Real-life inspiration

Possible real life inspiration for this weapon? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.128.160.40 (talkcontribs). Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

maybe, the're basiclly the same thing —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.255.87.16 (talkcontribs). Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

A cross between the Davy and the PIAT perhaps. The PIAT is a similar motar style of weapon with a short range. The length and grip arrangement is also very similar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIAT Major T0m 12:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Location

Has anyone ever found this Fatman? I have never seen this dead paladin fellow in the PS3 version of the game. Is the fountain the circle divided into four pieces with the globe on top? It's the only thing that resembles a fountain. cheap357@hotmail.com 01:21, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

He was the one who was bludgeoned when the super mutant behemoth attacked and caused most of the damage. I PERSONNALY found it on accident in the fountain, that is dried up, and nukes are pretty rare.

Name?

This Might be a stupid question but who or what is Fatman?--Deathclaw Killer 23:36, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Fat Man was the codename for the atomic bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki, Japan. Ash Nuke.jpg AshRandom (Talk) 05:06, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

deathclaw killer a fatman is possibly my favorite weapon in the game(Experimental MIRV not a weapon, overkill, nothing in the game needs 8 mini nukes to the face, off topic though)is a weapon that projectiles a mini nuke this might help, Fatman--King of the wastes 23:48, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh, yes, this is. View pictures here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon Fatman = commonly used (ingame and IRL) implosion type assembly.

Overkill

"...as outlined above, there are other means to retain tactical nuclear strike capabilities..." I laughed when I read that. In RTS context it would be OK but in an RPG... I know, this is Fallout, but a portable and reusable tac-nuke is still an overkill.--Amitakartok 00:28, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Go up against a horde of high level muties grouped together and say that. Nuking them with the Fat Man is the only viable option if you don't wanna empty your ammo stores and stimpacks. --MadCat221 01:46, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
I dunno I took on seven, super mutant overlord with nothing but a .32 pistol about 20 or 30 frag grenadess and Protectron's Gaze.Aryeonos 20:22, October 28, 2009 (UTC)

And a mininuke with some psycho could have killed several of them at one time.

Need to take the rarity and value of the mini nukes into consideration too.Ragedaoneanlonely 09:52, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

davy

dude thats cool, but that BOS solider is not reddin but just already dead always positioned on the fountain with the fatman an ammo(so you can kill your first behemoth)--King of the wastes 23:41, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh thank you --Deathclaw Killer 23:44, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

NU UH

I actually talked to Initiate Reddin!!!. If you meet them on outer entrance she is with that Lyons BOS chick!!!!

ya shes deems it necessary to investigate the giant banging on the wall, and that was that initiates downfall.--King of the wastes 23:54, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

If you really want a fatman, theres one at the white house location with about 6 or 7 mini nukes lying around it. theres also one on a dead palidin in front of GNR broadcasting station wich he is also carrying 3 mini nukesNukacolacap 16:21, December 3, 2009 (UTC)nukacolacap

actually, nuka, you have it mixed up. the one at the white house has 3 mininukes nearby and the paladin has 8 exactly. Wrpen99 02:19, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

My bad thanks for the clarefication Wrpen.

Criticals/Sneak Attack Criticals

How exactly do criticals and sneak attack criticals work with this? It says the multiplier is 0x so does that mean it doesn't crit? Sneak attacks do seem to do extra damage as the DAM listed for me is 921 but a sneak attack critical did around 1200 damage.

It also seems that VATS incorrectly calculates the damage from a headshot.

EDIT: It seems that the Fat Man I had in my inventory was bugged. It's damage was listed at 870 but it was doing a little over 1000. I used the additem code to get a new one and it's damage was actually a bit less than what it said, by 40 or so. I also added the part about VATS headshots in a new 'Bugs' section.

BUG? GLITCH? WTF? (Ps3)

I can't use fat man in Point Lookout!! Is that just a bug or you just cannot use it in there?--RadioActiveGhoul 12:37, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

I play on PS3, I'll check that out soon to see if it's a bug for everyone on PS3 or just you. --Chiefsean16 Leave a message if you can be bothered! I don't get much visitors... 00:48, October 10, 2010 (UTC)

Attention Admins!

Perhaps it would be prudent to make an announcement, something to the effect of "Please don't post your bogus game strategy tips on an informative page". Maybe I'm not in a position to complain (I'm just another un-named used without an account) but I believe that the overall quality of the already wonderful Vault Wiki would improve greatly with the removal of game strategy tips from "this editor", "that editor" and "the other editor". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.130.68.120 (talkcontribs). Well, we have rules in place to clarify that this kind of content and writing style should not be used (see VA:C#Content criteria and VA:EDIT#Perspective) but some people not abiding by them is something that unfortunately cannot be avoided. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:50, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

HEADSHOT!

I don't think the Fat Man headshot is bugged. Perhaps, similar to a grenade, the 10 dmg is from the impact of the Mini Nuke and the 1600 dmg is from the resulting explosion. My guess is that a headshot only doubles the 10 dmg from impact and not the 1600 dmg from the explosion 68.192.9.90 13:48, October 25, 2009 (UTC)

Plural?

The article states that the plural of Fat Man is 'Fat Mans'. Now, call me a pedant, but shouldn't it be 'Fat Men'?

Marshmallow2166 17:56, January 14, 2010 (UTC)
Proper nouns don't have to pluralize the same way regular nouns do.--Gothemasticator 20:12, January 14, 2010 (UTC)
Really? Never knew that.-- Marshmallow2166 20:09, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
While Gothemasticator is right in general, the plural of "Fat Man" is indeed "Fat Men" - at least according to the Fallout 3 Official Game Guide. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:15, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
Argh now I'm confused. I suppose the Game Guide is the correct/overall source in situations like this?--Marshmallow2166 20:18, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
Well, the Game Guide isn't exactly right about everything (click the link to see all the mistakes we found in it), but Fat Men sounds better than Fat Mans, so we'll use that. Nitty Tok. 20:19, January 16, 2010 (UTC)
As Nitty said, the guide is not always right - but in absence of other sources for the correct plural of "Fat Man" in Fallout games, we'll use that :) -- Porter21 (talk) 22:39, January 16, 2010 (UTC)
I think I've changed them all. --Marshmallow2166 23:36, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

err...

How can the Lone Wanderer carry such a encumbering weapon? Added to the weight of the Mini Nuke, it dosen't make sense he/she could hold it, not to mention fire it, with the recoil from it, it weighs a lot...AreYouGoingToEatThatNuke? 13:16, January 19, 2010 (UTC)

How does the Lone Wanderer carry a minigun, assault rifle, dozens of grenades and mines, heavy armor, tons of drugs, random junk, not so random junk AND all of the ammo to go along with it, as well? If you couldjust hold one gun at a time the game would suck. think this through please. PwnageASSASSIN 04:46, January 22, 2010 (UTC)

well would you rather hold any amount of weight you want up to a certain point, when you start moving slower? or would you rather hold up to 3 guns (2 with Big Guns), 10 chems, 10 food and water items, and an undetermined amount of junk and ammo depending on strength? when you get really deep into games like this, you tend to not care about realism. play for an hour, and you wont give a crap about things like that. if you make a game almost exactly like real life, then there wouldn't be much room for other important things, like quests, items, the fighting system... and don't even get me started on PC versions. this is the best they could get. just stop complaining, and enjoy the game.

There should be a bit more realism in this sort of stuff. I want to be able to have to run from something as trivial as a Giant Radscorpion. Apparantly, with the Lone Wanderer being able to carry 350 lbs of stuff, that just makes sooo much sense. (just ignore my messed up signature for now) http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/d/da/User-_AreYouGoingToEatThatNuke%3F_Sephiroth_Animated - N͎͈͉̼͇͕̹͜'̨̖̱̯̬̠̌ͮ̓ Blab 02:49, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

I see where you're coming from Nuke, but given the fact that Fallout is an RPG and pretty much BASED on getting new items, that can be very frustrating. Find a new weapon, drop your old one. Rinse and repeat. Also, at high levels, Giant Radscorpions, and worse, Deathclaws, will be pretty much everywhere. Run from one, oops one behind you. That would get very boring and frustrating quick. 50.8.131.242 03:03, November 5, 2010 (UTC)

bugs

Please confirm with multiple editors before a bug is added to the articles, thanks

  • If you try to drop the Fat Man or sell Fat Man then the game will freeze(if it is from the dead Brotherhood soldier at GNR) although it can be put in things like lockers(confirmed on PS3)

--Kingclyde 02:12, January 25, 2010 (UTC)

  • And Confirm the bug for shooting the Fat Man very close quickly (with a lot of health of course) causes it to not need to reload only once.Atomic Sparkz 11:56, June 12, 2010 (UTC)

Did I incorrectly edit?

I removed "The bell that sounds after shooting the Fat Man is the lunchroom bell at the Bethesda offices." Because I thought it happened with all explosive weapons? If not, my mistake I'll go change it back. Haven't used the Fat Man in a while... RepairedSteel 10:32, April 12, 2010 (UTC)

Anyone else suffer from this issue?

When firing directly into a targets body, such as the torso of a behemoth, the nuke will literally BOUNCE off, and change direction in the air. I've had this many times, and the camera continues to follow the mini nuke until it hits the ground and explodes...

Seems to happen regularly with behemoths, and with sentry bots.78.146.129.203 18:50, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Ghouls vs Fat Man

Ghouls are healed by radiation, right? Does that not mean shooting a mini nuke at a Ghoul would strengthen them? At the very least, a Reaver (who can survive a Mini Nuke blast) would surely be healed by the radiation is gave off? Vault-BA 17:32, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

The 1600 points of damage from the concussive force would more than counter any healing from the radiation, provided they even survived the blast. Kris (talk) 18:26, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
While I'm on the subject, I hit a Albino Radscorpion with a mini nuke. It was a beautiful shot, but did it really matter whether I hit it head on? Vault-BA 20:04, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
I could be wrong, but I believe the farther away from the blast your target is, the less damage they take, until they're outside it completely and take no damage. So a direct hit is not required, but for full damage you need to at least place it right between the scorpy's claws, if not a direct hit on the body. For Behemoths, dropping it between their feet is sufficient for full damage, while other SMs you gotta drop it at their feet (but aside from Overlords, they won't survive even half the blast damage). On a side note, I once used the CSA with a missile launcher for a sneak attack critical on a Deathclaw, where I was just outside of the blast radius of a Fat Man. Don't ever do that, use a Fat Man instead, the missile launcher just angers them! Kris (talk) 20:46, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Origin

Was this weapon originally supposed to be crafted on a workbench? It's just its design seems to lend itself to that theory rather than a professionally manafactured weapon, i mean its a nuclear catapult for goodness sake.

No, it's a pre-War man-portable WMD. Nitty Tok. 21:55, October 11, 2010 (UTC)

Fat man in new vegas

Has anyone found a fat man in new Vegas I have found a few mini nukes and the fat man little boy kit but no fat manDeadxinsanity 16:11, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

I've found 3x Fat Man so far, 1 in Nopah Cave on a corpse, and 1 on a dead super mutant near the Cazador Egg Pile (for the Bleed Me Dry quest) in the mountain path west of Red Rock Canyon, but I forgot where I found the other one, I'm sorry. All three were in fairly poor condition, of course. 4RM0 13:19, October 31, 2010 (UTC)
If the Fatman is in New Vegas, why doesn't the page claim so? Someone needs to update this page with the NV information. Wck604 11:52, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

HUGE NV Fat man nerf?

I was jogging along, clutching my All-American, when I saw a few Deathclaws below me. I thought "Hey, why not use my newfound Fat Man?" So I took it out, and shot it at them. No sneak bonus, but I didn't care. "Nothing could survive that!" I thought. When the nuke hit, NOT EVEN A YOUNG DEATHCLAW was killed. I hit them right on. Shocked, I looked at the weapon's DAM on my Pip Boy. 132. DPS, around 30. What a useless, heavy, rare joke weapon. On a side note, my Explosives skill was only around 60, and I need 100 to do the most damage, but still even with 100 exploxives max dam 215 for a tac nuke? Obsidian really drops the ball. 50.8.131.242 02:14, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

I noticed this too my friend, its very sad indeed :/ I focused most of my stats in improving the nukes damage and AoE, and at the end, sure 240-260 doesnt sound great, but in sneak and splash damage on you, nearly everything dies from the blast, though I have to say, the nuke looks significantly bigger with the damn perk, but i think theres a bug in it..idk it could be me XD
