the community voted to made Porter exempt, I would've accepted the decision they made. I'm looking to close the featured articles soon (an entirely new rotation) and we'll implement that. My workload this year has been much tougher (as I'm sure you know), but I know I broke the commitment I made to finish the featured articles. I understand you're disappointed, J, and I'm sorry... --Skire (talk) 19:21, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

Templates

Not all red-links are bad. In this case, all of the links required to keep functionality are present, and the templates are running fine after a quick test last night. So if you feel that any red-links left (which were red-links at the Tardis wiki as well) are inappropriate, although they shouldn't be, feel free to remove the linkages.

We don't need them. But at the same time, I no longer have the time to create a workaround, and everything is fine as it is. However, I didn't know about our variation of hiddencat (I've never seen it used here). I'll look into it, and if it's better, I'll go ahead and use that instead.

And just as a side-note, I did not create templates just for the sake of creating them. I made the changes which were fully supported in my Flagging Sentences forum. If you had grievances, you should have stated them there. But now, I have users that have been waiting for these changes, especially Chad and Ever with their new reference project, and so my stance is that the majority of these templates are to stay unless appropriate workarounds are found (which, honestly, aren't needed).

As for the banner, they're impossible to fix now. I managed to get the banner where it looks good on Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. If it doesn't look good on IE - I'm sorry. But I'd rather have it right on 3 browsers instead of just 1. Really wish Wikia wouldn't have screwed that up. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 18:29, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

J, as far as Leon's banner is concerned (you had the same problem on my talkpage), do you have a particularly wide monitor? My monitor is really wide and it causes the banners to mess up like that. It may not be your browser. Toci US Air Force Into the wild blue yonder... 18:50, January 26, 2014 (UTC)
It's all about monitor width. This happened when we went to fluid. The right margin of the article space is no longer anchored, so you can't use either fixed or relative positioning to place the right background image. I tried to no avail to fix mine and ended up just deleting it. You can't get the z-index to place images behind the article space because of the way the page is built with the wikia software. The only fix that I can think of for this would be to allow users to add custom background images on the site's css (or a subpage and import them to the main). I'm not sure if we want to do this, as it will have to load with the main css on every page. So yeah, they're broke, and I can't find a fix. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 18:59, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

Update template link

Hey, J. I saw you changed the namespace of the link in that template to point to the template talk namespace. I was under the belief that the notice should point to the article talk page for the article the template is placed on. The template talk space is not going to work for that. Was there some issue with the pointing? We are using this on articles, right? If it's used on templates, too, then we'll have to add a check for the namespace for that link. Let me know what the issue was, can you? The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 18:30, January 26, 2014 (UTC)

I think I see what you were trying to fix now, after reading the above comment. The question I have is why was the {{Mbox}} template not used to create these new templates? Its a good image, but its misnamed. It was described as Broken Hills Underground, which is a different location - not the mine. Broken Hills underground is a sewer location. Agent c (talk) 14:12, January 27, 2014 (UTC)

Category Question

Hey J. As our resident edit expert I just had a quick question I was wondering if you'd be able to clear up for me. Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but are overreaching categories such as Category:Fallout 3 characters (or any other game character category actually) suppose to only have the specific categories within it, and not actually suppose to have individual pages within it? If you're confused on my meaning, take a look at the Category:Artists and animators. That acts as the overreaching category, containing none of the specific pages themselves. Isn't everything suppose to be organized this why? Anyways, depending on the answer to that question, it leads to my next question. What should be done to fix this (if it does turn out to be incorrect)? Now before anyone suggests we just run a bot through and delete all the overreaching categories from the pages, I feel this would lead to more problems as we don't know if those pages have both an over reaching category and a specific category, and deleting the overreaching category would just delete the list we need to check. So without a doubt I feel this is an issue that we need some good old manual editing for. But the question stands, is this an issue a project would fix best or would it be best just to grab some users, explain the situation and get to it. Anyways, I hope we can figure this out. Look forward to your reply J. --The Old World Relics (talk/blog/contributions) 19:30, January 27, 2014 (UTC)

Yea I was hoping to hold off until you got back to me, but I noticed Toci was already going through some so I decided to help. I see why the overreaching categories are present now. All good, I'm sure me and Toci can set things straight in no time. Thanks for getting back to me J, and happy editing! --The Old World Relics (talk/blog/contributions) 19:27, January 28, 2014 (UTC)
I just check it on my mobile and it still works fine. When you click the Fallout: New Vegas character link instead of listing every character in the game (being very messy) it brings you to a list of all the specific category links, making it much more organized. All the characters are still there, just under their specific category. Thankfully I think we're all good there. --The Old World Relics (talk/blog/contributions) 20:02, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Clicking the FNV character link in the first image takes you to the second and third images. Takes you to the sub-categories. Very originized instead of a mass list in my opinion. --The Old World Relics (talk/blog/contributions) 20:15, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Ok now something odd is happening. It seems that on the wiki the characters are split into their subcategories, well now on the game guide app it's showing all characters as you intended? Did you do something because this seems like what both of us want. See screenshot:

Removed bug entry (Survivalist)

Hey there, not sure who else to ask: Do you know why my bug was removed from Bugs section on this page? I think it's useful information and didn't get any response on the Talk page. Thanks :) http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Survivalist --Sduibek Gametitle-FO1 19:58, January 27, 2014 (UTC)

Hey J, you around? We've got an anon changing all the videos on the FO3 soundtrack page to his own videos of the same thing. Broc has asked him to stop and he keeps doing it. Wondering if you could take a look at it, thanks. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  20:53, January 27, 2014 (UTC)

Red links

Was to prevent the images from popping up on the "recent acitivities" and drawing too much attention to it, yet i kept the rest of the fomat so all would be easier to replace with new ones. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 17:39, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Soundfile

Would you mind deleting :File:FO3_LeroyWalker_ThoseDamnAbolitionists.ogg|that file for me? I mistook it for Leroy Walker's dialogue bit for the Emancipation Proclamation but luckily caught it before I actually finished the edit to the page. It actually pertains to the Civil War draft poster but I found another bit that works better for that page so I don't really want to put it there either. Sorry about that. --FFIX (talk) 20:26, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Redlinks and chatbot

What the heck. It did that last night, too, and I fixed all the links. Something must be clipping the file names. I'll look at it again. Wonder what's going on?

On another note, the chat bot is back up. As a related note to that, I do want to mention that I'd seen a number of people using the chat logs in a way I never intended them, and in a way I will never support. That is using them to essentially spy on what's said in chat. There was even someone off wiki who was spying in on chat by using them. When I created that tool, it was with the intent that it would help us moderate chat and give us a tool to easily provide logs when our moderators need to act on the rules. I was clear that it was not intended as a tool to go through the logs and retroactively sanction users when mods weren't active. I also refuse to see it used to spy on chat. If this continues, I will either change the way it logs so it writes the logs offsite (which I now have the capability to do), or I will simply cease using it. I'm letting you guys know publicly so my intentions are clear to everyone. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:37, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Categories

I can't speak for GGC, but if categories are the only way that someone can find a character, then why do we have the Fallout: New Vegas characters page? I will wait until you've gotten back to me before starting Fallout 3, but pages should be in the lowest category possible. Equidae

That's what redirects are for.

Horses and donkeys are roughly the same thing, same subject, and cover the exact same things and information as each other. They're both fairly tiny and aren't really worth being separate. World War II page

Is the World War II page fine as it is, or should it be expanded a bit with basic information about the war? Or should some extra focus be added on the use and testing of nuclear bombs? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 22:05, January 30, 2014 (UTC)

Dialogues

Hi Js! I've made some progress with programming and finally I'm more or less happy with results. Guess, you have already seen it, but just in case... User:Теодорико/sandbox01. There are some differences from your sandbox, so lets take a look at it, column by column:

  • CATEGORY - I've used it to break dialogue in to sections. Saves some space and makes things little bit more readable, IMHO.
  • QUEST ID - I've dropped it, because it has no real value outside of the GECK. Again, IMHO.
  • TOPIC - I'm thinking about adding HTML anchors to it, so it could be used for linking (e.g. [[VMS38RedLucy.txt#VMS38VMS38RedLucyTopic403|......]])
  • TOPIC TEXT / PROMPT - I've combined them, because prompt always supersedes topic text - absolutely no point in keeping them both.
  • RESPONSE TEXT / NOTES - Again, combined them. RESPONSE TEXT usually contains some notes ({in curved brackets}) anyway, so adding some more NOTES to its end doesn't change anything.
  • FILENAME - Useless without of VOICETYPE. And you'll have to give me some good reasons to put something like "MaleUniqueBenny\VCG00_VCG00OpeningSequence_00107225_1.mp3ogg" in to the table. Why do you need them anyway?

If you would like to change anything - just let me know, everything is pretty much doable. And one more question: Are we going to keep topics which aren't specific to the given NPC?

On a completely different topic: What about Fallout 2 Restoration Project? Is it accepted by Nukapedia? I'm asking on behalf of our editors, who have found few cases of RP content being used in main-space articles:

--Теодорико (talk) 19:04, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

  • anchors - OK, I'll make a template for that - should save a couple of KBytes... You already have {{Linkable}}
  • EMOTION - OK.
  • FILENAME - I have an idea...
  • unspecific NPC topics - Check the NPCID column, if it contains "--" or "Lucky38Marilyn" then this topic could be used by a whole bunch of NPCs. e.g. "I'm hit!", "You can't hide from me.", "Grenade!", "Thief!", e.t.c. Not a very sophisticated stuff, but gives some details about the character.
  • FNV dialogue files - Please stick to the complete export - my bot is programmed to take all the trash, so it's better to let him do his work.
  • RP - sure, we are in no hurry.

--Теодорико (talk) 20:49, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

UPDATE:
  • Anchors - What's this place? .
  • EMOTION - Done.
  • Filenames - I've put them in corresponding RESPONSE TEXT cells, but they are commented out with <!-- -->. Not quite sure if it's OK to keep such amount of hypothetical trash... I'll leave this decision to you. ;)

Chryslus Building

Hey Js, someone added: "South of the entrance, mole rats spawn in a destroyed building across the street, a random wastelander can be seen traveling through here from time to time. Saving the wastelander from the mole rats and he/she will reward you with caps." to the page. That sounds a lot like a random encounter, could you please check the GECK to see if this is a fixed spawning point or a RE?

Notable loot oddity

Could you take a look at the Notable loot section on The Courier's Mile and see if it looks wrong to you? In particular, on my computer, the more/less prompt to expand/contract the list is appearing several lines down into the following section. I have looked at it in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and IE and it happens in all of them. One difference is that Chrome and Firefox have the cookie set to log me in automatically while Opera and IE do not, and when I am not logged in, the prompt appears a few lines further down. Also, I pulled up Megaton and Nellis Air Force Base as comparisons and they don't seem to have the problem. Unless I am overlooking something, I can't see anything done differently in The Courier's Mile's article that would make it behave this way. I would assume that since it happened in different browsers that it isn't just a problem on my computer but wanted to make sure someone else could see it. --FFIX (talk) 16:09, February 2, 2014 (UTC)

Yeah. It's not a browser issue. For some reason that page is throwing the mw-collapse text down the page. I'll see if I can figure out why. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 17:08, February 2, 2014 (UTC)
