Working with templates is easy - re Trait Requirements

When you're working with a template, for example the {{infobox trait}} template, and you're not sure what the parameter name is, you can preview the page (which you should be doing anyway) and, somewhere on the preview page, you'll find the list of templates used in the preview. You can click on the name of any template and see the documentation for it. It is by this method that I was able to find that the requirements parameters are called "require1" through "require10". Since the template was set up for game1, I added require1 to the parameters and added the text describing the requirements. Not many people know this, but if you remember it, it will make you that much more valuable as an editor. --Kris User Hola 11:31, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the FYI Kris. Richie9999 10:36, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • Huh, I figured I couldn't edit anything. Guess I was wrong. Oh well time to be away before someone thinks I'm circumventing a ban. Am I? I don't know. It is my talk page for whatever thats worth. ENought rambling. sleepy time now. Richie9999 10:38, August 9, 2011 (UTC)
Editing your own talk page while blocked does not constitute circumventing a ban; it's a setting that can be turned on or off (on by default) by whichever admin blocks you (and any admin can later come along and change that setting). It's rarely turned off, but most people don't know about it. --Kris User Hola 11:40, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

Disclaimer

I am not a sock puppet nor have I ever been one but there is a distinct possibility that multiple accounts may use the ip that is available at my college of Miami University, where there are about 20,000 students or so. There's probably at least one other person there who uses the vault. Dunno. Crazy Sam said I should mention this on my talk page. The IP I'm using right now is my home ip, that is the one from my home where I stay over the summer. Richie9999 20:37, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

Jury Rigging note.

Hello Richie.

Why are you removing this info from the weapon pages? True, it's in the info box, but so is almost all the other information on the page. If you take it all out, all that will remain will be "This is a gun. Look in the box. Go here to get it."

What is your overall reasoning for this?

All the best, --FourWayDiablo(talk) 13:57, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

I get it, but it seems a bit too much to me. I only noticed it due to your back-and-forth with the anon. Was wondering what was going on.
You might also want to nuke that .357 "With a weapon skill of 100..." note as well. That would also seem redundant with your reasoning. If you take Psycho it does more damage, if you change ammo it also does more damage, etc.
All the best, --FourWayDiablo(talk) 14:14, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

Banned?

Banned from a Wiki for making legit edits? Seems a bit pointless to ban someone who is doing constructive edits if you ask me, and if the Admins wish to ban a member of this Wiki who's edits are beneficial I don't wish to be a part of it anyway. RoccoFinesse 05:23, October 29, 2011 (UTC)

I just edit the pages as I read them. I re-read them after I edit, and sometimes I see more mistakes. I'm also multitasking 3 other sites at the same time, not to mention this site likes to go down ALL THE TIME for me, and I will be damned if I edit one of those long-ass pages in full and i won't save my edits. RoccoFinesse 05:35, October 29, 2011 (UTC)

It scored a critical hit and didn't kill it outright, then all of a sudden the monster burst into a fiery plume and died, when nowhere near 1/10 of it's hp lost. Sorry if I removed the crit effect, that must of been an accident.

Interwiki links

Can I ask why you are reverting my edits? I was merely adding interwiki links so that people can gain more information on the subject matter being discussed. This is usually seen as a better idea than linking to iMDB or to Wikipedia as Wikia-based wikis tend to provide more information on the subjects. —Jaymach Ral'Tir (talk) 02:25, November 10, 2011 (UTC)

Seems like an odd choice considering this is a fan wiki as well, and is based on Wikia which contains links to other wikis at the bottom of every page anyway. Wouldn't it make more sense to link to a specialised wiki where more information is available than to Wikipedia, which only offers a very small amount of information on In-Universe articles? —Jaymach Ral'Tir (talk) 02:34, November 10, 2011 (UTC)

Notable loot

That's the problem: the notable loot guidelines were drawn up sometime after the release of Fallout 3 by an arbitrary user and the content wasn't exactly discussed in depth, so there isn't much of a dividing line about what's notable and what's not. I personally would say that skill magazines are notable. --Kastera (talk) 04:31, November 14, 2011 (UTC)

Bad edit on Violet?

Hi, could you explain to me why my edit on Violet was bad? It was more concise and avoided repetition of words ('and' and 'will'). I'll be waiting for a response okay? Limmiegirl 04:57, November 16, 2011 (UTC)

I disagree. If anything the old version, being wordier and uninterrupted was harder to understand. Plus the prolixity and unnecessary word repetition is outright poor writing. Would "Sometimes Violet will wake up on the wrong side of the bed and get stuck in between the trailers, unable able to shoot at you." be hard to understand? Limmiegirl 05:22, November 16, 2011 (UTC)
Lol, the 'able' was an oversight, it's just 'unable to shoot'. Adding a coma would just remove one of the offending words and does nothing for concision. Plus it's preferable to keep direct causality direct. Alright then, I'll update the corrected version. Toodles~ Limmiegirl 05:46, November 16, 2011 (UTC)

Hello, this is Caleb Roberts, you just removed my edit. All I was doing was connecting the dots. Look at the Harrison Peters page in one tab and the Patient Zero page in a different tab. I am quite certained you will find that the given information blends seamlessly together if you do so. The infected Harrison Peters did, in fact, flee from Vault 22. Not only that, there is no oral or teminal-based evidence that supports the theory that Patient Zero was a test subject of Big MT nor that of any of the Think Tanks.Caleb Roberts (talk) 03:20, January 16, 2013 (UTC)

Notable loot/skill magazines

Skill magazines are notable loot, if they were not, then that would mean all the locations that mention skill magazines in the (Notable Loot Section) would have to be deleted, I don't believe that skill magazines are not notable loot.

Proposal

Then how about we put skill magazines in the notes section on the articles to show good but not notable items found. Because, if someone wanted to look for skill magazines and decided to go on fallout.wikia to see if it had been documented, and didn't notice that it had been deleted, they would never been able to be directly notified about what they were looking for.

Uhm... There's no such classification in the GECK. Technically speaking, the Animal friend is a faction (just like NCR or Legion or any other), and you just get more friendly terms with that faction, as soon as you take the perk. Thing is, that most of fire geckos are not in this faction, that's all. In any other sense, they are "creatures", just like any other non-human character. --Theodorico (talk) 03:07, February 25, 2013 (UTC)

ADB

Hello, Richie. This is a message that I will be circulating through Nukapedia's Sysops. A while back I had created a more suitable version of the Administrators' Discussion Board as an attempt to help regulate important matters that require immediate attention from the veteran users around Nukapedia. With Fallout 4 on the horizon, I would like to begin making this feature more widely embraced, so that we all are more comfortable and familiar with using it for when the time comes around that we'll need to look towards it the most. What I would like to see is for an example to be set for where certain matters should be discussed within our community, as well as creating an environment where users will know that their issues will be addressed in a timely and fair manner. What does this mean, exactly?

  • Appropriate topics should be addressed within the ADB instead of the normal fora space. Not only is the ADB a general area to condense important topics, but it is also always kept at the top for easy access. (As well as having a place within the Community Messages.)
  • All Administrators, Moderators, Patrollers, and Bureaucrats should make it a priority to check through the ADB at least once every few days or so. This is the duty of mantling the extra tools, after all, and is not too much to ask for.
  • The ADB should make an appearance within new user's welcome message.
  • If a topic within the fora has been made that is of significant importance and affects the wiki as a whole, these topics should be moved into the ADB.
    • It is my hope that these requirements will help our community become more familiar with where they should go to have their grievances and ideas properly heard. Right now, the ADB has been largely ignored because the Sysops have also largely ignored it, and this is unacceptable at times when important matters such as this one are mostly by-passed except for a couple of people. With the chaos that is soon to come with the new title(s), all I am asking is for a bit of responsibility in making sure that we all recognize issues and ideas as they come up, and making sure that we do our parts in seeing them through. Thank you for reading, and I would greatly appreciate some feed-back. Once a general consensus has been reached, possible changes will be taken care of.

Hi,Richie! This one is REALLY weird. According to the GECK there are three drunks in the Freeside, but all of them are disabled... So, yeah, I can spawn them using console, but this is a sort of modding. You are playing on the XBOX, right? So, no mods, whatsoever. How old is your play-through, did it started prior to the latest patches? I'm asking because, possibly, they were enabled somewhere in the early versions, but had been disabled by later patches... or it's a glitch. --Theodorico (talk) 23:31, March 6, 2013 (UTC)

To my knowledge, If they were already spawned, then they are staying for good, and no amount of patches couldn't remove them. It would be great if you could check them in a more recent play-through, started after all patches. If they aren't there, then we can identify them as a cut content. --Theodorico (talk) 00:10, March 7, 2013 (UTC)

An Antique land

hi i would like to know exactly what was wrong with the edit i made on 'an antique land'...?

(Vault Kid 3 (talk) 18:22, March 12, 2013 (UTC))

Decanus Severus, Arizona Scavenger, and editor behavior

I spend a lot of time elbow deep in FNV code. When I find bugs, I report them. If they belong in a different section of the wiki, that's fine. Having them completely removed because I didn't put them in the "right article" is not productive. If an editor could take the time to remove the bugs but not to transplant them to the "correct" article then they should probably not be editing this wiki. Hence, "asshole". It may not be nice, but it's an accurate description of someone who can't take the 30 seconds required to cut-paste content from one article to another article. -- Yukichigai (talk) 06:42, March 13, 2013 (UTC)

With regards to transclusion, I am curious how you could possibly present an argument that having more information in more places is a bad thing. I'm okay with having structured organization of articles. Allowing that structure to interfere with the ability to present and obtain information is dumb. -- Yukichigai (talk) 06:50, March 13, 2013 (UTC)
"Tragic: the Garnering" references aren't likely to completely screw over someone's attempt to accumulate Legion fame. This is a bug which directly affects a built-in game mechanic. This isn't some random throw-away reference or incidental text glitch. If you do not know about this bug then you will likely fall afoul of it. There's no reason it should not be mentioned on every appropriate wiki page. -- Yukichigai (talk) 07:03, March 13, 2013 (UTC)

If a positive community consensus is reached, the new design will become functional here and the community can decide from there whether the final design is appropriate or not on Nukapedia.
  • JunkRadio - I would like to share a quote from the JunkRadio designer himself: I was thinking of adding it to the top left or bottom left corner of the wiki. I can give it absolute positioning, which means that it will display on the top left, regardless of screen resolutions. If necessary, I can make it scroll down with the page as well, although this might distract users from reading the actual pages. - Mark van Alphen
    • Thank you for reading, and I'll be looking forward to gathering everyone's final opinion over these new changes. Due to the overwhelming support so far for all three changes, only needing minor points to update them for clarity, the vote will continue as normal, and will end on the 23rd as scheduled. Formspring conversions

OK. Here's what needs to be done with those Formspring links:

  • For all links linking to a post of Josh's BEFORE 9February2013 you need to add the wayback link before the Formspring link in the url.
  • EXAMPLE: You add web.archive.org/web/20130209011941/ to <ref>[http://formspring.me/JESawyer/q/xxxxxxxxxx]</ref> right after the [http:// but before the formspring.me.
  • Final url should look like: [http://web.archive.org/web/20130209011941/formspring.me/JESawyer/q/xxxxxxxxxx], where xxxxxxxxx is the question id number in the link.
  • For any links that link to one of Josh's posts AFTER 9February2013, we'll have to see if wayback does another archive. If not, we'll have to come up with something else. You may want to make note of those posts for later reference. I'm hoping any bad links will show up as red on the edit preview so we don't have to check every damn one.

I'll get all the blog and user talk pages. Here is everything linking to Formspring, 325 links in all. Good hunting. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 00:55, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Richie. We'll just have to deal with the bad links when the site goes down and figure out what to do then all that red starts showing up. Ha, you, a vandal? Pls. ;) --Skire (talk) 21:18, March 21, 2013 (UTC)
BTW, protecting those pages is actually not that short-sighted. It's more like the exact opposite. Wagnike's edits and my subsequent discussion with Chad only reminded me that they needed to be protected, as they are the original source. If there are link updates or other things like that needed, then one may contact a user with sysop rights to edit it, or may request a temporary unlock so they themselves can work on it. --Skire (talk) 22:59, March 21, 2013 (UTC)
Of course, and I understand your position perfectly. Just as the FO Bibles are protected, these must be too. I wouldn't necessarily agree on your statement that they are rarely edited. I have seen several reversions of changes made since some editors do not realise that they are to be kept as they are regardless of errors. Furthermore, protecting them (as is the practice to do so) will reduce the chance of users editing in good faith only to be reverted, and as such will reduce the very need to revert it. Wagnike is an exception as he is using AutoWikiBrowser to hunt down spelling errors etc. and fixing them. If there is another change made to a design doc, please let me or someone else with sysop rights know so we can revert it. All this is not about opinion or whether I feel it's necessary. I've discussed it with Chad and it is common practice, and beneficial, to lock original publications. It is not bureaucracy but a safeguard. --Skire (talk) 23:37, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

Hey Richie. Here's the way I see this one. He's been hired by NCR 'interests', but there is nothing to confirm that the 'interests' have any formal connection to the NCR itself. Rangers

Well they are on the frontlines after all. But my point is that the policing function is still very much there, when needed. There's plenty of evidence out there that indicates that maintaining law and order is part of their job, and why should that be excluded just because it is not as readily apparent in-game to you, as the player? It's not like there's much more evidence of them being "special forces", either.

Besides, given the theme of the game, the whole sic-a-bunch-of-Rangers-on-ye feels more like a posse kind of thing, especially since it usually takes place in area that is under the nominal control of the NCR. Whereas when Caesar does it, it usually takes place in what is considered enemy territory to the Legion. And the whole "keeping an eye on the enemy" thing doesn't make sense if they position a lot of Rangers in the rear, away from the frontlines.

Also, the text of the article itself says that they're performing "a police-like role".

216.58.107.222 00:36, April 18, 2013 (UTC)

No, it is not. And if they are keeping an eye on those potential threats rather than engaging in actual military operations with an enemy that the NCR has effectively declared war on, then they are actually performing the typical roles of a frontier police, or gendarmerie. Frontier police, gendarmerie, border guard. All of those fall under the definition of a paramilitary organization, due to the fact that their roles are not exclusively military in nature. That being said, I will be posting a summary of all my counter points thus far on the talk page. And I want you folks to actually disprove the argument that they are not in any way something of a frontier police, rather than attempt to emphasize how much of a military force they are. In times of war, a frontier police can effectively be a military in of itself. Again, read up on the Texas Rangers. 216.58.107.222 00:59, April 18, 2013 (UTC)
Now you're just losing track of the argument... Check the talk page. You're thinking of them too much in terms of being just police, rather than having both jobs on their roster. Incidentally, have you ever heard a military special forces having a riot control division assigned under their command?

Game References

When it comes to references taken straight from the guide, they may indeed be edited to improve readability and canon status. This is for three reason:

  • We don't need to be copying information over word by word. That's a great way to lose our unique nature.
  • The game guides were not created by Bethesda/Obsidian/Zenimax. A second party was contracted to write the guides during the development of their respective games. Because of this, they were finished before the games were made, and were released at the same time together. What this means is that a lot of information in the guide is false compared to in-game content that was changed before being released. A perfect example is with the unique hunting shotgun - in the guide, it says it can be found at the Nuclear Test Site. In-game, it is a quest-reward from Red Lucy. Because of this, it is proper at times to re-write game-guide references to comply with true information.
  • A lot of content found in the guides aren't exactly... professional. In these cases, it is okay to re-write them a bit, as long as the original information is kept intact. We still keep the ref tags even after making changes, because a lot of information in the guides aren't even found in-game; being cut content or just a bit of developer lore that was passed on to the guide creators. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 06:15, April 30, 2013 (UTC)

Weird. Consider this my judgment, then. If you have an actual problem aside from going off of a previous consensus, make sure to let me know. If anyone else has a problem, make sure they're sent my way. But 'totally' is not exactly what I would call proper to use on a wiki. Call my nit-picky, I guess. Infobox and expression errors

Think something went wrong with Wikia's update today. Wouldn't worry about it too much. They're working hard to fix it I'm sure. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 16:29, May 15, 2013 (UTC)

Graphics issue

Do you know anything about this error message

Expression error: Unexpected < operator.

It appears in bold red letters and what ever it is seems to make some images appear to large for the page.

If you have any ideas, please advise. Thanks.

Grenade rifle

Hey Richie. Could you see this post I sent to Garoux and let me know of your thoughts? --Skire (talk) 02:57, May 18, 2013 (UTC)

I see where you're coming from and that's all very sound logic but my concern is that it is only most relevant to the vanilla grenade rifle page. The Red Victory, Great Bear grenade rifle etc. are based off the vanilla grenade rifle (which is based off the M79). So we can't really say that those unique variants themselves have been based on the M79 since it is really their non-unique variant (which came first) that was truly based off it. Anyway, after hearing what you have to say I am fine with it staying as there are indeed other cases to refer to. Since they haven't been removed I'm going to invoke stare decisis. --Skire (talk) 03:12, May 18, 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I had to strike out one of your votes. The lore page, as discussed on the forums, is not about humans, but the lore behind where both sets of terminology came from, and their meaning. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 14:55, May 20, 2013 (UTC)

Just a friendly tip

Hey Richie! If linking to other Wikia projects, you can use a shortcut by following the format shown in this edit. It makes things a little easier and it's pretty cool, right? Just a tip. (I only learnt this myself a few weeks ago.) --Skire (talk) 02:20, May 31, 2013 (UTC)

Re: Dean Domino

I just made some edits on the page. The note was weird, so I changed his stats to include level 50. (His max level is set to"50".) But, I noted that he will only reach that level if the player has all the DLCs. 69.125.134.190 20:34, June 1, 2013 (UTC)

Chat ban

Well, I made an effort to censor it because I knew it was against the rules, but that's like me blindfolding someone and killing their mother, so I should be banned. I don't have a place on here anymore. When I came in to chat the other day, I wasn't allowed to know what happened with Mel. I really don't have a place in the chat function and likely this wiki. --TwoBearsHigh-Fiving Intercom01 03:00, June 6, 2013 (UTC)

It wasn't so much not knowing what it was about as opposed to, "I thought I was a trusted user, do they not trust me." You want to know what bothered me? I chastised someone for linking a video that said the N word over and over and over again. But then I censor the F word and I get more flak for that? --TwoBearsHigh-Fiving Intercom01 03:07, June 6, 2013 (UTC)

Chat/Rule 4

I cant get directly involved due to a conflict of interest, as much as I would like to "Change hats" on this sort of issue, if I act it becomes more about the person who acted, and the person who is wronged, rather than the actual wrong act and the person who did it. I've said openly I wont get directly involved, and I have to keep that, no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is.

In general however, I offer this advice for dealing with situations where Rule 4 is at play.

My view is that Rule 4 is enforceable in PM as it is in main chat. The problem comes in proving it.... going to need screencaps or a confession.

I dont recall rule 4 ever being used in a ban, so this is pretty uncharted territory. As a CM, you can Chatban of course if you think the case is proven and warrants it. There is of course the standard tarriff of ban lengths, but as a CM any ban period is at your discretion - you can ignore that if you feel it is appropriate.

If you think a chatban isn't enough, you can bounce it to an admin or Bureaucrat to see if they feel further action is appropriate. If you can't decide on a length, I'd advise banning for a period to be decided, and then seeking the advice of other CMs/admins as to the length, as long as you decide within a reasonable period (say 24hrs).

Flak and Shrapnel?

I'd like to discuss the reason you reverted my edits about Flak and Shrapnel being lovers. There is an extensive discussion about it on both of their talk pages already, and my reason for including it in the article is for consistency. As I said, Carol and Anthony Ling's articles both mention their sexual orientation. This is inconsistent. Either add it to Flak and Shrapnel's pages in the notes section, or delete the sexual orientation references from the other NPC's pages.

I saw that you claimed it is "speculation, it could just be one heck of a bromance", but this is extremely unlikely, as discussed in the talk pages. There's a lot more evidence for their relationship than for Carol and Greta's, or for Anthony Ling's sexual orientation, yet it's mentioned in their articles. Again, for consistency, shouldn't it be added to Flak and Shrapnel's notes or something, or removed from all of the articles? Darkness Squall (talk) 00:00, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

Very well, for consistency's sake I will remove the speculation from Carol's page. Darkness Squall (talk) 00:04, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

Just out of curiosity, why are you saying that this is speculation, Richie? Ausir himself confirmed after translating the developer notes from the Polish version of the game that both Flak and Shrapnel are lovers. Not sure if you remember or not, but Ausir does indeed have ties with Bethesda themselves, and would know what he's talking about concerning dev notes. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 00:58, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. A source would be good to have. I'm going to shoot Ausir a message on TV, just in-case he feels inclined to answer. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 02:16, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
